Evidence of Learning #1

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a data and science-based service

organization that applies disease prevention and control, environmental health, health promotion,

and health education. I was using this website to learn more about mental health in children

when I stumbled upon the article “What Is Children’s Mental Health?”. This article discusses

mental health in children, including disorders, treatments, prevention, and research. I aspire to be

a pediatrician in the future, so this article helped me learn a lot about understanding children's

behaviors.

One of the main points stated in this article is that mental health plays an important role

in the development of children. A mentally healthy child has a good quality of life at school, at

home, and in extracurricular events. However, mental disorders severely impact the way a child

learns, plays, and interacts with other children. If symptoms are serious and persistent, how a

child behaves and handles their emotions causes distress and problems throughout the day.

Because of this, it is very important to keep in mind that a child might have a mental disorder

that is causing the way they act. As a result of learning this information, I know to have a broad

mind when it comes to interacting with children. I know that a child might be facing

psychological problems and that it is important not to judge them just based on their actions and

moods.

Also, I learned a lot about different mental disorders and treatments in this article. The

most common types of mental disorders are attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),

anxiety, and behavior disorders. However, more severe mental disorders can be developmental

disabilities, autism, and risk factors. The symptoms of these disorders change over time as a

child grows and can be observed in how a child plays, learns, speaks, and acts. Even though

systems of mental disorders usually start in the early childhood years, they can also develop

during the teenage years. Some mental disorders even go undiagnosed (most commonly

inattentive ADHD).

Overall, this article really helped me realize that it is just as important to understand how

vital mental health is in children as technical skills and medical knowledge. Knowing this

information, I will make sure to keep an eye out for mental problems people around me are

facing and try to help them.
