(To be accomplished by the researcher)
(1) Research Title

Contextualized Literature Instruction for Senior High Students in Teaching Reading & Writing Skills

(2) Proponent (3) Program and Major

CAROLE E. CLAVE Master of Arts in Education - English

(4) Classification

Research: Development:

___ Basic  Pilot Testing

 Applied ___ Tech. Promotion/ Commercialization

(5) Priority Areas/ Classification (Identify the alignment to the program and to the RDC research
agenda.)

Language, Culture, Mathematics, Educational Technology, and Pedagogy

 Development of Innovative Educational Materials

(6) Rationale (State the research problem and significance of the study to the current needs of the
community and the gaps the research intends to fill.)

One of the features of the K to 12 Program is the idea of curriculum contextualization. DepEd
defines it as “the educational process of relating the curriculum to a particular setting, situation or
area of application to make the competencies relevant, meaningful, and useful to all learners” (RA
10533). The degree of contextualization may be described and distinguished as localization or
indigenization. Contextualization is not just a feature of the K to 12 Program but also an essential
part of DepEd’s mandate to be included in the preparation of every lesson. In fact, the DepEd
Order
No. 42, series of 2016 reiterated that “teachers are encouraged to make full use of these
contextualization strategies to make lesson more relevant and meaningful to learners” (DO 42 s.
2016). With contextualization, teachers can present the lesson in a more meaningful and relevant
context based on the learner’s previous experiences and real-life situations. Thus, learners are put
in a natural and actual learning environment letting them to manipulate, relate, and adapt to various
learning opportunities and resources available within the locality or community, profound learning
will be assured and realized (Torres, 2015). This means to say that contextualization benefits both
the teachers and the learners. It can dramatically boost teaching and learning outcomes (Andriotis,
2017). Moreover, contextualizing the curriculum can help the students see how their studies are
relevant to their lives, making them more engaged and motivated to learn. Thus, it is significant to
use contextualized or localized materials especially in teaching literature. However, even in the
implementation of contextualization in teaching, still, many schools in some provinces and

localities, including the Province of Dinagat Islands have no authenticated localized materials.
Hence, the output of this study – Contextualized Literature Instruction is significant in achieving
more relevant learning in teaching Reading and Writing Skills to Senior High School Students.
Moreover, the importance of local folklore and myths could serve as means of understanding and
preserving the local culture of the province.
(7) Objectives/Statement of the problem (Statement of the specific purpose to address the
problem areas of the research).

Primarily, this study aims to achieve more relevant learning in teaching Reading and Writing
Skills to Senior High School Students using an anthology of local folklores and myths as a
Contextualized Literature Instruction. Simultaneously, local culture is recognized, recorded and
collected, thus conserving the local culture of the province.
Specifically, the researcher would conduct the following:
 interview local folks especially the old folks to gather folklores and myths they know, heard,
or personally experienced;
 record the interview or the folk’s story telling as audio record would serve as the
researcher’s guide in writing the folklore and myth;
 translate the audio record of folklores and myths from vernacular to English;
 use the contextualized material in teaching Reading and Writing Skills to SHS students

Further, this study focused on the effectiveness of the Contextualized Literature Instruction to
the Reading and Writing Skills of Senior High School Students in Plaridel National High School.
Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:
1. What is the level of performance of the participants without the contextualized literature
instruction (control group) in terms of:
a. reading comprehension; and
b. writing skills
2. What is the level of performance of the participants with the contextualized literature
instruction (experimental group) in terms of:
a. reading comprehension; and
b. writing skills
3. Is there a significant difference on the level of performance in terms of reading
comprehension and writing skills of the participants with and without the contextualized
literature instruction?

Hypothesis
Ho: There is a significant difference between using the contextualized literature instruction
among the respondents and using none.
(8) Theoretical/Conceptual Framework of the Study (Write foundational review of existing
theories/concepts that serve as roadmap for developing your study).

(9) The Impact of Research (State the bearing of the study to the community. A typical justification
would include a general statement concerning the historical basis for research and
development, utilization of the expected output and the impact the information
generated will have on the target users and the country).

This study targets to aid SHS teachers of Dinagat Islands in teaching Reading and Writing
Skills through the use of a Contextualized Literature Instruction and promoting a lifelong love of
learning while giving a sense of pride in one’s local culture. And this is achievable through the
output of this study which is a collection of the province’s local folklores and myths.
(10) Methodology (Brief description of how the study will be implemented).

(11) Research Environment (Describe the study sites or the setting of the study).

The research environment of this study includes the municipalities in the province of Dinagat
Islands for the collection of local folklores and myths, and Plaridel National High School senior high
students for the testing of the output.

(12) Research Design (Indicate the appropriate research design to be employed in the study).

Since the study aims to achieve more relevant learning in teaching Reading and Writing
Skills to Senior High School Students using an anthology of local folklores and myths from Dinagat
Islands for a Contextualized Literature Instruction, this study would appropriately employ
quantitative – quasi- experimental research design through the use of ADDIE model.

(13) Target Beneficiaries (Who the clienteles are and what are the expected outcomes/effects of
the use of the project outputs).

The expected output of this study is an anthology of different local folklores and myths from
the province of Dinagat Islands for Contextualized Literature Instruction This is very essential to
achieve more relevant learning in teaching Reading and Writing Skills to Senior High School
Students. Hence, the target beneficiaries of this study are the SHS teachers in Dinagat Islands
Division handling Reading and Writing Skills. In addition, the students/learners would also benefit
the output of this study, since they are the recipients of learning.
