INTRODUCTION

This school-based assessment assesses the effects of imported honey on the sale of local honey at
S&S supermarket. With imported honey entering the country at a rapid rate, local honey is being
purchased less. Therefore, this research intended to shine some light on this topic or issue by
interviewing a business to reveal the impact of imported honey on the sale of local honey.

TITLE OF INVESTIGATION
An assessment of the impact of imported honey on the sale of local honey at S&S supermarket.

3
OBJECTIVES:
 To find out why consumers prefer imported honey over local honey.
 To find out the demand for both honey before and after importation.
 To find put the sale revenue of both types of honey.
 To find out the profitability of the business before and after importation of imported
honey over a one-month period.

BACKGROUND
It has been reported that imported honey is entering the country at a rapid rate and is selling very
quickly since their prices are affordable. Consumers are known for taking advantage of the cheap
price and this is increasing competition for local honey.

Honey is as old as written history, dating back to 2100 B.C. where it was mentioned in Sumerian
and Babylonian cuneiform writings, the Hittite code, and the sacred writings of India and Egypt.
Its name comes from the English hunig, and it was the first and most widespread sweetener used
by man. Honey outgrew its origins in the world and become a widely considered popular food
throughout 200 nations including Guyana.

S&s supermarket has been selling local honey for the past 15 years. Recently over a 7-year
period the business has been selling imported honey, an estimate of 6 cases per week, and is
receiving greater attention. The influx of imported honey on the market is creating a glut which
could affect the sale of local honey.

The researchers want to find out which is more profitable to sell, for future knowledge. For
instance, if any family member decided to open a shop selling honey, they can gain information
to help increase the profit margin.

5
METHODOLOGY
The research or investigation was conducted at S&S supermarket located at Helena Mahaica,
east coast demerara.
An interview sheet was one of the methods used for the purpose of gathering data for the
research instrument in the form of a conversation where questions are asked, and answers are
given directly. The interview took 15- 20 min, and 7 questions were asked.
An interview has a few advantages.

 They allow more detailed questions to be asked.

 It gives immediate feedback.
 They usually achieve a high response rate.

To achieve the data an interview sheet was planned out and prepared by the researcher. The sheet
was then taken to S&S supermarket on 2022-12-05. The sheet was use by the researcher as a
guideline to question the supermarket’s owner to obtain information on the main object of the
research.
The other method of gathering necessary data for the research was a questionnaire. A
questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions for the purpose of
gathering information from respondents.
Advantages of questionnaire.

 Easy analysis

 No pressure
 Inexpensive

To obtain data, a list of question was prepared by the researcher. The questionnaire was then
delivered to the owner of S&S supermarket on 22-12-05. The owner was given 2 weeks to
complete the various questions. The researcher waited for the two-week period to finish and
collect the questionnaire sheet on 2022-12-19.
The data collected by both methods were quantitative and qualitative.
Limitations
The effort towards completing this SBA was that the owner of S&S supermarket did not want to
give detailed information in terms of how imported honey affected the profitability of the
business.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

1. According to the owner of S&S supermarket he had approximately 500 customers

demanding 1000 cases of local honey per month before the importation of imported
honey.
This shows that the business had a high demand for local honey before the importation of
imported honey since that was the only alternative available at the time.

2. According to the owner of the business, he had approximately 300 customers demanding
700 cases of local honey per month after the importation of imported honey.
This shows that the demand for local honey decreased or fell because a better alternative
was available for buying.

3. The owner of the business said approximately 600 customers are demanding 1200 cases
of imported honey per month after its importation.
This shows that imported honey is receiving greater attention when compared to local
honey from customers.

of local honey because of the `

The Orange line indicates the demand of imported honey. It clearly shows that 300 persons are
now demanding 600 cases of imported honey. The graph shows that persons are demanding
more imported honey than local.

11
4. The profitability of the business in a one-month period before importation of imported
honey was $45000.
This clearly shows that the business profitability needed to increase.

5. According to the owner of S&S supermarket, the profitability of the business for a one-
month period after the importation of imported honey is now $66000.
This indicates the profitability of the business increased rapidly and it also shows that
imported honey had a great impact on the raising the profitability of the business.

amount of imported is shown to be 1300, which is greater when compared to the purchase of
local honey.

The bar char in figure 6 shows the amount in cases of honey sold after a one-month period for
both imported and local. It can be stated from looking at the chart that more than imported are
sold local honey, since 1100 cases of imported honey are sold while only 690 cases for local
honey. It is also calculating that 200 cases of imported honey are remaining (1300-1100=200) at
the end of the month while 3 cases of local honey are remaining (720-690=30) at the end of the
month.

FINDINGS

The interview with S&S supermarket owner has revealed a few Findings. The questionnaire to
be answered also revealed some information.

These include.

1. It was revealed that the business earns more sales revenue from imported honey
($250000) when compared to local honey ($150000) per month.

2. It was indicated by the business owner, after importation of imported honey the business
profitability went up to $66000 per month.

because the number of customers decreased.

22
CONCLUSION

This SBA started with the assumption of investigating the impact of imported honey on the sale
of local honey. To obtain information necessary for the investigation, an interview was done at
S&S supermarket located at Helena Mahaica, east coast demerara. A questionnaire was also a
method used to collect data. This study was done on the 8th of December 2022.the data collected
by both methods were quantitative and qualitative. The main objectives of this study were to find
out why customers prefer imported honey over local honey, to investigate the demand for both
honey before and after importation, to find out the sales revenue of both type of honey and to
investigate the profitability of the business before and after importation of imported honey after a
one-month period.

After the study was conducted, it was revealed that the business earns more sale revenue from
imported honey ($250000) when compared to local honey ($150000) per month. From the study
it was indicated by the business owner, before importation of imported honey the business
profitability was $45000. Then after the importation of imported honey the business profitability
went up to $66000 per month. It was also revealed that the majority of customers which is 60%
prefer imported honey over local honey because of taste. The investigation revealed that the
demand for local honey fell after the importation of imported honey because the number of
customers decreased. The data shows beyond doubt that there are indeed effects of imported
honey on the sale of local honey.

23
RECOMMENDATION

The researcher would like to recommend that:

1. Government should impose tariff causing the price of imports to be higher, discouraging
the importation of imported honey to remove competition from local honey producers.

2. The government can also put a restriction on the amount of imported honey allowed into
the country to allow the survival of local producers.

3. Local producers should try different ways of persuading customers to buy their honey by
using sales promotion techniques.

4. Local producers should improve the taste of local honey since majority of customers
prefer imported honey over local honey because it has a better flavor and taste.
