Chapter 7
It is a set of values based on the
ideals of discipline and hard work.

Developing a strong work ethics can


train a person to consider hard work
easier and may be completed
spontaneously.

Work Ethics
GOOD WORK ETHICS

It ensures that any work is done with honesty and


integrity. Employees that adhere to policies and rules
while meeting the organizational goals is a good sigh that
everyone has good work ethics.
DEFINITION OF Work is both a personal and
social activity.

mental exertion that is not
undertaken solely for
pleasure and that has
economic and symbolic

WORK
Work is the reasonable use of an individual's mental and
bodily powers for the purpose of monetary gain or profit.

In order to understand more deeply the meaning of work for Filipinos a


survey was made by the Ateneo Center of Organization Research and
Development. The research made use of 1,040 employees from various
companies in the Metro Manila. The result of the survey yield that there are
five ways Filipino workers view their work.
THE 5CS MODEL OF
WORK
Calling
Workers who consider their work as
a calling define their work as
motivating and rewarding and feel
highly energizing and satisfied in
what they do. Calling implies work
is motivated by lofty, nonmaterial
goal.
The 5Cs Model of
Work

Career
Those who consider their work as a career label their work as
stimulating, fun, exciting and inspiring.

Cause
Those who view their work as a cause feel that their work is
an obligation or duty, a heavy burden and not at all times
pleasant or enjoyable.

Chore
Work that one feels forced to do for the lone purpose of
earning a living or in exchange for other tangible outcomes.

Coast
When work is not of main importance to one’s life. It
generates no intense feelings, negative or positive, and may
be experienced as reasonable, sometimes inspiring, other
times dull, sometimes gratifying.
THEOLOGICAL MEANING
OF WORK
The verses in chapter one of the Book of
Genesis revealed that God was the first
to perform work on the earth. Hence,
work as an activity of God is legitimate.

The work of God is by nature good;


therefore work is also essentially good

God inspected and evaluated the quality of His completed work and He became
very glad on the results.
Through Gods example, it is obvious that work ought to be productive.
A job well done must be rewarded with honor and satisfaction.

Glorify simply means “to provide a truthful representation”


Hence, when Christians do their works such must be a truthful representation of
God in terms of righteousness, faithfulness, and excellence.

In Genesis 2:8-15 when God the Garden of Eden, He mandated Adam and Eve to
cultivate and maintain besides were to subdue and rule over the earth.
This command relates to all vocations. During the 15th century Reformation,
leaders considered an occupation as a ministry before God. Therefore, jobs have
to be recognized as a ministries. At the same time workplaces ought to be
considered as mission fields.

It is God who is the Creator of humankind who


started work ethics.

God made humans in His own image and His word


declares these various work ethics of honesty,
integrity, doing job excellently, keeping things above
board, and accountability factors.
CHRISTIAN WORK ETHICS
Two Fundamental Work Ethics

Humility- being humble at all times,


no task is too belittling.
Treatment of others- loving one’s
neighbors and even enemies, the
Golden Rule dictates to treat others
with decency and respect.
CHRISTIAN WORK ETHICS
It is emphasized in Colossians 3:23-25 that a person whether he is slave or free
must work with all his heart, because he is not working for men but for God.
It is expected that doing such the person will obtain an inheritance from the Lord
as reward.

God told the Israelites to also provide to people who had less. Poor people also
should work for themselves.
Proverb 14:23 remind Christians that hard work would result to profit and poverty
to those who dislike working.

For Christians, working hard is essential part of life. A person with good work
ethics always sets as a good example to others.
Workaholism is not tolerated in the Bible. Christians are warned not to work for
the sole purpose of accumulating worldly fortune but to bring glory to God.

Integrity- it is seen as one of the

trust. It also means behaving in
a consistent manner.

The moment a person became part of a company and assigned task and
duties, he has a responsibility that he must accomplish.

Professionalism
It covers almost a lot from appearance to how a person conducts himself in
front of the public.

Emphasis on quality
These people show dedication and commitment to improve the quality of
the company’s overall productivity.

It involves focusing on goal, dedication and determination. It is something
comes from within.

Sense of teamwork
This employee respects their peers and helps making collaboration go
smoother. A cooperative spirit is always part of a strong work ethics.

would not have problems socializing with his co-workers because he is
always on a positive mood.
