Abstract: This report presents the comprehensive design and analysis of a control
mechanism aimed at regulating voltage in a short transmission line. The primary objective of
this project was to ensure the smooth and efficient transmission of power by effectively
managing the voltage levels at the receiving end of the line. The project encompassed several
key steps, including measuring voltage values under different loads, carefully selecting
suitable capacitance through breaker operation, and successfully implementing a robust
control system.

Introduction

Voltage drops occurring in a transmission line as a result of resistance and inductance can
lead to a decrease in voltage at the receiving end, which adversely affects the efficiency of
power transmission. Hence, voltage regulation becomes essential to maintain the desired
voltage levels and ensure optimal performance. Within the scope of this project, we focused
on a short transmission line and developed a meticulously designed control mechanism
specifically aimed at regulating the voltage.

Methodology

The project was divided into several steps:

2.1 Measurement of Receiving End Voltage: The voltage values at the receiving end were
measured for different loads, including resistive, inductive, and RL loads. These
measurements provided the basis for analysing the voltage drop and designing the control
mechanism.

2.2 Design of Control Mechanism: A Simulink model was developed to represent the short
transmission line. The transmission line model consisted of series resistance and inductance,
connected to the load models. A voltage measurement block was placed at the sending and
receiving end to monitor the voltage.

2.3 Breaker Operation and Capacitance Selection: Based on the measured voltage values, an
error signal was generated using MATLAB Function. Although the error function could not
be implemented within the given time frame, the project continued with the remaining
components. Breaker operation was used to select the appropriate capacitance based on the
error signal.
Results and Analysis

The utilization of a Simulink model enabled the simulation of voltage regulation in the short
transmission line. By comparing the voltage measurements at the receiving end with the
desired voltage values, the project provided valuable insights. While the implementation of
an error function was not included, the project effectively showcased the influence of load
fluctuations on the voltage at the receiving end.
Conclusion

In summary, this project has contributed valuable insights into the design and analysis of a
control mechanism for voltage regulation in a short transmission line. Although the
implementation of the error function was limited, significant progress was made in modeling
the transmission line, considering load variations, and understanding breaker operation.

Future endeavors could prioritize the incorporation of the error function to enhance the
control mechanism and achieve more precise voltage regulation. Furthermore, additional
investigations could delve into the influence of factors like power factor variations and
various load types on voltage regulation in short transmission lines. Such endeavors would
further deepen our understanding and pave the way for more efficient and reliable power
transmission systems.
