NATIONAL NEWS
1. Government has launched auction of critical minerals for the first time.
• Objectives-
o To boost the exploration and extraction of critical and strategic minerals
o To secure a critical-mineral supply chain for India's energy transition and net-zero-by-
2070 target.
• More about auction-
o First batch of auctions involves 20 blocks across seven states- Bihar, Gujarat,
Jharkhand, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh and the union territory
of Jammu & Kashmir.
o Bids are invited only in digital format.
• Importance of Critical Minerals:
o Critical minerals are crucial for India's economic development and national security.
o The scarcity of these minerals and their concentration in a few countries pose potential
supply-chain vulnerabilities.
• India's Renewable Energy Goals:
o India aims to achieve 50% of its cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-
fossil sources by 2030.

3. Union Cabinet has approved Rs 1,261 crore scheme to provide drones to 15,000 progressive
women Self Help Groups (SHGs).
• Tenure of scheme-
o The scheme will run for two years beginning 2024-25.
• Subsidy under the scheme-
o Centre will provide 80% of the cost of the drone and accessories/ancillary charges of up
to Rs 8,00,000.
o Total estimated expenditure of an agricultural drone and its accessories is about Rs 10
lakh.
• Remuneration-
o Drone pilot will receive an honorarium of Rs 15,000 and a co-pilot about Rs 10,000.
• Identification of SHG-
o SHGs will be identified from the total 89 lakh SHGs formed under the Deendayal
Antyodaya Yojana.
o Cluster Level Funds of SHGs can raise the balance amount (total cost of procurement
minus subsidy) as a loan under the National Agriculture Infra Financing Facility (AIF).
o An interest subvention of 3% on the AIF loan will be provided.
• Drone Procurement:
o Fertilizer companies will provide around 500 drones.
o The remaining 14,500 drones will be made available through central assistance in the
next two years.
• Drone Usage:
o Clusters of 10-15 villages will be formed for the use of drones.
o Approximately 1,000 hectares of land will be available for drone operation.
o Emphasis will be given to commercial crops.

5. Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has released Dynamic Ground
Water Resource Assessment Report 2023.
• Assessment carried by-
o It is carried jointly by Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and States/UTs, which can
be used for taking suitable interventions by various stake-holders.
• Key observations-
o Analysis indicates improvement in ground water conditions in 226 assessment units in
the country compared with 2022 assessment data.
o Total annual ground water recharge for entire country is 449.08 billion cubic meters
(BCM), while extraction is 241.34 BCM.
o Stage of ground water extraction stands at 59.23%.
o Out of total 6553 assessment units, 4793 units categorized as ‘Safe’.

Homestays Competition 2024.

8. World's first indigenously designed portable hospital 'Aarogya Maitri Aid Cube' has been
unveiled in Gurugram, Haryana.
• Key features-
o It can be set up within one hour of arriving at the emergency site to treat the injured.
o It can be used in any emergency area or disaster such as earthquake, flood, forest-fire
or even a war.
o It is made up of 72 detachable mini- cubes, each being a specialised station for
emergency response and humanitarian efforts.
o It is designed indigenously under Project BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog
Hita and Maitri).

9. India has reduced its emission intensity as per a government report titled 'The Third
National Communication to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate
Change'.
• Key observations-
o India has achieved a significant reduction of 33% in emission intensity of its gross
domestic product (GDP) between 2005 and 2019.
o India is among the first 26 developing countries to submit communications based on the
GHG inventory of 2019 or later.
• Revision of NDC Targets-
o India had initially set a goal of a 33% reduction in the emission intensity of GDP by 2030
in its original submission of NDCs.
o However, this target was revised upward to 45% in the updated NDCs submitted under
the Paris Agreement in 2022.
• Non-fossil Fuel-Based Power Capacity-
o India has exceeded its original NDC target of 40% for non-fossil fuel-based power
capacity in 2030 by achieving a 41% share.

o The target has been further revised to a more ambitious 50% as of 2022.
• Power Generation Sources-
o In 2022-23, India generated 73% of its power from coal and 12% from 'new renewables'
(excluding hydropower).
o The Central Electricity Agency has projected a decrease in the share of coal to 55% and
an increase in new renewables to 31% by 2030.

10. Indian researcher Dr Akshata Krishnamurthy has become the first Indian woman to
operate the Mars rover Perseverance and collect samples from Mars to bring back to
Earth.

o She is Principal Investigator and Mission Science Phase Lead at NASA after completing
her Ph.D. in Space Systems Engineering at MIT, USA.
o She works as a Systems Engineer and Scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Executive Committee of Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) during its 46th meeting
held at Food and Agriculture Organization headquarters at Rome.

energy integration.

o BESS are devices that store energy from renewables sources like solar and wind and
then release it when the power is needed most.
o India is part of BESS and committed to secure 5 GW of BESS commitments by the end
of 2024.

o It is an initiative led by The Global Leadership Council (GLC) of the Global Energy

Wood Certification Scheme (IFWCS).

o It offers voluntary third-party certification designed to promote sustainable forest
management and agroforestry in the country.

o It provides market incentives to various entities that adhere to responsible forest

expedition to the Arctic from New Delhi.

o Researchers will study climate change, space weather, sea-ice and ocean circulation

o First batch of the maiden Arctic winter expedition includes researchers from NCPOR, IIT
Mandi, IITM Pune, and Raman Research Institute.
o Priority research areas for the Arctic expeditions include atmospheric, biological, marine,
and space sciences, environmental chemistry, cryosphere studies, terrestrial
ecosystems, and astrophysics.
