TOPIC: ANALYSIS OF PLANNED TOWNS WORLDWIDE
Objectives:
To expose students to various examples of planned towns around the world, allowing them
to analyze the principles and outcomes of urban planning in different contexts.
Relevance to Real Life (Practical Applications):
This problem-based learning (PBL) activity empowers to understand and analyze the
design of planned towns worldwide. On successful completion of this activity, you will be
able to understand clearly the design brief evolution from clients brief, concepts of town
plan, effect of various factors on town planning and how the existing towns impact the
planning and design of new towns/cities worldwide.
Assigned Planned Towns: Students are distributed in groups and each group is assigned
a specific city for study as stated below:

c. Stevenage, England 11-15
d. Islamabad, Pakistan 16-20
e. Brasilia, Brazil 21-25
f. Shenzhen, China 26-30
g. Putrajaya, Malaysia 31-35
h. Amsterdam, Netherlands 36-40
i. Chandigarh, India 41-45
Criteria/Instructions:

a. Background Research:
1) Conduct thorough background research on each planned town.
2) Gather information on the historical context, planning principles,
architects/planners involved, and the intended goals of each town.
b. Urban Design and Layout:
1) Analyze the urban design and layout of each town.
2) Compare and contrast the spatial organization, infrastructure, and distribution of
residential, commercial, and recreational areas.
c. Social and Cultural Aspects:
1) Investigate the social and cultural aspects of the planned towns.
2) Examine how the design and planning decisions have influenced the sense of
community, cultural identity, and social interactions.
d. Economic Considerations:
1) Explore the economic aspects of each planned town.
2) Consider the impact of planning decisions on economic activities, employment,
and overall economic sustainability.
e. Sustainability and Environmental Planning:
1) Assess the sustainability features and environmental planning strategies
implemented in each town.
2) Consider the factors such as green spaces, energy efficiency, and waste
management.
f. Successes and Challenges:
3) Identify the successes and positive outcomes of the planning decisions in each
town.
4) Analyze the challenges faced and any unintended consequences.

First Response Required


 Prepare a visually engaging presentation summarizing key findings.
 Include visual aids such as maps, diagrams, and images to support the analysis.

Due on Monday 20 December 2023

We will have max 15 minutes for each presentation, each member of the group shall
present their part.

NOTE: Reflect on the implications of the study for the field of urban and regional
planning.
