the year of assessment

This Practical Assessment Task is the only official practical examination for Grade 12
Tourism learners in 2023. Under no circumstances may it be substituted by an
alternative practical examination task.
It is the responsibility of the facilitator to ensure that all learners complete both phases
of the PAT. The PAT must be kept in a separate file – not with the SBA portfolio.
Each learner must have a PAT file.
• The PAT must be assessed and checked, and its authenticity must be
declared by the teacher before being submitted as the learner's proof of
performance.
• The facilitator must provide the Declaration of Authenticity form (TOUR02) to
learners prior to the final submission of the PAT.
• No half-marks (½) are allowed. Marks must be awarded for a FULL
description/understanding should the mark allocation be one (1) or two (2)
marks. For full marks, the response must be well-substantiated, and the
candidate’s interpretation must be grounded on facts.
• Prior knowledge of Grade 10 and 11 subject content will be required.
TOURISM
INSTRUCTIONS TO LEARNERS
GUIDELINES TO LEARNERS
1.2 Timeframe
To complete all administrative processes in time for the results, learners must adhere
strictly to the timeframes as determined by the facilitator/SACAI.
The table below indicates the timeframe for the submission of the 2022 TOURISM
PAT.
SECTION OF THE PAT Completion
PHASE 1 Last week in July 2023
PHASE 2 First week in September 2023
Both learners and parents must take note that the Tourism PAT is an essential part
of the subject. If the PAT is not completed for Grade 12, a valid written reason must
be handed, otherwise the learner's final results will be incomplete. The learner will
therefore not be resulted.
Therefore, it is extremely IMPORTANT that the PAT task is completed and submitted
on the due dates as determined by the Facilitator/SACAI.
Learners must complete and sign a Declaration of Authenticity form (TOUR02) during
final completion of the PAT. In this statement the learner confirms that the PAT
submitted for assessment is the learner's own work. The statement also confirms that
no plagiarism was committed.
NAMAQUA CAMINO
Namaqualand is an arid region in the north-western part of South Africa. It covers over 1,000
kilometres (600 mi). The Namaqua Camino 10-day route meanders through the interior and
along the coast; west of the N7 national road. The Namaqua Camino’s Camini takes you via
an inland route to the coast.
The 10 day - 260km Namaqua Camino is a challenging walk that will test your endurance at
times - please prepare thoroughly and well in advance for this walk. The terrain differs from
day-to-day. The long daily distances, hard gravel roads, deep sandy tracks and steep uphill
stages during days two and three are difficult.
The Namaqua Camino’s 7 Day Camini is a more leisurely walk but you still need to prepare
beforehand in order to be walking fit.
The Wild West Coast 100 is a 5-day and approximately 100-kilometre slack-pack route that
traverse along an almost pristine and unspoiled coastline that very few hikers have had the
privilege to experience before now. The Wild West Coast 100 is a linear route from Kleinzee
to Hondeklipbaai. You need to prepare well in advance and strive to be 100% walking fit, as
this route will test your endurance at times.
The dates for all the walks have been selected specifically during a time of the year when
the weather is supposed to be temperate but as we all know, Mother Nature is fickle and
extreme weather (very hot, cold or rainy) might be experienced during this time. Facilities in
the overnight camps are basic but we do supply hot showers with rationed water. Bucket
toilets are available at the overnight camps and along the route. Water is rationed to 5 litres
per person per day for personal use. Drinking water, however, is always available in the
camp and along the daily stages.

We recommend that you arrange to stay over on the last night as well. The last day’s stage is about 21 km.
We reckon that a fit teenager of 12 years will be able to do the 7-day route. The oldest hiker on one of our
10-day routes was a fit 77-year-old lady. We don't have a specific old-fashioned policy, but emphasise the
fact that you need to be as step-fit as possible especially for the 10-day walk.
The Namaqua Camino is a 10-day walk through the distinctive and diverse Namaqualand countryside. It is
a slackpack walk where you bring your own camping gear but it is transported to each overnight camp. The
Namaqua Camino is a circular walk departing from the quaint seaside village of Hondeklip Bay. The
spectacular 260 km route will take you over arid plains, through a unique succulent biome, and along the
unspoiled Atlantic coast of the Namaqua National Park. We look forward to introducing you
to Namaqualand and its unique beauty and diversity.

Slappacking
Slackpacking is a new way of hiking the wonderful terrains of the world! In simpler terms,
Slack-Packing is an assisted way of hiking where you have a host who carries the burden of
your equipment, takes care of your possessions and set up your overnight camps for
you. This is an amazing new way to travel, which allows you to focus on your hike and travel
at a faster pace if needed.
1. Your Host
You need a person who will be your host (carrier). Be sure that this person is of a reputable
source. There are sometimes hiker and AWOL approved lists available if you want to seek out
a slack-pack host. But there is a chance that a very nice person who is trail-savvy will offer to
slack you. Naturally, you will want to say yes. But remember, when you hand over your pack,
you are handing over your entire life. Not to mention that your gear is worth a pretty penny.
Think of your host as your house sitter they will be taking care of your possession and your
life.
Once you have the right host it is important to set a plan in place for your hike. Make sure you
have their phone number and vice-versa. Know your host’s name, and make sure they know
yours. Will you be calling them when you’re done with your hike, or will they be dropping off
your things at a set location? Remember you won’t be together all day as you will be hiking
and they will be setting you up at the campsite.
Don’t Take Advantage of your Host they are doing you a favor so be respectful and they will in
turn respect you and your property.
Thank your Host you are paying them but be course and kind and tip your host to show your
appreciation and thankfulness!
2. Your Preparation Details
So now that you have a host you need to plan and prepare for your hike. First, you need to
know what you are taking along.
Know how you will pack your equipment some slack-pack hosts are kind enough to provide
you with a day bag or smaller backpack for your hike. If they don’t, you’re going to have to
decide how you’ll be carrying your lighter weight and how your host will be caring for you
heavier weight, remember to be kind and do not over pack! And this brings us to the next
point.
Know what your packing and what you need and what you don’t! Gear is obvious and the
essential clothing and medical kits, and things you will need at the end of a long day of
hiking. If you need a water filtration system, hiking poles, all these things should be noted
when planning your slacking experience.
Your hiking trail make sure you plan this together with a tour guide operator or hiking
association, your host will also be able to help you with these details. But a tour guide
operator will direct you to the perfect spot and the rules & guidelines will be easy.
You will be walking around feeling wonderful. You will have barely any weight, and you will
feel phenomenal. But please, don’t go around bragging about how wonderful you feel right
next to someone who is clearly in pain and tired.
Just because you don’t have a full-pack doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t continue to practice
basic trail safety. Be safe, stick to the rules and be sure to check in with your host constantly
Slacking is wonderful and can be a great experience but take note of the details, prepare &
make sure you have a plan and a great host.
Enjoy slacking!!
