Fairy tale is included in narrative text. Narrative is a text focusing specific participants. Its social
function is to tell stories or past events and entertain the readers.
1. Generic Structure of Narrative
A narrative text consists of the following structure.
a. Orientation
This part is the introduction part of a narrative text. This part introduces the participants and
informs the time and the place where and when the story takes place.
b. Complication
This part describes the conflict among the characters or the problem should be overcome by
the main character.
c. Resolution
This part shows the way of character to solve the crises, better or worse.
2. Language Features of Narrative
Narrative text has several features which distinguish the genre from other text type. Here are
the language features:
a. using processes verbs,
b. using temporal conjunction, and
c. using Simple Past Tense.
Task 1
Listen to the following text twice and fill in the blanks space with the correct answer!
Aladdin and the Magic Lamp
Once upon a time, there lived a handsome boy in Baghdad. The name was Aladdin. He was a
clever boy, but he did not like to work.
One day Aladdin’s mother sent him to (1) ... place to look for a job. In the market he met a magician.
The magician asked him to work together with him. If Aladdin could do, he would get (2) ... and jewellery.
The magician asked Aladdin to go inside (3) ... and find a magical lamp there. He also gave a ring and
said, “If you are in any trouble, rub this ring and a genie will come to your rescue!”
Aladdin went into the cave. Inside the cave, Aladdin was surprised by what he saw. Every corner
was full of gold and treasures. A few minutes later, he found the lamp and quickly returned to (4) ... of

Aladdin called out, “Magician, I have found the lamp.” “Excellent,” answered (5) .... “Quick, pass it
to me!” Aladdin did not trust the magician so he said, “Not so fast Magician. You must help me out of
this cave first.”
The magician became very angry. When Aladdin was walking to the entrance, the magician
pushed (6) ... over the entrance of the cave and left Aladdin and the lamp behind. Aladdin tried to
move the rock all by himself, but it was too big and heavy, “Oh no! I am trapped in the cave!” he cried.
Suddenly, he remembered the magic ring. He rubbed it with the palm of his hand. To his surprise,
a genie appeared before him and in (7) ... said, “Master, I am the Genie of the ring. How can I help
you?”
Aladdin was frightened, but he soon found the courage to ask, “Could you please send me back
to my house?” In no time at all Aladdin was back home.
Aladdin (8) ... the lamp. He wondered what would happen if he rubbed it. As Aladdin was rubbing
it, all of a sudden another enormous genie stood before him. The genie of the lamp said, “Master, your
wish is my command.” Aladdin was very excited and wished for (9) ... and bags full of gold.

The Lazybones
Once upon a time, lived a very lazy boy, his name was Tom. He was very lazy, so that people
called him, “the lazybones”. All the things he did were only laze around. He never helped his parents
who had a bakery, whereas, his parents worked very hard in the bakery. They were helped by Bob,
an employee. One day, Mr. Jones, Tom’s father was sick. His illness made him had to stay on the bed
all day. He was very worried about his bakery. He was also worried that all the customers would be
disappointed because they couldn’t enjoy the bread as usual. But his wife, Mrs. Jones, Tom’s mother,
calmed him, and said that his son would help her and Bob in the bakery. Mr. Jones didn’t believe that,
neither did Tom.
Tom was assigned to deliver the breads to the customers in the town. Since then, Tom had to
wake up very early in the morning and delivered the breads. In the beginning, it was very hard work
to do for Tom. The customers were also surprised because their breads were delivered by Tom, but
then they understood after Tom explained to them. Tom got compliments from the customers for the
first time. As day passed, more customers praised him. Tom then became proud of himself too. Since
then, he thought that working wasn’t bad after all. In fact he was quite happy could help his parents
and got compliments from the customers. From that day on, Tom no longer became a lazybones.

The Fortune Teller
In the great city of Taipei, there lived a man and his wife. They had no children. Because of this, they
were very unhappy. One day, they found a baby boy outside their door. He was wrapped in a blanket and
crying. They took the baby into their house and called him Sau Ling. They loved him very much.
When Sau Ling was a young man, a fortune teller came to the house. “You must send your son
away,” he said. “One day he will become a thief and cause you a lot of trouble.”
Mr and Mrs Lin were very sad to hear this. They believed what the fortune-teller said. They gave
Sau Ling some clothes and money and sent him away.
Several years later, Sau Ling was having a meal in an inn several miles from Taipei. He put his bag
on the floor near his table. After finishing his meal, he picked up his bag. “That’s strange!” he thought,
“It feels so heavy.” He looked inside. It was full of small gold bars. Then he realised that someone had
taken his bag by mistake and left another bag, in its place.
That evening, a young man came to the inn, “Has anyone seen my bag?” he asked. Sau Ling was
very honest. He returned the bag to him. The young man thanked him. “You are really very honest,” he
said, “I shall ask my father to give you a job.” The young man’s father was a rich merchant. He gave
Sau Ling a good job. “But go home first,” he said, “and take a holiday.” Sau Ling returned to Taipei. Mr
and Mrs Lin were delighted to see him again. The fortune teller was also present. Sau Ling told them
what had happened. The fortune teller did not know what to say. He left the house without saying a
word. Mr and Mrs Lin never believed in a fortune teller after that. Sau Ling took them to live with him
and they were very happy and contented until the end of their lives.

even more. He loved the vegetables in Mr. Farmer’s garden.

The White Butterfly
An old man named Takahama lived in a little house behind the cemetery of the temple of Sozanji.
He was extremely friendly and generally liked by his neighbours, though most of them considered him a
