Modeling
There are many types of narrative; they can be imaginary, of Text
factual, or a combination of both. They may include fairy tales,
mysteries, science fiction, romance, horror stories, fables, adventure,
myths, and legends, historical narratives, ballads, ‘slice of life’, and
personal experience.
1. Purpose:
Is used to entertain, that is to gain and hold the reader’s interest
in a story
Or to teach and inform writer’s reflections on experience
Can be imaginary or factual (fairy tales, mysteries, fables,
romance and adventures stories, myths and legends)

Orientation : sets the scene (when & where) and introduces

PRACTICE 1
A Public-Spirited Old Man
In a quite town in California, there lived an old man
who liked the sidewalk near his house to be clean and tidy.
Although the streets were regularly cleaned by a street Joint Construction
sweeper, the result did not meet his satisfaction. of Text
Consequently, every morning the old man carried a big
broom and started to re-sweep the sidewalk until it was
incredibly clean. He had been doing this for the past five
years.
Unfortunately, one day a new policewoman was on duty. She saw
him dangerously standing on the road while sweeping the leaves into the
scupper drain. She immediately serve him a notice for jaywalking, a
punishable offence in the United States of America. As a consequence, the
seventy-year old man landed himself in court.
When the judge heard the complete story from the old man, she was
touched by the old man’s public spirit. The judge said to himself: “Public-
spirited men are getting fewer and fewer, and I don’t want to see another
one disappear tomorrow morning.” Finally, the judge directed the jury to
acquit the old man of the offence.

Why Do Hawks Hunt Chicks?

Once upon a time, a hawk fell in love with a hen. The hawk flew
down from the sky and asked the hen, “Will you marry me?”

The hen loved the brave, strong hawk and wished to marry him. But of Text
she said, “I cannot fly as high as you can. If you give me a time, I may
learn to fly as high as you. Then we can fly together.”
The hawk agreed. Before he went away, he gave the hen a ring.
“This is to show that you have promised to marry me,” said the hawk.
It so happened that the hen had already promised to marry a rooster.
So, when the rooster saw the ring, he became very angry. “Throw that ring
away at once!” shouted the rooster. The he was so frightened at the
rooster’s anger that she threw away the ring immediately.
When the hawk came a few months
later, the hen told him the truth. The hawk was
so furious that he cursed the hen, “Why didn’t
you tell me earlier? Now, you’ll always be
scratching the earth, and I’ll always be flying
above to catch your children,” said the hawk.
