A The number indicating the diameter of the coupling unit shall follow the letter C in the case of a
coupling intended for isolators of the cylinder-head type or the letter L in the case of a coupling intended for
rod-type insulators.

5 COUPLING SYSTEMS

There are two coupling systems:

Coupling with limited rotation

Coupling with unlimited rotation

5.1 Coupling with limited rotation

Couplings that allow a limited rotation of the tongue relative to the fork (see figure 1).

This type of coupling is used for the cap and stem insulators, in which the aim is to avoid contact between the
insulating parts of two consecutive insulators. It is recommended for rectangular-shaped lettering.

These couplings are designated by the diameter expressed in millimetres of the coupling bolt followed by
the letter C.

5.2 Coupling with unlimited rotation

They are the couplings for which the rotation of the tongue with respect to the fork is not halved.

This type of coupling is used for pole type insulators.

These couplings shall be designated by the diameter, expressed in millimetres, of the coupling buoy
followed by the letter L.

6 DIMENSIONS

All dimensions given in Tables I and IIare expressed in millimetres and refer to finished products after the last
surface treatment (e.g., galvanized) (see Figures 1
y2).

Usually the tongue is steel andthe fork of malleable cast iron or steel. However, other materials complying
with the mechanical characteristics specified in UNE 21 12421 125 may be used for pole and pole type insulators,
respectively.
Note: The external dimensions of the fork are not fixed because they depend on the mechanical characteristics of the material used. For
the same reason, the length of the coupling bolt which, unless otherwise specified, must be supplied with the fork is not fixed.
The bolt must be secured in position.
In general, cap and shank insulators shall not present difficulties in the positioning of the coupling bolt, given the values of the
steps provided for in UNE 21 124. However, for certain types of insulator having, at the bottom of the insulating element, very
pronounced fins within a short distance of the tongue, difficulties in positioning the coupling bolt may arise. In this case it will
be necessary to verify that the coupling buoy can be positioned.
