Types of Flow in Conduits
Q is also called as the volume flow rate.
Other Flow Rates:
Mass flow rate, M = rQ
Weight flow rate, W = γQ
Problem
a. Find the volume flow rate of water flowing
with a velocity of 2.5m/sec if the size is 75mm.
Express your answer in L/sec.
b. If the density of water is 1000 kg/m3, find the
mass flow rate.
c. If the unit weight of water is 9.81 kN/m3, find
the weight flow rate.
Problem
a. The mass flow rate of water passing through a
100mm pipe is 16.8 kg/s. Find the average
velocity.
b. What will be the diameter of a pipe if the
weight flow rate of water is 95 N/s and the
velocity is 2.6 m/s?
Problem
Water is flowing in a 100-mm diameter pipe at an
average velocity of 2 m/s. If the diameter of a new
pipe is increased to 150 mm, what is the new
velocity in the pipe?
What are the volumetric and mass flow rates in
the pipe?
Problem
The designed water distribution pipeline for
Manito, Albay is composed of successive lengths
of 380-mm, 300-mm, and 250-mm pipe. Water
flows continuously through this line with 250
Lit/sec of water. Find the mean velocity for each
size of the pipe.
Group work
The shape of a 6-m length pipe decreases
uniformly from 450 mm to 150 mm. Compute the
mean velocity of water flowing through it on the
following areas:
a. 2 m from the larger opening
b. 5 m from the larger opening
Note: Q=0.15m3/s
