Assignment No. 2

Instruction: Solve the following problems. Write your solution on a clean short bond paper.
Make sure to box all your final answer for each item. Strictly no erasures allowed.

1. A fluid moves in a steady flow manner between two sections in a flow line. At
section 1: A1 =10 ft2, v1 = 100 fpm, ν1 = 4 ft3/lb. At section 2: A2 = 2ft2, w2 = 0.20
lb/ft3. Calculate (a) the mass flow rate in lb/hr and (b) the speed at section 2.

2. If the water that exits a pipe fills a pool that is 3 meters deep, 20 meters long, and 5
meters wide in 3 days, what is the flow rate?

3. The volume flow rate through pipe 1 is 2.5 times that of pipe 2. If the cross-sectional
area of pipe 1 is one-half that of pipe 2, what is the ratio of the flow speed in pipe 1
to that in pipe 2?

4. Water travels through a hose at 0.8 meters per second. If the cross-sectional area of
the exit nozzle is one-fifth that of the hose, at what speed does water exit the hose?

5. How many cubic meters of blood does the heart pump in a 75-year lifetime,
assuming the average flow rate is 5.00 L/min?

6. A nozzle with a radius of 0.250 cm is attached to a garden hose with a radius of

0.900 cm. The flow rate through hose and nozzle is 0.500 L/s. Calculate the speed of
the water (a) in the hose and (b) in the nozzle.

7. Determine the mass flow rate of a given fluid whose density is 800 kg/m3, velocity,
and area of cross-section is 30 m/s and 20 cm2 respectively.

8. A fluid is moving through a tube at a speed of 20 meters per second. The tube has a
transverse area of 0.3 square meters. The density of the fluid is given as w = 1.5
grams per cubic meter. Determine the amount of mass flowing through the tube.

9. What is the KE of a 2.25 lb body traveling at 30 ft/s?
