Hydraulics – Assignment on ch.3. Kinematics

1. Given the Eulerian velocity vector field V  3ti  xzj  ty 2 k . Find the acceleration of a particle.
2. A tapered nozzle is so shaped that the velocity of flow along its axis changes from 1.5m/s to 15m/s
in a length of 1.35m. Determine the magnitude of convective acceleration at the beginning and end
of this length.
3. What is a continuity equation? Derive the three dimensional expression for continuity flow for
steady incompressible fluid.
4. Three Kilonewtons of water per second flow through a pipeline reducer shown in fig. 3-1.
Calculate the flow rate in cubic meters per second and the mean velocities in the 300 mm and 200
mm pipes.

5. A rectangular channel which is shown in figure 3-2 gradually contracts in width from 3m to 2m
while its bottom is raised by 0.3m. At a discharge of 3.25m3/s, the water depth in the upstream
channel is 1.8m. What is the velocity at the water passes section 1? What is the water depth at the
end of the contraction if the velocity is found to be 1.0m/s?

6. A steady incompressible velocity field is given by:

u  a x2  y2  v unknown and w=b
Where, a and b are constants. What must be the form of the velocity component v be?
7.  
Check whether a stream function exists for a fluid flow if u  a x 2  y 2 ; v  2axy and w  0 .
If it exists, find its expression.
