EXERCISE -3
Situation 1 - Water flows through a 3 cm diameter hose at 0.65 m/s.
the diameter of the nozzle is 0.3 cm.
1. At what speed does the water pass through the nozzle?
2. If the pump at one end and the nozzle at the other end are at the
same height and the pressure at the nozzle is atmospheric, what
is the pressure at the pump?
Situation 2 - A large tank of water is tapped a distance h below the
water surface by a small pipe, as shown in the figure.
3. Why is the pressure the same at points a and b?
4. Show the speed of the water emerging at point b
Situation 3 – Water is flowing at 3 m/s in a horizontal pipe under a
pressure of 200 kPa. The pipe narrows to half its original diameter.
5. What is the speed of the flow in the narrow section?
6. What is the pressure in the narrower section?

7. The pressure in a section of 2 cm diameter horizontal pipe is 142

kPa. Water flows through a pipe at 2.8 L/s. What should the
diameter of a constricted section of the pipe be for the pressure
to be atmospheric pressure?

8. A pipe whose inside diameter is 30 mm is connected to three

smaller pipes whose inside diameter are 15 mm each. If the
liquid speed in the larger pipe is 1.0 m/s, what is its speed in
the smaller pipes?

9. Water flows at a speed of 10 m/s through a hose whose internal

diameter is 10 mm. what should be the diameter of the nozzle if
the water to emerge is at 5 m/s?

10. A water tank has a hole 3 cm^2 in area located 2 m below

the water surface. How many kilograms of water emerge from the
hole per second?
