CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

A Multi-Purpose Charcoal Cooker is an interesting device; it can be used for Cooking,

Smoking, Grilling, Frying, and Baking. It is a common tool for grilling chicken, pork, burgers,

vegetables, and seafood. Additionally, it is an eco-friendly alternative to gas stoves and electric

cookers since its heat source is charcoal or fuel made of charcoal. Our device consumes about

1kg of charcoal, lasting approximately 2-3 hours. For many nature enthusiasts, the ability to cook

various types of food on grilling surfaces while enjoying the outdoors or indoors is a cherished

experience. The grilled flavor of meats and vegetables is well-known for its delicious taste,

making grilling an attractive option. However, the grilling devices currently available on the

market often present challenges. Most are either bulky or have many moving parts, making them

difficult to set up quickly and travel with ease. Due to their complex assembly, these devices are

thick and heavy, inconvenient to store, and challenging to carry. This research aims to address

these issues by providing a Multi-Purpose Charcoal Cooker that is both practical and convenient.

Our goal is to overcome these defects by designing a grill that is easy to fold and assemble. The

Multi-Purpose Charcoal Cooker will help prevent injuries associated with moving traditional

grill devices and significantly reduce the time required for setup. It features a grill, oven, griddle

pan, and thermostat, making it versatile and suitable for various cooking needs, particularly for

campers and transport. Grilling is a widely favored culinary technique, particularly for outdoor

gatherings and barbecues, and the enhanced portability of our Multi-Purpose Charcoal Cooker

makes it an ideal choice for those who enjoy outdoor cooking. This cooker allows individuals to

take their cooking skills to different locations, share the experience with friends, and enjoy

palatable food in the great outdoors.

Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to design a Multi -Purpose Charcoal Cooker.
Specifically, this study aimed to:

1. Design and fabricate a Multi-Purpose Charcoal Cooker with the following features;

a) Grill

b) Oven

c) Griddle pan

d) Thermostat

2. Test the functionality of the Multi- Purpose Charcoal Cooker in terms of its features;

3. Evaluate the acceptability of the device in terms of its design and efficiency; and

4. Formulate a user’s manual.

3

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on designing, fabricating, evaluating, and testing the functionality of

the Multi-Purpose Charcoal Cooker, emphasizing design and efficiency. The device is manually

operated and crafted from essential materials, including 304 Food Grade Stainless Steel plain

sheets, angle bars, flat bars, round bars, thermostat, and glass for the oven. The grilling capacity

is 1 kilogram of pork and chicken, suitable for meat, seafood, and vegetables like eggplant and

other veggies. For frying, it accommodates patties or other quick-cooking foods like ham. The

oven is versatile, allowing the baking of banana muffins, pizza, and cookies. The overall

dimensions are as follows: 0.508 x 0.33 x 0.381m. Folding stands with a height of 0.0762 meters

are utilized in the upper and lower parts to facilitate the placement of the Multi-Purpose

Charcoal Cooker.

Significance of the study

This study will be beneficial to the following:

Campers. It is helpful to those campers who like to grill, bake, and fry their food, and it

is easy to carry and take everywhere.

Chefs. This study can diversify their menus by adding charcoal-grilled or smoked items,

appealing to a broader range of tastes and preferences.
