The Legend of Lake Toba

Once upon a times, there was a young man by the name of Toba. He is an orphan. To meet
his daily needs, Toba works in the fields. Sometimes he looks for fish in the river which is
located not far from his hut.
One day, he was fishing in a river not far from his hut. He really hopes to get a big fish that
he can immediately cook to serve as a side dish. How happy Toba was when he pulled his
fishing line and saw a large fish caught in the hook. For a moment, Toba watched the big fish
he had caught.
"Strange fish." he muttered. When Toba released the hook from the mouth of the fish he had
caught, suddenly a miracle occurred that he had never expected. This strange fish with golden
yellow scales turned into a woman who was sweet and beautiful in appearance. Toba was
amazed when he saw the miracle that took place before his eyes.
Toba then thought of something and explained his thoughts to this woman. His thought was
to marry this woman because Toba was very fascinated by the beauty of the woman who had
incarnated as a fish.
"Will you marry me?" asked Toba after talking for a while.
"Okay, I'm ready, sir. As long as you are also willing to fulfill one condition that I will
submit.” Answer the woman
"What conditions do you want? Mention it, I will definitely fulfill it.”
"My only request, make sure that you can close my secret meetings. Don't ever mention that
I'm a fish."
"Okay, I promise to close with your secret meeting. This secret will be known only to the two
of us.” Toba said.
Toba and The Woman finally got married. The couple lived in harmony and happiness even
in simplicity. Their happiness seemed to be more complete with the presence of their baby. A
boy named Samosir.
Samosir's daily life is just sleeping. It was as if he didn't care and didn't want to help at all
with the hassles of his father who was busy working in the fields. In fact, even to just deliver
food and drinks for his father, Samosir often refused when asked. If he wanted, Samosir
would do it with a lazy and grumpy face.
Day by day, Samosir's behavior became more and more lazy. Whatever is requested by
Samosir, his mother will always try to fulfill it. Samosir has a very strong appetite. Toba felt
he had to work even harder so he could fulfill his son's wishes.
One day, Samosir was asked by his mother to deliver food and drink to his father who was
working in the fields. Samosir, who was lazy at first, was reluctant to carry out his mother's
orders. After his mother insisted, finally Samosir was willing to deliver the food and drink
even though he was lazy. Samosir took the food and drink to the fields.
In the middle of the trip, Samosir suddenly felt hungry. Samosir then ate the food that should
have been given to his father. With the little food and drink left, Samosir then continued his
journey to the fields. When he arrived at the fields, Samosir gave his father what little food
and drink he had left.
Toba, who was already very hungry because he worked hard since morning, immediately
opened his lunch and really wanted to eat it. Toba was surprised when he saw that he had
only a little lunch left.
"Why are my food and drink rations low?" Toba asked with an angry face.
With an innocent face as if he had done nothing wrong, Samosir answered.
"Earlier on the way I suddenly felt very hungry, Father. Therefore, I have eaten some of my
father's food and drink rations. However, I didn't spend all of it, did I? There is still some
food and drink for father's lunch."
Toba's anger suddenly increased. It felt as if he could no longer be patient and hold it in,
Toba's curses were immediately launched. You bastard, son of a fish!”
When he got home and met his mother, Samosir immediately told all the insults from his
father who said that he was descended from a fish. Hearing the complaint from her son,
Samosir's mother became very sad. Unexpectedly, her husband, whom she loved very much,
had broken her oath not to mention that woman was a creature that came from fish.
Not long after, Samosir and his mother were holding hands. In an instant, a miracle
happened. At the place where Samosir and his mother used to stand, suddenly a very heavy
gush of water gushed out. From the ground, the water that was sprayed out seemed to be
endless. In a short time, the ground surface in that area was inundated. The water level was
rising and soon the valley that Toba used as a place to live was full of standing water.
Until in the end, a very wide lake was formed in that place. The small island located in the
middle of Lake Toba is called Samosir Island as a sign that it is the place where Samosir and
his mother stepped foot for the last time.
