ABSTRACT

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide visual map-based analysis and

reporting information implemented in map layers. Geographic information systems
evolve by incorporating new and enhanced means of analysing and presenting
location-based information. In this report, we will study about the History and
Evolution of Geographic Information Systems and its applications in social media.

This report delves into the profound contributions of GIS in decoding spatial
configurations and perceptions within the dynamic landscape of social media.
Evolving from its foundational goals of acquiring geographic information, studying
geo-objects and their relationships, and exploring advanced geographic rules, GIS
emerges as a dynamic force, revealing insights into the interplay between spatial data
and online social interactions.

Reassessing the core functions of GIS—data creation, data management, and data
analysis and visualization—in the context of social media, this report highlights GIS
as a computer-based system adept at displaying, processing, and storing spatial data
within the intricate web of online social networks. GIS transforms from a tool for
understanding physical landscapes to a key instrument for unravelling the virtual
landscapes of interconnected digital communities.

This seminar report explores the ethical considerations in utilizing geospatial

information within the intersection of GIS and social media. Privacy, data security,
and ethical dimensions of spatial data use online are critically analysed, offering a
holistic view of challenges and opportunities.

In conclusion, the report serves as a comprehensive guide to GIS applications in social

media, showcasing its versatility from understanding user behaviour to crisis
management. GIS emerges as an indispensable tool, shaping our perception and
engagement with the spatial dimensions of our interconnected digital world.
