ABSTRACT
This report delves into the profound contributions of GIS in decoding spatial
configurations and perceptions within the dynamic landscape of social media.
Evolving from its foundational goals of acquiring geographic information, studying
geo-objects and their relationships, and exploring advanced geographic rules, GIS
emerges as a dynamic force, revealing insights into the interplay between spatial data
and online social interactions.
Reassessing the core functions of GIS—data creation, data management, and data
analysis and visualization—in the context of social media, this report highlights GIS
as a computer-based system adept at displaying, processing, and storing spatial data
within the intricate web of online social networks. GIS transforms from a tool for
understanding physical landscapes to a key instrument for unravelling the virtual
landscapes of interconnected digital communities.
