Factors affecting mental health

Self-esteem
This is the value we place on ourselves, our positive self-image and sense
of self-worth. People with high self-esteem generally have a positive
outlook and are satisfied with themselves most of the time. When there is
lack of self-esteem it may lead to mental illness

Confidence
Youth should be encouraged to discover their own unique qualities and
have the confidence to face challenges and take risks. Young people who
are brought up to have confidence in themselves are more likely to have a
positive attitude, and to lead happy and productive lives. Many people are
not confident and don’t speak out when they are on stage or talking to
someone.

Family breakup or loss

Separation or divorce or the loss of a parent or sibling is extremely
painful. Finding ways to cope and adjust to the changes wrought by these
events is critical for everyone, but particularly for youth. This grief can
affect young people negatively for years to come.

Physical ill health

Diseases, injuries and other physical problems often contribute to poor
mental health and sometimes mental illness. Some physical causes such as
birth trauma, brain injury or drug abuse can directly contribute to
mental illness. More commonly, poor physical health can affect self-
esteem and people’s ability to meet their goals, which leads to
unhappiness or even depression.
Different types of mental disorders

Anxiety Disorders
 In 2019, 301 million people, including 58 million children and
adolescents, suffered from an anxiety illness.
 Excessive fear, worry, and behavioural abnormalities are hallmarks
of anxiety disorders.
 Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety
disorder, separation anxiety disorder, and other types of anxiety
disorders are among the many different types of anxiety disorders.

Depression
 In 2019, 280 million individuals, including 23 million children and
teenagers, suffered from depression.
 Depression is distinct from common mood swings and fleeting
emotional reactions to problems in daily life.
 It is characterised by a depressed mood (sad, irritated, or empty
feelings) or a loss of enjoyment or interest in activities for the
majority of each day. Other signs may include difficulty
concentrating, a lack of hope for the future, death thoughts,
disturbed sleep, changes in food, and feeling particularly exhausted.

Bipolar Disorder
 40 million people in the world had bipolar disorder in 2019.
 The person has a depressed mood and loses interest in activities for
the majority of the day.
 Anger, increased energy, and other symptoms including increased
talkativeness, racing thoughts, higher self-esteem, decreased need
for sleep, and impulsive hazardous behaviour are all possible signs
of manic illness.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

 PTSD may develop following exposure to an extremely threatening
or horrific event or series of events.
 It is characterised by the following: re-experiencing the traumatic
event flashbacks, or nightmares; avoidance of thoughts and
memories of the event, or avoidance of activities, situations and
persistent perceptions of heightened current threat.

Schizophrenia
 One in 300 persons or 24 million people globally suffer from
schizophrenia.
 The life expectancy of those who have schizophrenia is 10–20 years
lower than that of the general population.
 Schizophrenia is characterised by severe perceptual problems and
behavioural disturbances. Symptoms can include excessive
agitation, persistent delusions, hallucinations, disordered thinking,
and disorderly behaviour.

Disruptive behaviour and dissocial

disorders
 In 2019, 40 million people including kids and teenagers were
affected by conduct-dissociative disorder.
 One of two conditions that cause disruptive behaviour and
dissociative interactions, often known as conduct disorder.
 Persistent behavioural issues, disobedience to actions that
repeatedly violate others fundamental rights or laws are
characteristics of disruptive behaviour and dissocial disorders.
Cure of common mental disorders
Anxiety Disorders- There are efficient psychological
treatments available, and depending on the severity and age, medicines
may also be taken into consideration.

Disruptive behaviour and dissocial

disorders- There are effective psychological therapies available,
frequently involving parents, caregivers, and educators, as well as
cognitive problem-solving or social skills instruction.

Schizophrenia- The good news is that there are a variety of

efficient treatment alternatives, including as medication,
psychoeducation, family interventions, and psychosocial rehabilitation.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder- Doctors use

certain antidepressant medications to treat PTSD including
citalopram ,fluvoxamine, fluoxetine ,paroxetine , and sertraline .

Depression- However, there is effective psychological therapy

available, and depending on the age and severity, medication may also be
considered.

Bipolar disorder- Nevertheless, there are effective therapeutic

methods available, such as psychoeducation, stress reduction and social
functioning enhancement, and medication.
Mental health disorders may go
undiagnosed
Mental health disorders can make it difficult to maintain relationships, do
a job, or perform well in school or at work.
Mental health disorders are often undiagnosed because the symptoms can
be hidden. For example, someone who is struggling with depression may
not express their feelings of sadness or despair. Instead, they may seem
withdrawn or disinterested in activities they once enjoyed. Similarly,
someone with an anxiety disorder may not show signs of distress but
instead may avoid situations that trigger their anxiety. As a result, mental
health disorders can go unnoticed for months or even years.
