A Report: The Effect of Social Media on Young People

Living in the 21st century enables everyone to leave a digital footprint, which
usually serves as a major indicator of one`s preferences, skills, and beliefs. Social
media has already transformed into an internet bubble where those who are willing can
effortlessly express themselves with the help of posts, comments, and diverse forums.
According to the report by Common Sense Media, about half of the 1.500 young
people surveyed declared social media to be a paramount fount of seeking support and
pertinent advice. Furthermore, the same study has showcased that 52% conceive social
media (mainly Instagram and Facebook) as a powerful tool for coping with setbacks.
However, another side of the coin compels not to rely on social media as a way of
healing and gaining encouragement that much. For instance, the research conducted in
2018 declared that 14-to-17-year-olds who used media for more than 5 hours a day
encountered a disheartening and deleterious feeling of depression. This is often due to
exposure to cyberbullying (being humiliated and insulted through social media content,
especially on Instagram) and the lack of physical activity. Additionally, the survey
published in the journal Lancet threatens about undergoing psychological stress which
27% of the teens have been objected to. As it has been stated by Common Sense
Media, 27% of young people have a strong feeling of dissatisfaction with their bodies,
and 22% feel their confidence plummeting when no one comments on their publications.
In light of the above, social media is regarded as a source of communication
having both beneficial and destructive influence on the young generation. Statistics
clearly demonstrate that negative effects prevail over positive ones, which nudges
young people to be more realistic regarding media space.
