OVERVIEW

According to a report of United nations, the world urban population is expected to become 6.3 billion in 2050.

The scale and pace of Urbanization is relatively high. By 2030, the impact of urbanization will be felt in all

spheres of human life including a complex set of environmental, economic, and social challenges. However,

there is a unique opportunity to build more sustainable, vibrant, innovative, and equitable communities.

Finding solutions for a better urban future involves developing new forms of collaboration and partnerships.

Inspired by the possibilities of this new possible urban era, and driven by a belief in innovation through

collaboration across traditional divides, the urban unit seeks to improve the way people live, work, and play

in the future cities of Pakistan and elsewhere.

WHAT DO WE DO

The mandate of The Urban Unit is to give policy advice and services to public and private sector organization

in the areas that include inter alia Housing and Urban Planning, Spatial Planning, Urban Transport, Solid

Waste Management, Water & Sanitation, Urban Economic & Municipal Finance, Institutional Development,

Capacity Building and Service Delivery Improvement using its highly reliable GIS based analytics. Besides

all technical areas, we lend considerable consultation and support in communication, branding, marketing and

stakeholder engagement where and when required.

To become gold source of DATA for Pakistan, assisting the government in policy formulation and strategy

execution.

FOUNDING YEAR

The Urban Unit was established in 2005 as a Project Management Unit (PMU) of the Planning and

Development Department under the Government of the Punjab.

In 2012, the PMU was transformed into an independent private sector company, registered with the Securities

and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), and is fully owned by the Government of Punjab.

CODE OF CONDUCT

The Code sets the standard for how to work together to develop and deliver services, how to protect the value

of the Urban Unit, and how to work with clients, customers, suppliers, and others.

COMPLIANCE OF THE CODE

The Human Capital Department will act as Compliance Office for the code and will ensure the compliance

of this code. The compliance office shall ensure that there are no breaches of the code and code is being duly

followed by all the employees.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM ARTICLES

Plant designed to recycle waste in Sahiwal

The Urban Unit has designed a waste management plant in Sahiwal that segregates the waste and turns kitchen

waste into fertilizer. Briefing media on Sahiwal Waste Management Plan, Asif Iqbal, General Manager Solid

Waste Management, a PhD scholar, and an expert in the field, overseeing this project said, “At present the

plant is recycling 36 tons of waste in a day, in one shift. Going at this rate, Urban Unit has estimated the

revenue from sale of recyclables and compost over three months to be over Rs5.76 million which will be over

Rs8.2 million when the plant will process 50 t/d (ton per day) as targeted.

Urban Unit, BoR launch Revenue Boundaries Dashboard

The Urban Unit and Punjab Board of Revenue (BoR) launched Revenue Boundaries Dashboard under the

project ‘Space Technology Applications in Socio Economic Development Progress’.

The Urban Unit team, under the mentorship of the CEO Omar Masud and the supervision of Dr Urooj Saeed

and Dr Basit Ahmed, has developed an innovative and dynamic platform that aims to secure the decades-old

information of map and relevant data. The aim is to introduce a digital system from which information

regarding mauza boundaries or digital maps can be visualized and details about areas and other attributes can

be retrieved.

The Urban Unit Board of Directors looks internally for accountability and externally for strategy. The Board

supports in establishing vision, mission and setting the company strategic values, laying out strategy and

structure, and exercising accountability by being responsible to the relevant stakeholders.
