A simple method for ships to self-correct standard compass

discrepancies

The ship's standard compass is affected by factors such as the

geomagnetic field, the hull structure, and the cargo carried

(including ferromagnetic substances). The compass deviation often

changes. For this reason, a compass technician should generally be

arranged to go on board every year to correct the magnetic compass

deviation. , and make a magnetic compass residual self-difference

curve table. However, it is difficult to truly adjust the remaining self-

difference of the compass to the minimum and make the self-

difference curve consistent with the actual situation by just relying

on the simple correction of the compass during the berthing period.

It is even more impossible for the compass master to sail to the

compass calibration area with the ship to calibrate the compass self-

difference at sea. This article introduces to you a simple magnetic

compass self-difference correction method. Our crew controls the

ship to correct the compass self-difference.

1. Choose a wide area of water where the magnetic variation of the

geomagnetic field changes relatively little, and conduct it when the

weather and sea conditions are good.

2. Understand the structure of the ship's magnetic compass in

advance, and distinguish the control knobs corresponding to the

longitudinal magnetic rod and the transverse magnetic rod (the pull-

in type can be seen intuitively, just remove the fixed plate and move

the magnetic rod directly).

3. Before maneuvering the ship for adjustment, remove the cover

plate of the magnetic rod box under the compass and remove the

fixing plate by plugging it in.

4. Calculate the gyro compass heading that the ship should sail when

the magnetic heading is 000 degrees, 180 degrees, 090 degrees, and

270 degrees based on the local magnetic variation (the gyro compass

error is considered zero. If there is no gyro compass, it can be passed

while maintaining the heading. GPS obtains a more correct heading).

5. Manipulate the gyro compass heading when the ship's magnetic

heading is 000 degrees or 180 degrees. After the heading is stable,

adjust the east-west (i.e. transverse) magnetic rod control knob (or

pull out a transverse magnetic rod and insert it into other empty

jacks above and below, and more Try inserting or adjusting multiple

magnetic rods each time to make the compass difference zero.

6. Maneuver the ship to travel in the opposite direction, and drive the

gyro compass heading when the magnetic heading is 180 degrees or

000 degrees. After the heading is stable, confirm the current

compass difference, adjust the east-west (i.e. transverse) magnetic

rod control knob (or pull out a transverse magnetic rod) Rod, insert it

into other empty jacks on the upper and lower sides. You can try

inserting it multiple times or adjusting multiple magnetic rods) to

adjust the compass difference to half.

7. Manipulate the gyro compass heading when the ship is sailing on

a magnetic heading of 090 degrees or 270 degrees. After the heading

is stable, adjust the east-west (i.e. longitudinal) magnetic rod control

knob (or pull out a longitudinal magnetic rod and insert it into other

empty jacks above and below, and more Trial insertion) to make the

compass difference zero.

8. Maneuver the ship to travel in the opposite direction, and drive the

gyrocompass heading when the magnetic heading is 270 degrees or

090 degrees. After the heading is stable, confirm the current

compass difference, adjust the east-west (i.e. longitudinal) magnetic

rod control knob (or pull out a longitudinal magnetic rod Rod, insert

it into other empty jacks on the upper and lower sides (you can try

inserting it multiple times) to adjust the compass difference to half.

9. By adjusting the horizontal and vertical magnetic rods when

driving in the above four directions, the residual self-difference of

the magnetic compass can basically reach a smaller range. Note: The

adjustment is always for the east-west magnetic rod, that is, the
magnetic rod that intersects the magnetic field lines of the earth's

magnetic field at right angles. Do not make any adjustments to soft

iron balls and Freund's iron.

The method of correcting the self-difference of the magnetic

compass introduced above is simple and easy to operate. You may

wish to try it according to this method. If you are not sure, you can

record or mark the original position of each control knob or

magnetic rod before adjustment. to restore
