UNDERSTANDING

THE SELF
The Self from the
Psychological
Perspective-II

2
HUMANISM Humanism is a philosophy that stresses the importance of human factors rather
than looking at religious, divine, or spiritual matters. Humanism is rooted in the
idea that people have an ethical responsibility to lead lives that are personally
fulfilling while at the same time contributing to the greater good for all people.

Humanism stresses the importance of human values and dignity. It proposes

that people can resolve problems through the use of science and reason. Rather
than looking to religious traditions, humanism instead focuses on helping people
live well, achieve personal growth, and make the world a better place.

mabuting tao.

HUMANISTIC PSYCHOLOGY

Humanistic psychology is a perspective that emphasizes looking at the whole person, and the
uniqueness of each individual. Humanistic psychology begins with the existential assumptions
that people have free will and are motivated to achieve their potential and self-actualize.

kanyang potensyal bilang isang tao.

CARL ROGERS:
REAL AND IDEAL SELF

5
Carl Rogers' views on ideal self vs real self

Rogers defines the self as flexible and is the center of experiences shaped by its
interactions with others and awareness of one’s own characteristics. He believed that
we are always be striving for self-fulfillment and self actualization. He divided the self
into two categories; ideal and real self. The ideal self is the person you would like to be
and the real self is what you really are.

Incongruence is the difference between the ideal self and actual experiences.
Congruence is when our thoughts about our real self and ideal self are very similar; i.e.
our self-concept is very strong and accurate. High congruence leads to a greater
sense of self-worth and a healthy, productive life.
