Introduction
The School of Mathematics, University of the Witwatersrand is hosting
its 6th Wits Mathematics Competition (WMC). The competition is open
to:
• Middle Primary (Grades 4 and 5)
• Upper Primary (Grades 6 and 7)
• Junior Secondary (Grades 8 and 9)
• Senior Secondary (Grades 10, 11 and 12)
• Undergraduate (First 3 years of post-secondary study)

Format
The Wits Mathematics Competition (WMC) comprises of two rounds:
• The Qualifying Round will take place between 15 May and 21 May 2023, which will
consist of 20 multiple choice questions to be completed in 75 minutes.
• The Final Round for top performers, will take place on 13 September 2023 where the
top 100 learners will compete in each category. The final round will consist of a 90
minute test consisting of 10 short questions and 2 proofs.

Registration
Registration* is now open at https://wmc.ms.wits.ac.za/ . The teacher portal will open by the 23
March 2023 to allow for the registering of students and getting prepared for the big day.
*Please note that registration should ideally be done by a teacher or principal of a school. Signing up a school
means you're running the event for the entire school.
