GASESTROPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE (GERD)

A. BACKGROUND
GASESTROPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE (GERD) is a common disease that
increases every year, making it a problem for the health care system. GERD generally
occurs in healthy people, this disease occurs when stomach contents cause excessive
complaints or complications.
B. MEANING
GERD is a condition where stomach acid rises into the esophagus. If this condition
continues to occurs, it will cause pain in the pit of the stomach, as well as various other
symptoms such as pain in the chest area and lower abdomen.
C. CAUSE OR FACTOR
GERD is caused by weakning of the valve located in the lower esophagus. Apart
from that, GERD can also be caused by in creased intra-abdominal preassure that occurs
during excessive tension, spasms and coughing.
D. SIGN AND SYMPTOMS
Symptoms that usually occurs are sour or bitter in the mouth or a stinging or
burning sensation in the chest and solar plexsus. Other symptoms that can occurs
include :
1. Nausea and vomiting
2. Tooth decay
3. Difficulty swallowing
4. Sore throat
5. Respiratory problems
E. TREATMENT
Treatment for GERD patients can be done in various ways, including :
1. Non – pharmacology treatment
a) Change eating patterns
• Avoid foods that irritate the stomach, for example : coffiee, orange juice, and
avoid eating 3 hours before bed
b) Quit smoking
c) Do not drink alcoholic beverages
d) Drink as much water as possible when taking medication
e) Reduce body weight in obese patiens because GERD symptoms are 2,8 times
higher in obese patiens
2. Pharmacologycal therapy
In this secton, treatment is diviuded into 3 phases.
a) Phase 1
Taking antacids and H2 receptor antagonists namely:
• Cimetidine
• Famotidine
• Niatidine
• Ranitidine
(If there is no improvement, proceed to phase 2)
b) Phase 2
Using a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) For 4 - 8 weeks, namely :
• Lansoprazole
• Omeprazole
• Pantoprazole
• Esomeprazole
(If there is no improvement, proceed to phase 3)
c) Phase 3
Surgery or antireflux
3. Natural Medicine.
a) Tumeric
b) Ginger
c) Papermint
d) Liquorice
e) Aloevera
F. CONCLUSION
GERD is a disease that occurs due to stomach acid rising inro the esophagus.
Treatment can be done in various ways namely : living a healthy lifestyle consuming
certain medicines, if GERD is very severe. You can undergo surgery, GERD can also
be cured by consuming natural ingredients.
