4. Solve the following system

(a)

x + y − 2w + 4z = 5,
2x + 2y − 3w + z = 3,
3x + 3y − 4w − 2z = 1.

(b)

x + 3y − 2w + 5z = 4,
2x + 8y − w + 9z = 9,
3x + 5y − 12w + 17z = 7.

5. Consider the following system,

y + x + az = 1,
x + z + ay = 4,
ax + y + z = b,

(a) find the values of a and b for which the system has a unique solution,
(b) and find points (a, b) such that the system has more than one solution.

6. For what values of k and m does the system

2x − y + 4z = 1,
x + 2y − z = m,
3x − y + kz = −2,

has

(a) a unique solution,


(b) no solution, and

(c) infinitely many solutions?

7. Consider the following system,

2x − y + z = 4,
x + 3y + az = b,
ay + 5z = 10,

(a) find the values of a and b for which the system has a unique solution,
(b) and find points (a, b) such that the system has more than one solution.

8. Consider the following system,

x + 2y + z = 3,
by + 5z = 10,
2x + 7y + bz = c,
