EXERCISE NO. 5: Friction

Directions: Answer the following problems. Show your complete and clear solution.

1. Find the horizontal force required to drag a body of weight 100 N along a horizontal
plane. If the plane, when gradually raised up to 15°, the body will begin to slide.

2. A body of weight 50 N is hauled along a rough horizontal plane by a pull of 18 N acting

at an angle of 14° with the horizontal. Find the coefficient of friction.

3. A 400 lb block is resting on a rough horizontal surface for which the coefficient of friction
is 0.40, Determine the force P required to cause motion to impend if applied to the block
a. Horizontally
b. Downward at 30 degrees with the horizontal.

4. The 500-lb force shown in the figure below is in contact with a 45-degree incline. The
coefficient of static friction is 0.25. Compute the value of the horizontal force P
necessary to
a. Just start the block up the incline.
b. Just prevent motion down the incline
c. If P = 400 lb, what is the amount and direction of
the frictional force?

5. The 200-lb block shown in the figure below has impending motion up the plane caused
by the horizontal force of 400 lb. Determine the coefficient of static friction between the
contact surfaces.

6. A force of 250 N pulls a body of weight 500 N up an inclined plane, the force being
applied parallel to the plane. If the inclination of the plane to the horizontal is 15°, find the
coefficient of friction.

7. A body of weight 500 N is lying on a rough plane inclined at an angle of 25° with the
horizontal. It is supported by an effort (P) parallel to the plane as shown in the figure
below. Determine the minimum and maximum values of P, for which the equilibrium can
exist, if the angle of friction is 15°.
