Implementation of student Induction Programme 2021-2022

Our institution St. Michael College of Engineering & Technology, Kalayarkoil, is like a magnanimous
banyan tree which has a long history of service, achievements, and visionary attainments of both a hallmark for
education and a landmark for the upliftment of underprivileged. We currently offer 2-year full time P.G programs
like MBA, M. Tech- Biotechnology, M.E- Computer Science and Engineering and Communication Systems and
full time Under-graduate courses like B. Tech- Biotechnology & Chemical Engineering, B.E – Computer Science
and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Electronics and
Communication Engineering.

Our department Science & Humanities organized a two week Student Induction Programme from 08th
November 2021 to 20th November 2021 for first year B.E & B. Tech students. It was planned in such a way that
fulfills the certain objectives. The objectives of this programme were to familiarize the students to the new
environment and get them accustomed with the culture of our college. Moreover, the strength of our relationship
with the students is our ability to pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses. This programme has been conducted
at the beginning of the every academic year and it is a comprehensive and meticulous effort on our part to fill-in
the chasm that exists between the shared knowledge of students at the entry-level and the course requirements.

The valedictory function of SMCET and institute level welcome function of first year students of
Engineering and Technology was conducted on Monday, 08.11.2021. Hon. Ms. Iswarya, Project Associate, IIT,
Chennai and recipient of Young Women Scientist Award honoured by Nature Science Foundation, Coimbatore,
was the guest of honour of the function. Hon. Dr. S.Bridget Nirmala Stalin, Chief Executive Officer of St. Michael
Group of Institutions, presided over the function. Hon. Dr.S.Karpagam, Principal of SMCET, has graced the
function with her valuable presence and it was clearly explained by her to the novice to learn about the institutional
policies, processes, practices, culture and values, familiarization to the respective branch/stream etc. Respected.
Dr.K.Mathankumar, Head of the Department of Science & Humanities and respected Dr.A.Arputhapragasam,
Head of the Department of English, felicitated the gathering. Almost all the HoDs, faculties and supporting staff
members were present and welcomed the new students along with their parents in the function.

After the inauguration was the start of the regular phase of induction. In this phase, there were regular
sessions conducted every day. Some of the activities were on a daily basis, while some others were at specified
periods within the induction programme. Induction programme was conducted in four sessions on six days of the
week, two sessions were allotted for pre-lunch session and two sessions were allotted for post-lunch session
every day.

On the first day of induction programme, after inauguration function, the students were presented about
the regulation 2021 and it was clearly explained by the principal and IQAC co-ordinator Mr.Petchiappan. During
the induction programme, admitted students reported branch wise to the class co-ordinators. Students received
a copy of time-table of lectures as well as schedule of induction programme. Class co-ordinators interacted with
students and oriented them to academic practices in the first year Engineering. Students were made aware about
facilities available in the SMCET and how to effectively use them.
The second day was started with simple yoga practices under the guidance of yoga trainer Mr. Suresh.
Also, students were introduced to the sports facilities (indoor and outdoor) available in the SMCET. The students
also had a session to know about the universal human values particularly about pursuit of happiness, self-
exploration, responsible citizen etc. in post lunch session by Dr. A. Arputhapragasam. The session on Human
Values aroused interest among students about different categories of human values. The post lunch session, they
were also presented about the various clubs and its activities by the student co-ordinators. The students were
invited to register in interested clubs.

In the third day, after the yoga practice, the students were informed about need and importance of each
course by the heads of various disciplines of circuit branch and later they visited to the respective departments,
workshops, laboratories etc. In the evening session, presentation by Dr. B.Karpagam and Mr.Rajapugalenthi was
conducted about innovative and project ideas. The next day session was commenced after yoga practice, by Dr.
B. Karpagam with a clear understanding about food habits for healthy living. The students were also made aware
by expert about keeping balance of food, health, and movement of the body. Followed by that, the students
eagerly attended the session about human values. The post lunch session of the day was found very useful about
soft skills done by Dr. Karthik Babu, head of the department of Master of Business Administration.

The day four was started as usual with yoga practice and followed by a motivation speech. The post lunch
session was the talent show and students energetically participated on various events. In the fifth day, the students
went on a local visit to cultural heritage like Pillaiyar patti temple and shri Kuberar temple accompanied by the
faculty members of Science & Humanities and they enjoyed this outreach. In the sixth day, as a part of routine
practice, the students practised yoga and meditation after that they had a session of department introduction done
by all non-circuit branch heads. In the post lunch session, the students were given an opportunity to expose their
talents and different sorts of talents had been witnessed by them.
Seventh day was started with campus visit. Students were taken on institute round by concern class co-
ordinators to visit central facilities like gym, library, workshop, office, class-rooms, laboratory, canteen, etc.
Thereafter, having lunch, students were taken to library to visit and the session was followed by a presentation
by the librarian, Mr.Muniyasamy. He informed the students about different sections and facilities provided by the
library. He told them about effective use of library. On eighth day, it was scheduled a whole day for the students
to participate various sports events such as Volley ball, Basketball, Football, Cricket, Kabadi, Khok-kho etc. which
was monitored by Dr. Senthil & Mr. Karthick.

The day ninth was oriented about the basic mathematics by the faculty members, Dr.Vijayalakshmi &
Dr.Sagaya Arockia Selvi, from the Department of Mathematics in the pre-lunch session. Post-lunch session was
felicitated about the basic English by the faculty members, Ms.Ramalingam Lakshmi & Mr.Samuel, from
Department of English.

On the tenth day, the pre-lunch session was engaged with the visit in Physics and Chemistry lab. Mr.
Rajapugalenthi and Dr.B.Karpagam were there to clearly explain the labs respectively. And then, post- lunch
session was made worthwhile by Mrs.Hema Priyadarsini, Language and soft skill trainer, Carpe diem skills
academy. In the session, the trainer highlighted the significant of life skills and students were involved in some
interesting activities.

An eloquent speech contest was conducted on eleventh day by Dr.Vijayalakshmi and Ms.Ramalingam
Lakshmi. Many a students participated in the contest and presented their speech in both Tamil and English
admirably. Then after lunch, the students were invited to visit computer labs and they were demonstrated all the
practices by Mrs.Devi and Mrs. Jeyasheela. The last day morning session was occupied with multi talent contest
and students were able to expose themselves in various contest and at the end, the winners were awarded with
attractive prizes. The last day post-lunch session was utilized to get feedback from all the students.
