‘-이에요’ and ‘-예요’ structure take the role of ‘It
is’. They are both from a base verb "이다“ which
means "to be“. So you can use it for "be verb" in
English such as "is" "am" "are" and so on.

Do you remember "입니다" ? like "your name"+ "

입니다". That also comes from the base verb "이다
". So "이에요" "예요" and "입니다" are basically
the same, but "입니다" is the most formal
language

You put "-이에요." after a noun ending with a final
consonant "받침“. And you put "-예요" for a noun
ending with a vowel which doesn't end with a final
consonant.

You can also ask "what is it?" by using "뭐" and

since "뭐" doesn't have a final consonant. "예요"
is followed after. And the same is "who is it"
"누구예요?“.

Actually "이에요" and "예요" are not always "it is"
but sometimes "he is" or "I am“. Because the
subject could be different depending on the
context. If I said "의진이에요" when I introduce
myself , it means "I am 의진". But if I raise my
tone at the end, the sentence could be asking if
'someone‘ is 의진.

You can also use ‘아니에요’ as opposite

meaning of "-이에요" and "예요". For example,
if I ask "커피예요?“, and when it is not
coffee, You would say “아니요. 커피 아니에요.“.

"This" in Korean is "이것", but in many cases, we
drop the final consonant ‘ㅅ’ for easier
pronunciation, so it becomes "이거" .

Technically, ‘이것’ and ‘이거’ should be translated

into "this thing“, because ‘이’ means this, and ‘것’
means 'thing'. However, you cannot use ‘이’ by
itself. because ‘이’ is a modifier that requires a
noun coming after.
