QUESTION 1

𝐴 and 𝐵 are two 2 × 2 matrices such that:

A= (12 25) and B= (−25 −2

1 )
(i) Find AB
1X5+2X(-2) 1X(-2)+2X1
2X5+5X(-2) 2X(-2)+5X1

5+(-4) -2+2

10+(-10) -4+5 = (10 01)

(ii) Determine B¹‫־‬, the inverse of B
Inverse= 1/det (adjoint)
Determinant= 5x1 - -2x(-2)= 5+4 = 9

Adjoint=
1 2
2 5 ( )
Inverse= 1/9x 1/1 1/9x2/1
1/9x2/1 1/9x5/1

B¹‫=־‬ (1/9
2 /9
2/9
5/9 )
(iii) Given that (−25 −2
1 ) ( xy )= (23) write ( xy ) as the product of two matrices
(−25 −2
1 ) ( xy )= (23)
(−25 xx −2 y
y
=
2
3 ) ()
Giving us 2 equations
1. (5x-2y=2)
2. (-2x+y=3)
Adding the equations : (5x-2y)+(-2x+y)=2+3
= 5x-2y-2x+y=5
= 3x-y=5
Solve for y
Y=3x-5
Now we can substitute the equation to get x
1. 5x-2(3x-5)=2
5x-6x+10=2
-x+10=2
X=8
Substitute to get y
Y=3x-5
Y=3(8)-5
Y=24-5
Y=19
X=8 y=19

(iv) Hence, calculate the values of x and y

X=8
Y=19

QUESTION 2

If P= (−56 37), Q= (61 −2

0)and R= (
w x
y z )
and 2P-Q=R, determine the values of

w, x, y and z.

2P=2 (−56 37) = (−10
