Sir Walter Scott
Sir Walter Scot was the key figure in creating a (0) COLOURFUL image of Scotland's past,
initially with his bestselling (1) __________ poem, then with his even more celebrated
novels, the first of which was Waverley. It was published anonymously in 1814 and, in
subsequent years, its (2) __________ were described as being 'by the author of Wciverleÿ,
which accounts for the term 'Waverley novels'. Although Scott made no public 3)
__________ of his (4) __________ until 1827, the writer's identity was an open secret long
before then. He wrote (5) __________ quickly, and the first collected edition of the Waverley
novels was published as early as 1819. A set of illustrations by Alexander Nasmyth was
produced for the second collected edition and these drawings were used on the title pages.

The passage below contains 10 mistakes. Find and correct them. (0) has been done as an
example (from in).
The notion that there are two species of African elephant first emerged about a decade ago.
The animals are very different (0) from size; the savannah or bush elephants stand about a
meter taller, and weigh twice as many as their forest-dwelling cousins. But whether this
means they are truly different species hasn’t been clear. Now a team of researchers from the
UK, Germany and the US, say they’ve resolved the issue. Written in the journal Public
Library of Science Biology), they say their analysis proves the subsistence of two distinctive
species. This has been a hotly-disputed question and it’s entirely possible that other
researchers challenge the claim. If it is confirmed, there may be important implications for
conservation. Forest's elephants are mainly found in Central and Western Africa, the areas
where poaching and ivory smuggling are most serious. There, populations are declined.
Further south, in the domain of the savannah elephants, the animals are thriving.
Conservatives say proving the species split could help concentrate attention, where it’s most
needed, in nations that have done little to crack out on poachers and smugglers.
Write in the correct words.
We all know that life on earth can be depressing at times. But if it’s really _ _t _ _ _g (1) you

Although we take our elementary life support system for _ _ _ _ _ _ d (8) here on earth, there
is no saying what might happen if we set out on a trek in space without the protection of the
earthly atmosphere. Happily, the contemporary space expeditions have been thoroughly
planned to _ _ f _ _ _ (9) our astronauts against the immensely adverse i _ _ _ _ _ (10) of the
inhospitable surroundings of space. Therefore, they are located in hermetic and sealed cabins
with a fresh _ _ _ _ _ y (11) of air and conditions simulating those on earth.
The first step towards space colonization is still to be made. The prospects are that the
pioneers will only be provided with the most necessary equipment and that their advancement
will be carefully examined by the experts in a variety of _ _ _ i _ s (12) including astronomy,
medicine, physics and biology.
