OUR STORY
SPUN was born in 2014 from a desire to return power to the hands
of communities and women who had lost everything in the 2001
Bhuj earthquake.

To help them recover and find a new source of sustenance, Wel-

spun India Ltd. partnered with local craftswomen, and worked to
help transform their lives and those of their families.
SPUN, a tale of stories that speaks of empowerment of village
women, sustainability, and crafts. We endeavour to preserve and
celebrate the handcrafting heritage that is woven through the lives
of traditional communities.

Known for their skill at intricate embroidery and the creation of

striking handicrafts, the women of these communities have been
skilled craftswomen for centuries. SPUN engages with them to
create lovingly handmade artisanal items. Inspired by designs
handed down through the ages, these products are
Perfect for the discerning customer with an eye for detail and pas-
sion to transform the world around them.

SPUN products are created with the aim of reinventing and recreat-
ing traditional patterns. SPUN is much more than handmade prod-
ucts. It is in fact, a reflection of the rich heritage of Indian art and
craft not just any thread that is weaved to provide comfort. It is the
thread with a soul that provides warmth to the MAKERS of the
beautiful hand-crafted products.
Through the skills and opportunities provided by SPUN, the women
see their incomes increase, and are empowered both professionally
and personally. From having the ability to provide for their children
to helping them pay for college and university degrees, they are
able to fulfil not only their own dreams but also their families’ great-
est hopes. Through their work with SPUN, these women are spin-
ning a new future for their communities.

As we secure our future generations in terms of education, we also

see the need to empower families so that they can sustain them-
selves in the near term and move towards growth and prosperity.

Up till now, SPUN has established 8 production centres, 6 embroi-

dery speciality centres and trained more than 2500 women.
Through our artisans’ efforts, we have impacted the lives of nearly
10,000 people across the region and have seen them earning more
than 27 million rupees collectively.

GEETA BEN
My journey with Spun started in the year of 2013,
when Khambhara Centre was set up. Spun gave
me the chance to learn and grow. Initial days were
tough as were learning new things. Slowly and
steadily, I started working on looms. Now I manage
my household chores and with work. It has helped
me to achieve my dream of educating my children.
Spun has provided a sense of direction in
our lives.

SANJULATA BEN
Spun gave me a chance to enhance my knowledge
and observe the world. As an Indian woman we are
taught to embroider. Initially my work wasn’t good
and I could do limited embroidery with no finesse in
them. After being trained my work improved and
I learnt about different craft, variety of stitches
along with colour combinations.

Hand block printing is ancient form of fabric enhancement tech-

nique indigenous to the sub-continent of India - tracing its origins
back to more than 4000 years ago. Practiced by the local communi-
ties in the vast deserts of Kutch in Gujarat, the double-sided block
printed textile is still made in a traditional way.

The process starts with washing the cloth multiple times to soften
the fabric and remove all impurities from it. After washing, the fabric
is treated with harda – a natural dye which gives the cloth a yellow
colour and works as a mordant, helping to fix the dyes. The printing
and washing stage is repeated multiple times with various natural
dyes and mordant such as harda, lime, alizarin (organic compound
used prominently for red dye), indigo and even camel dung.

Our block printed collections is an ode to traditional crafts, made

for modern contemporary homes, an amalgamation of art & design.
The unique collection of upcycling textile waste into woven base
and then block printing is something which can uplift any interior.
