KNITTER’S WORLD
C
reative sisters Lynda Wallace and Suzanne Kelly decided to raise money for the
Marie Curie Hospice, in Belfast, by selling their knitted treats that look good
enough to eat! When their beloved mother spent her final weeks in the Marie
Curie Hospice in Belfast, the sisters were touched by the support they received by the
team. Wanting to give something back in memory of their mum, as well as to help Suzanne is in
others in their time of need, they decided to raise money for the hospice, and through charge of sales
and deliveries
their fundraising efforts, have managed to donate an impressive £500 so far! They are
hoping to get to £1,000 by the end of December this year.
Now selling under the name Knitted Food Inc, the initial idea to make woolly bakes
came when Lynda was knitting for her family. “Over the years, I have enjoyed the
challenges of creating my own knits,” explains Lynda. “I have always wanted to create
and sell something more unique. When we bought my grandson a toy kitchen, instead
of buying lots of extra food, I decided to knit him some.” Lynda started with a slice of
It’s not all cake! There’s also lemon meringue pie. “The next design was a pink wafer biscuit. This was knitted in
a range of knitted bagels
with different toppings layers and kept its shape much better. I therefore used this idea of layers and
re-knitted the pie. It was better and that was the idea behind the other designs.”

Custom orders are available,
if you’d love to own a knitted
version of your favourite food The knits have proved very popular – many of the sales are from adults who use the
food for display purposes, or give a knitted version of someone’s favourite food as a
quirky gift. In fact, one customer was keen to let the sisters know that on the first day
Lynda designs she received her order of yarny biscuits, her husband, thinking they were real, reached
and knits all of for one to accompany his morning coffee. “Only as he got closer to the plate could he
the orders
see they were not in fact real food,” laugh the sisters.
The process of designing the food items varies greatly, with sometimes the smallest of
detail taking the longest to get right. For example, it took a full evening of trial and error
to get the size and shape of the slice of egg for the salad bagel correct. “However, once
an item such as the cheesecake was designed, I was able to create many variations
with a simple adaption, like a change of colour or a different decoration,” says Lynda. Lynda is an accomplished knitter
– before turning her hand to tasty
“We want the items to be as realistic as possible, and as practical as they can be treats she tackled toys
for children playing,” says Suzanne. “We want knitters and non-knitters alike to be
amazed by them and bring a little joy and fun to those who look at them or play with
them.” The pair are currently working on mince pies and ice cream cones! “We’re also
thinking about maybe tackling complete meals, like a full English breakfast!”

biscuits), or to contact the sisters, visit Suzanne’s Facebook profile by searching
