IGNEOUS

ROCKS
Fire-born
DEFINE
Extremely common in the Ea h's crust, igneous
rocks are volcanic and form from molten material.
They include not only lava spewed from volcanoes,
but also rocks like granite, which are formed by
magma that solidi es far underground.

Classi cations
Igneous Rocks can be classi ed according to their
texture and chemical and mineralogical
compositions. It can give us information on where
and how the rock formed.
BASALT
Other Types & Uses
Basalt is the most common igneous rock. It is used for wide variety purposes. It is most commonly
crushed for use as an aggregate in construction projects. Crushed basalt is used for road base,
concrete aggregate ,asphalt pavement aggregate, railroad ballast, lter stone in drain elds, and
may other purposes
PUMICE
Pumice is a light igneous rock with thousand of tiny bubbles in them. They are used to remove
dead skin from the bottom of our feet. It is used in abrasive cleaning products.
OTHER TYPES &
GRANITE USES
Granite rocks can be ve old. Some granite in Australia is believed to be more than four
billion years old. It is used especially for building and for monuments. Although when rocks
get that old, they’ve been altered enough by geological forces that its hard to classify them.
