Barriers to Communication

Number 1- Meme

The objective of the meme could be inferred that the above-mentioned person could refer to their
daily issues as gossip or gossip-worthy topics. Also, it could be perceived as an unhealthy
attitude by some and a lighthearted comedy by others.

Ways it could be misconstrued: It could be misunderstood by people who haven't experienced

therapy. They might find this discouraging if they feel that their therapist might gossip behind
their back. It could also make people not take therapy seriously as an important step in dealing
with their issues, which might make their attitude towards their mental health worse.

Barriers of Communication

1. Cultural barriers: People in many countries aren’t comfortable going to therapy, and their
perception of seeking help for mental health might be completely different from what the general
public accepts. Lighthearted comedy could, in this case, either make therapy feel appealing or, in
the worst case, discourage people. It may promote the misconception that people can slander
others in therapy. It could also make people not take therapy seriously as an important step in
dealing with their issues, and it might make their attitude towards their mental health worse if
they feel it is a time for gossip.
2. Psychological barriers: It could be a psychological barrier, and people who don’t require
therapy may not be able to relate to the above meme. The objective of the meme could be
inferred that the above-mentioned person could refer to their daily issues as gossip or gossip-
worthy topics. However, another viewpoint on this meme could be that the person has a lingering
feeling that their therapist might end up gossiping behind their back. It may promote the wrong
notion that the mental health professional in charge of one therapy might gossip behind their
back.
Number 2 - Social Media post

Reddit’s most downvoted comment- By EA sports in response to a Star Wars Battlefront 2 post.
(video-game).

Intention- The intention of the post by the reddit user was to bring to light the extremely high
amount of time and effort needed to unlock a character he desired- Darth Vader. By analysing
the post it can be seen that the base game was quite steeply priced at 80 dollars and the user does
not want to put money in the game after already purchasing it for a high price, the time required
to acquire the character without putting any money into it was high as well. With the help of the
daily credit system- which is a set number of in game currency awarded for completing daily
tasks, it was calculated by other reddit users that it would take a person around 6 years to unlock
beloved characters like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars franchise.

Barriers of Communication-

Organizational Barriers- EA or Electronic Arts as a company is notorious in the gaming industry.

It has earned such a reputation due to its increasing number of micro-transactions in its games,
the pay-to-win mechanics, and other cash grabbing practices. The reddit user in the original post
wished to raise his concerns on in the online forum but was given an unsatisfactory response.
The users were angry with the unapologetic comment on behalf of the company. Thus, that
comment now holds the world record for the most down-voted comment on the Reddit platform.
The user received a response claiming his post was a candid feedback, and the players should
feel a sense of accomplishment after investing a lot of time into the game. Whereas in reality the
post was not a candid feedback but a concern raised to adjust the games mechanics. Also it was
an unrealistic expectation on behalf of the developers that the players would be willing to invest
6 years worth of in game hours, only for the game’s player base to later move onto another game.

Plausible solution-

A solution to this issue could have been that the team in charge of replying to the user’s concerns
would not use terms that would agitate the audience while responding to a concern about its
game. A solution could be to avoid the use of the word candid feedback and on also to improve
the mechanics for the products released by the company and take notice of the player’s financial
grievances.

Number 3 Advertisement.

Dove- Dove real beauty sketches ad (April 2013)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpaOjMXyJGk&ab_channel=Dove
US
The Dove Real Beauty Sketches campaign was launched in 2013. In the advertisement a forensic
artist that had worked with the police would take their sketches based on their and a stranger’s
input about their appearance. It aimed to challenge beauty stereotypes and celebrate real beauty.
There were two sketches in total.

Misunderstanding

Dove's objective was to communicate a good message about self-perception and beauty, but
audiences misinterpreted the ad as promoting the idea that a woman's worth is primarily
determined by her appearance. Some viewers thought the advertisement implied that women's
self-judgements were less realistic or flattering than outsiders' perceptions. This created the
perception that women should seek validation from others regarding their appearance rather than
appreciating their own perception of themself and self-confidence.

Barriers of Communication

1. Cultural barriers: differences in beliefs and societal standards could have led to a
difference in attitudes among the audience towards the advertisement.
2. Generational barrier: The audience might have felt that the company was trying to nudge
them towards traditional systems where women had to seek validation with regard to
their appearance from other people.

Solution-

Dove responded to the criticism by emphasising that the campaign's true message was about
women's self-criticism and how they often see themselves more negatively than others do. They
wanted to promote self-acceptance and redefine the concept of beauty, but some viewers felt that
the execution of the message missed the mark and was potentially harmful. The best manner in
which the company's media team could have responded to the critics and viewers could have
been by sparking a discussion about society's views on beauty standards. They could have
mentioned in their answers to critics that people sometimes don't really believe a compliment
about their appearance because they don't know that they are more beautiful than they realise.
They could have reiterated their slogan. In conclusion, the debate against beauty standards was
beneficial for the company's advertisement.
Number 4- Movie “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”

The movie Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" takes place in the 28 th century and
follows the adventures of two special operatives by the names of Valerian and Laureline. They
uncover a secret plot by the human government. They encounter their share of problems on this
journey, language being one of the many.

The various forms of communication used are:

1. Verbal communication: Verbal communication is heavily used in the film. Due to a number of
planets’s citizens existing in one city, there is a huge set of languages. The protagonist uses
translators to solve this issue.
1. Telepathic communication: Some characters possess telepathic abilities, allowing them to
communicate directly with others' minds, transcending language barriers.
2. Holographic communication: Throughout the film, holographic technology is used to
enable real-time communication between individuals, regardless of their physical
locations.
3. Inter-species communication devices: As the film features a variety of alien species, the
operatives use specialised devices to communicate with species that use non-verbal or
unconventional communication methods.
4. Written communication: Text-based messaging is used by the characters to send
important information through documents, screens, and messages.

Barriers of Communication-

Language barrier: Misunderstandings occurred in the film when the characters reached an area
without much network coverage or when their equipment sustained critical damage. It became
challenging for them to communicate in these situations.

Cultural barrier: With a diverse collection of civilizations in the film, different cultures have
distinct norms, values, and customs, leading to communication difficulties and clashes in social
interactions. The hierarchy and difference in power and wealth between different factions is a
barrier for communication. Some parties may intentionally withhold information or use
communication as a tool for manipulation.

Technological barriers: The film presents advanced communication technologies, not all
characters have access to the same devices or networks, causing interruptions in communication
channels.

Psychological barriers: In certain situations, characters may be hesitant to share information due
to mistrust or conflicting interests, hindering effective communication. This occurred when
Valerian and his partner required crucial information.

Physical barriers: The diverse planets and environments in the movie present challenges for
communication between the characters. The barriers are extreme weather conditions, signal
interference, and a lack of compatible communication infrastructure for some aliens.

Throughout the film, Valerian and Laureline navigate these various forms of communication and
overcome the barriers of communication to achieve their mission successfully and maintain
peace among the factions.
Product proposal

Product Name: BlueMet

Slogan: Preventing accidents, one helmet at a time.
Product Idea: Motorcycle helmet with built-in communication systems
The idea behind this product was to tackle the frequent road accidents that take place when riders
on two-wheelers happen to pick up calls. The target audience is mainly people who use
two-wheelers, and the responses to this product in the survey conducted are crucial.

The objectives of this product are the following:

1. To be able to have a safe method of communication while on the road.
2. To code a certain set of voices as per the user's choice for secure voice recognition.
3. To make the communication process hands-free to prevent collisions and accidents.
4. To provide a GPS interface that gives users directions with a simple voice command and
informs users of diversions and accident-prone zones
5. Monitors traffic signals on a user's preferred routes and informs the user of any changes
in traffic signals.
The features of the helmet include a built-in GPS system, enhanced safety through hands-free
communication, and group communication with other helmets through a comms option. The
interface of the helmet is user-friendly and has Bluetooth connectivity to suit people of different
ages. The product also has an app by the same name, 'BlueMet'. The product's communication
device can be sold separately at a fixed price.

Audience Analysis Method:

The target audience consisted of frequent riders and people who don't use their two-wheelers as
frequently. The data collection method was a survey. The data representation is given below,
followed by its analysis. The sample size consisted of 12 people from different age groups. Most
of them required helmets for travelling by scooter. The most frequent mode of communication
was Bluetooth earphones. Bluetooth earphones could sometimes be an uncomfortable option due
to a lack of space inside the helmet. Plus, the noise cancellation option in these earphones can be
dangerous due to a lack of road sense. Most of the participants were split between the styles of
the helmet. The cost was one of the factors that the audience felt was important as well.
Feedback:
The audience felt the need for this product in the Indian scenario. Its high functionality could be
extremely useful in the modern day. It could help prevent unwanted collisions and trips to the
hospital. The feedback included suggestions like "Don't cancel the outside noise. It's not safe
while driving." This is extremely useful feedback, as this product is different from a typical
Bluetooth earphone. Noise from the external surroundings is important to maintain good road
sense, so our product will not include the noise cancellation feature. The target audience felt that
2000–3000 rupees would be sufficient for this helmet's price. An economical variant should be
made as well, along with the standard model, as the target audience felt that cost could be a vital
factor in their decision to use this product.

There were a minimum of three to four choices selected from the list of expectations by each
participant. The Bluetooth connectivity that was part of the expectations list is a feature of our
product. It can be paired with authentication from our app to prevent unwanted connections. To
produce a long-lasting battery, the technology is being worked upon. In the event of a collision,
measures should be taken to protect the customer and the product's assets, like the battery and
communication system, since a long battery life was considered important by the participants.

Case Study Analysis

XYZ Tech Solutions is a rapidly growing startup company specializing in developing innovative
software applications for the education sector. The company's diverse team comprises ten
employees with varying roles, including developers, designers, marketers, and project managers.
The team members are from different cultural backgrounds, educational experiences, and age
groups.

Specific Problem:
The team at XYZ Tech Solutions is currently working on a crucial project to develop an
advanced e-learning platform for a renowned educational institution. The project requires
seamless collaboration and coordination among team members due to the tight deadline and
complex nature of the software development.
One of the team members, Sarah, is an experienced developer known for her assertive
communication style. While Sarah's intentions are positive and focused on achieving project
goals, their direct and outspoken approach has unintentionally created challenges in team
dynamics. Some team members feel intimidated by Sarah's strong personality, leading to a
reluctance to voice their ideas or concerns during team meetings.
As a result, the team has noticed a significant imbalance in communication during brainstorming
sessions and decision-making processes. The lack of diverse inputs and perspectives has
hindered the team's ability to explore innovative solutions and fully tap into the collective
expertise of each team member.

each other's perspectives and challenges during the project? Has emotional intelligence training
impacted the team's ability to manage conflicts and maintain a positive work atmosphere? Can you
provide instances where emotional intelligence has played a role in fostering collaboration and
problem-solving within the team?

1) Types of Communication
How does the team at XYZ Tech Solutions utilise various communication channels to
discuss project progress and updates?
Since they are an organization, they might use formal communication channels like
Intranet. They could use the intranet to send emails within their organization. They could also
use circulars, newsletters, reports, etc.
Since they are also a start-up, they could use instant messaging apps and set up WhatsApp
groups as well. A WhatsApp group could be beneficial, as they could get faster responses from
their team.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using virtual communication tools like
emails and instant messaging compared to face-to-face interactions in the team's project?
The advantages of using a virtual communication channel would be that it is a faster
communication channel. Emails are a formal channel of communication. Instant messaging
might be a quicker option to gain participation from the team.
The disadvantage could be that the frequency of messages on instant messaging apps might end
up disturbing the group’s work flow. A suggestion to improve this scenario could be to separate
the instant messaging in WhatsApp into two groups: one formal group and one informal group.
Another disadvantage of using email could be that it may go unnoticed in a member’s personal
email inbox. A suggestion could be to have a formal email for official communications at the
startup.
Face-to-face communication has its own advantages. It includes real-time assessment of
responses through facial expressions and body language, which is much better than using a
digital tool. The disadvantage of using face-to-face interaction is that, at times, it can be difficult
to coordinate to set up a meeting. It can be time-consuming, and it is necessary to make a report
of the meeting for future reference. With virtual communication, there is simply a recording.
Also, face-to-face interaction is limited by location. The people who are located in locations far
away from the organisation can't communicate with the organisation through face-to-face
communication. For example, if the organisation wanted to collaborate with a person who lives
far away or in a different place, face-to-face interaction wouldn't be plausible.
Also, face-to-face communication is more disadvantageous for people who are deaf and mute.
How does the team strike a balance between one-on-one communication and group
discussions during project development?
At the moment, if there is a group discussion, Sarah would tend to dominate the group
discussion, and so more one-on-one communication would be needed for the transfer of ideas
and better communication and understanding among the rest of the team and one-on-one with
Sarah. When all the other members have a better understanding, it will be easier to direct the
discussions in a group towards a more constructive or positive outcome. The other nine members
have to sync up through a one-on-one communication style and have a one-on-one with Sarah as
well. And then, during group discussions, with their participation, they can establish an unwritten
norm that everyone’s participation is important and that they all need to contribute effectively
towards the development of the e-learning platform. The team must take care not to exclude
Sarah from their discussions. During discussions, they must encourage each other to speak and
contribute their ideas. Also, conducting informal sessions could be extremely helpful as it helps
bridge the cultural, age, and gender gaps among the team members.

2) Barriers to Communication:
How has the team at XYZ Tech Solutions dealt with language barriers, if any, in their
diverse team?

How do cultural differences among team members impact their communication styles and
interactions during the project?

The team at XYZ, when faced with any language barriers, was able to deal with them through
the use of the internet. The use of translator apps helped transfer ideas to members of the team
easily. The use of visual aids like charts and diagrams can help bridge the gap between language
barriers.
Having a multilingual team member or an interpreter could be beneficial during meetings.
Language workshops from time to time can be extremely helpful.

Cultural differences among team members impact their communication style, as cultural
differences affect their cues when a member feels that they can insert their idea into the
discussion. Cultural differences could affect their communication styles and interactions during
the project in different ways. there could be differences in beliefs, expressions, lifestyles, etc.
Maybe in some cultures, a dominant personality is considered productive; others may not feel
this way. With effective strategies, intercultural problems must be tackled. Conducting
workshops to increase cultural awareness can be beneficial in the long run.

Are there any instances where hierarchical barriers have hindered open and transparent
communication within the team?
In this case, hierarchical barriers played a role in hindering open and transparent communication
among the group as they had difficulty speaking to a senior developer, Sarah, about her dominant
personality and how it was affecting the brain-storming sessions, etc. The difference between
ranks could have deterred the members here.

3) Communication Patterns:
Can you identify any team members who exhibit assertive communication styles, and how
has this impacted decision-making and problem-solving within the team?
Based on the above-mentioned specific problem, Sarah seems to exhibit an assertive
communication style. This has negatively impacted the decision-making and problem-solving
within the team, as Sarah is dominant at meetings and brainstorming sessions. There is an
imbalance in the brainstorming sessions and in the decision-making process. The other nine team
members seem to be passive in their communication styles or they are unable to express their
ideas. It could be a psychological barrier. Emotional states, biases, and preconceived notions
could impact effective communication. If the other team members do not ensure that Sarah isn’t
dominating the decision-making, then it would cause problems for their group if every team
member's voice wasn't heard.

How does the team address passive communication patterns, if any, to ensure that every
team member's voice is heard?

The team could address passive communication patterns, if any, by making use of channels like
email or informal meetings to make sure every team member's voice is heard. Platforms like
instant messaging could also be used to bridge the gap between hierarchies in the organization.

What strategies have been implemented to manage conflicts and disagreements

constructively within the team?

To manage conflicts and disagreements constructively within the team at XYZ Tech Solutions,
several strategies can be implemented. These strategies aim to foster open communication,
encourage diverse perspectives, and create a positive and inclusive team environment. Some of
these strategies include:

Defining a clear action plan for communication and conflict resolution within a team This could
include encouraging active listening, respecting different viewpoints, and promoting a culture of
constructive feedback. Ensuring that team meetings are well-structured and inclusive is
extremely important. All team members must be asked openly during discussions and
brainstorming sessions to share their ideas and participate.

Mediation When conflicts arise, a neutral party like management is essential for maintaining an
atmosphere of order and preventing emotions from erupting.
Encouraging empathy and understanding among team members is important, as well as to
encourage individuals to consider other team members' perspectives and experiences. This can
lead to improved interactions.
Providing the group with options like anonymous feedback, suggestion boxes, or regular
one-on-one meetings with team leaders could be helpful. This can help team members feel
comfortable expressing their ideas and mentioning any concerns.

Training sessions on diversity and inclusion to raise awareness about the importance of
embracing different perspectives and working collaboratively could be responsible for improving
group dynamics. Team-building activities and social events can help increase synergy among
team members and build a good rapport among them.
They can also be given the tools to diffuse a situation, which are to identify the cause of the
problem, brainstorm possible solutions, and reach a majority on the best resolution

4) Role of Gender in Communication:

Have there been any observable differences in communication styles between male and
female team members?

If so, how do these differences manifest, and do they influence team dynamics?

How does the team ensure that gender diversity does not lead to unconscious biases in
decision-making or task allocation?

Can you provide examples of how the team promotes an inclusive environment that values
diverse perspectives, regardless of gender? (more maybe.)

There is a specific communication problem in the case of Sarah. She exhibits dominance in her
communication with her team members. This upsets the group dynamics as the others remain
silent and do not participate enough. While Sarah has good intentions, her dominance has
negative effects. The team promotes an inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives
regardless of gender by assessing members' attitudes and contributions and focusing on the
assigned task rather than promoting a bias towards gender or making an issue of gender. They
were more focused on Sarah’s attitude and dominant personality than the fact that she was a
woman. Thus, by addressing this issue in a rational manner, the team promotes an inclusive
environment that values diversity regardless of gender. The team is also inclusive, as it consists
of professionals from various backgrounds regarding their qualifications; there are developers,
designers, marketers, and project managers on the team. The group also consists of members
from various cultural backgrounds, educational experiences, and age groups.
Gender diversity shouldn't lead to unconscious biases in decision-making or task
allocation.
The team should ensure that they are more influenced by the merits of individuals and their
experiences than solely by gender. Addressing the issue of imbalance in communication and
encouraging more inclusive interactions during team meetings can help overcome any barriers
that may be hindering effective collaboration and decision-making. Creating a supportive
environment that values diverse viewpoints and encourages collaboration can lead to a more
successful and innovative project outcome. Creating a channel for open dialogue and
encouraging a culture of respect is also important. In this manner, the team ensures that gender
diversity does not lead to unconscious biases in decision-making or task allocation.

5) Role of Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

How do team members demonstrate empathy for each other's perspectives and challenges
during the project?

Has emotional intelligence training impacted the team's ability to manage conflicts and
maintain a positive work atmosphere?

Can you provide instances where emotional intelligence has played a role in fostering
collaboration and problem-solving within the team?

The team members demonstrate empathy towards each other’s perspectives and challenges while
developing the eLearning platform by socializing with each other and taking part in group
activities that increase synergy. They promote an inclusive work space and try to correct a
person’s attitude in a professional manner rather than getting into personal conflicts. They are
inclusive of gender and are more focused on a person’s contributions and attitudes towards the
project than making a problem of gender.
Here we can also see some emotional intelligence in the way they handled the issue they faced
with Sarah. They were able to ideate in a one-on-one setting, and in group discussions, they were
able to establish the norm of everyone’s participation by putting forward their thoughts on the
learning platform. Thus, emotional intelligence training has made the team’s ability to manage
conflict more systematic and organized, teaching them to take calculated steps towards creating a
positive work environment. Thus, the training has been effective by improving upon the
imbalance in their group dynamics and their teamwork skills.

Instances where emotional intelligence has played a role in fostering collaboration and
problem-solving within the team could be through active listening among team members, having
empathy for others or putting yourself in another's shoes, asking of questions among team
members to check in on each other without critiquing, acknowledging the team member's
feelings and emotions, offering support and assistance, sharing personal experiences, and being
mindful of tone and body language. These are instances that demonstrate emotional intelligence.
By following this, the team members can show their empathy and emotional intelligence.

training sessions for employees at Starbeck and Amulya for a smooth integration of
products and services, and to increase coordination and efficiency.

8 Dystopian and Bleak Futures shown in Literature

In literature, dystopian and bleak futures have been a source of fascination for generations of
readers. These imaginative and often cautionary tales transport us to worlds where society has
taken a dark and foreboding turn. They serve as both a reflection of contemporary concerns and a
warning about the potential consequences of our actions. At the heart of these narratives lies a
compelling exploration of societal decay, the consequences of unchecked power, and the
resilience of the human spirit. These tales, while often set in imagined futures, are rooted in our
fears, aspirations, and the pressing issues of our times.
We'll uncover worlds where government surveillance knows no bounds, where individuality is
suppressed in the pursuit of perfection, where literature is contraband, and where reality is
distorted through the lens of totalitarian rule. These stories remind us of the fragility of freedom,
the importance of human connection, and the price we may pay for complacency.

1. "1984" by George Orwell (1949)

In George Orwell's "1984," the future is a hauntingly bleak and totalitarian world. The novel is
set in a dystopian society under the oppressive rule of Big Brother, where citizens are subjected
to constant surveillance, manipulation, and propaganda. Independent thought is a crime, and
language itself is manipulated to control and restrict freedom of expression. The government's
omnipresent presence, thought police, and the erasure of historical truths create an atmosphere of
perpetual fear and conformity. "Newspeak" eliminates words and concepts that could challenge
the regime, rendering rebellion nearly impossible. "1984" serves as a stark warning about the
dangers of authoritarianism and the fragility of individuality.

2. "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley (1932)

Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" presents a bleak vision of the future, one where society has
achieved a superficial sense of stability and happiness through extreme control and manipulation.
In this dystopian world, people are genetically engineered and conditioned to fit specific societal
roles, leading to a lack of individuality and genuine emotion. The pursuit of pleasure is
encouraged, but it is a shallow and ultimately unfulfilling pursuit, devoid of deeper human
experiences. The absence of true human connection and the suppression of intellectual curiosity
create a sterile and soulless society, where conformity is prized above all. "Brave New World"
serves as a stark critique of the cost of sacrificing individuality and personal freedom in the
pursuit of societal harmony.

3. "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood (1985)

Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" unveils a harrowing future where women's rights and
autonomy have been entirely stripped away. In the theocratic, dystopian Republic of Gilead,
fertile women are reduced to mere reproductive vessels called Handmaids, subject to ritualized
rape and subjugation. Religious fundamentalism has taken hold, leading to an oppressive society
where women are forbidden to read, write, or express their thoughts freely. Fear and surveillance
are rampant, and individuality is quashed under theocratic rule. This bleak future is a chilling
portrayal of gender-based oppression and serves as a cautionary tale about the potential
consequences of extremist ideologies on women's rights and human freedoms.

4. "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury (1953)

Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451" portrays a bleak future where a totalitarian regime burns books
to suppress dissent and independent thought. In this dystopian society, firemen are tasked with
igniting fires rather than extinguishing them, erasing the knowledge and ideas contained within
books. Intellectual curiosity is forbidden, and people are enslaved by shallow entertainment. The
population is kept in a state of blissful ignorance, numbed by mindless media. This bleak future
serves as a stark warning against the perils of censorship, intellectual apathy, and the devaluation
of knowledge. It underscores the vital role of literature in preserving freedom of thought and
resisting oppressive regimes.

5.. "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro (2005)

Kazuo Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go" paints a melancholic future where human clones, raised for
organ donations, live in a world devoid of hope and personal agency. These "donors" are raised
in isolated institutions, unaware of their ultimate fate, and conditioned to accept their role
without question. The novel explores themes of love, identity, and the profound injustices of
their existence. This bleak vision serves as a poignant commentary on society's capacity for
inhumanity and the complacency that can enable such a dystopian reality. Ishiguro's narrative
confronts us with the emotional toll of a world where lives are reduced to mere spare parts and
personal dreams are shattered.
6. "Oryx and Crake" by Margaret Atwood (2003)

Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake" unveils a haunting vision of a future world marred by
environmental devastation, genetic manipulation, and moral decay. In this bleak future,
corporations wield unchecked power, leading to the reckless engineering of new life forms and
the spread of deadly viruses. The divide between the privileged elite and the impoverished
masses is stark, reflecting a world in which science and technology have brought both progress
and peril. Atwood's narrative underscores the consequences of unchecked scientific ambition and
environmental neglect, while also exploring themes of isolation, the loss of human connection,
and the profound effects of human hubris on the natural world. The main character Snowman,
known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a
world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the
beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved.

7. "The Giver" by Lois Lowry (1993)

Lois Lowry's "The Giver" introduces a meticulously controlled and seemingly utopian society,
which, paradoxically, is a bleak and emotionless future. In this community, memories and
emotions are suppressed, and every aspect of life is tightly regulated by the government to
eliminate pain and suffering. The protagonist, Jonas, is chosen to bear the collective memories of
the past, revealing the cost of such a rigidly controlled existence. The bleakness arises from the
absence of individuality, personal choice, and the richness of human experience. "The Giver"
raises poignant questions about the value of free will, the importance of emotional depth, and the
sacrifices made to maintain a facade of harmony.

8. "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins (2008)

Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games" envisions a dystopian future in which a totalitarian
Capitol exercises merciless control over twelve oppressed districts. Annually, a brutal spectacle
known as the Hunger Games forces each district to send one child to fight to the death for the
Capitol's entertainment. The bleakness lies in the stark contrast between the Capitol's opulence
and the districts' poverty, as well as the ruthless manipulation of youth for political purposes. The
novel reflects on the moral degradation and the dehumanizing effects of entertainment and
political oppression. It serves as a chilling reminder of the consequences of power, wealth, and
societal indifference to human suffering.

In conclusion, the exploration of bleak and dystopian futures in literature serves as a powerful
mirror to our own world, offering cautionary tales and thought-provoking narratives. These
literary works, ranging from George Orwell's oppressive "1984" to Suzanne Collins' chilling
"The Hunger Games," have a common thread in their ability to magnify contemporary issues,
societal concerns, and the human condition in settings characterized by despair, oppression, and
existential challenges. The key points are that the stories contain societal reflections, loss of
humanity, ethical dilemmas, and they deal with the human survival instinct and hope.
They compel readers to question the consequences of unchecked power, the erosion of
individuality, and the fragility of societal structures. These narratives also encourage us to
contemplate the importance of personal freedom, the preservation of knowledge, and the
endurance of hope even in the most dire circumstances.
Ultimately, the enduring appeal of dystopian literature lies in its capacity to stimulate critical
thinking and introspection, challenging us to examine the choices we make as a society and the
potential ramifications of those choices. These stories remind us that while the future may appear
bleak in the face of adversity, the human spirit's resilience and capacity for change can offer a
glimmer of hope amidst the darkness.

Business review of Colosseum E-Sports.

Colosseum E-sports is a popular gaming cafe located near Christ University. It was started in
2012 by a duo of friends- Mayur Vaishnav and Sumanth G who are the co-owners of the
establishment. They felt that as gamers there wasn't a proper platform to prove their skills so
that was the reason behind the start of this business. The gaming systems use an interface
called iCafeCloud where gamers can pay and use the systems for a set number of hours. The
latest video games are available here like Valorant, Overwatch, Fortnite, League of Legends,
Counter Strike: Global Offensive, etc.

Structure: It's day to day operations is run by Mr. Sumanth who keeps a tab of the visitors. An
option to pay later is offered as well. Mr. Sumanth manages the daily accounts. Mr. Mayur
places orders for parts related to the gaming computers, for repairs and he schedules
appointments to fix technical issues which would interfere in the smooth functioning of the cafe.
There are also 2 cooks who manage the kitchen and provide delicious food to the customers.

Target audience: Their audience lies within the age group of 12 to 40 years with a majority of
their customers coming under the ages of 18 to 30. The majority of their customers are
university students and office goers who visit after their office hours. The gaming systems are
well equipped with the latest video games. The set up consisting of gaming computers and
gaming consoles is of high quality. Gaming for one hour would cost about seventy rupees and
gaming for two hours costs hundred rupees. Gaming on the console costs 300 rupees for 1
hour. The following are my suggestions to improve this business.
Strategies:
1. Ensuring timely updates for the games that they offer is very important as it was an issue
faced by gamers that visited the place At times their favourite game wouldn't have its update
installed. Getting the updates installed on time would ensure their customers come more often.
Maintaining the prexisting internet speed of 1 GB per second is crucial along with ensuring
lesser power cuts. Installing a generator would be a good investment.

2. Promoting their gamer girl discount- They offer a gamer girl discount which is economical for
girls interested in gaming. They charge around a 100 rupees for four hours and charge regular
rates on subsequent recharges. The offer can be used once a week. Promoting this offer with
the help of advertisements could ensure a more diverse customer base and it would make the
establishment more vibrant.

3. Expanding and opening new locations where a gaming culture is evident- The business has
seen a growth of 20% per cent per year. It makes a profit of 20,000 rupees per month after
deducting the operating costs like electricity and wifi, etc. The main consumers of this type of a
service would be gamers, students, and corporate so the owner could find locations containing
all three in order to make profits.

4. Launching Ad campaigns and hosting e-sports events: The gaming cafe could run ad
campaigns as it had done in the past in collaboration with various energy drink companies like
red bull, Mountain Dew, etc. Post-covid the ad campaigns had reduced because of a lack of
cash flow due to the lockdown. They could now start launching ad campaigns and promote
energy drinks. The gaming cafe used to host a lot of e-sports events before however there was
a sudden hiatus. E-sports events could keep their customers engaged and the spirit of
competition would be refreshing.

5. They could start an instagram page and promote their gaming cafe on it and run special
festival deals, and discounts. For example, during halloween they could provide a 50% discount
on their rates. This would bring in more customers and their profit would increase.

6. Expanding on the food options: The gaming cafe at the moment provides food items like
pizzas, and maggi. It has a hygenic and well maintained kitchen. There is also a couple of
affordable drink options along with energy drinks. They could add a few more options after
suggestions from their customers either in the form of feedback, reviews or surveys. This would
increase customer satisfaction.
