Egg Drop

Guidelines

OBJECTIVE
The objective of this competition is to design and construct a container that will
prevent the eggs from breaking when the container is dropped. The competition will
be judged on the number of times the container can be dropped without breaking the
eggs. The eggs may be dropped at several different heights, from one, two, and
three stories.
JUDGING CRITERIA
● Height of the last drop; or height from which the eggs did not break.
● Originality, feasibility, and reusability (in the case of a tie in highest drop).
REQUIREMENTS
● One (1) egg per team
ACCEPTED MATERIALS FOR THE CONTAINER
● Paper
● Plastic
● Cardboard
● Rubber
● Straws
● Any kind of adhesive tape (any kind of glue is not allowed)
DESIGN AND CONTEST RULES
● No kits or pre-made designs may be used. The structure must be the individual’s
invention. The structure should be made only with the following materials stated
above. Any material not listed results in the deduction of points.
● The team must prepare a sketch of their container design and a bill of materials
used.
● The structure must be completely released (no strings or other attachments). NO
PARACHUTES!
● The structure must land in a designated target area.

● The container + egg must not weigh more than 2.2 pounds or 1 kilogram.
● The dimensions of the container must not exceed 10 inches.
● The egg must be accessible from the container to check for cracks and leaking.
● The container + egg can be dropped from the first, second, or third floor. Each
floor has corresponding points. Teams can select from where to drop their
container + egg and can have multiple floor drops. The team can only proceed
based on the status of their egg after the drop.

Boat Race Guidelines
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this competition is to design and construct a boat that relies on
mechanical potential energy to do work. The competition will be judged based on the
speed and the uniqueness of the boat.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Catapult Glider

OBJECTIVE
The objective of this activity is to bring together students' knowledge of engineering
and airplanes, applying what they have previously learned about lift, weight, thrust,
and drag to glider models, as well as their understanding of the control surfaces
elevator, rudder, and aileron that control pitch, yaw, and roll, respectively.
JUDGING CRITERIA
● Air time of the glider
● Appearance and materials used in designing and constructing the glider.
ACCEPTED MATERIALS FOR THE WATER ROCKET
● Paper cups or plate
● Plastic
● Cardboard
● Any kind of glue/tapes
● Any kind of wood
● Paints

DESIGN AND CONTEST RULES

● No kits or pre-made designs may be used. The structure must be the individual’s
invention. The structure should be made only with the following materials stated
above. Any material used that is not listed as acceptable results in the deduction
of points.
● The team must prepare a sketch of their catapult glider design and a bill of
materials used.
● Parts of the glider may be painted or otherwise decorated.
● When ready, have each team test its gliders. Have the student pairs within each
team fly their glider three times and record the distance traveled and time aloft
for each flight. (These three times are their trials.) The new results are the
dependent variables. Have the student pairs average their results.
● The catapult glider must have the longest airtime for extra points.
