Topic – MEASUREMENT HANDOUT

Name ________________________ Sec ______Date____________

We use different units to measure length, weight and volume of

things. The system of units which is commonly used to measure length,
weight or volume is called ‘Metric System’.

Measurement of Length.
 We measure smaller objects using smaller unit which is
‘millimetre’ and longer distances using a bigger unit which is
‘kilometre’.
Kilometre Hectometr Decametre Metre Decimetre Centimetre Millimetre

km hm dam m dm cm mm
1000m 100m 10m 1m 1/10 m 1/100m 1/1000m

Measurement of Weight
 We measure light objects using smaller unit which is ‘milligram’
and heavy objects using a bigger unit which is ‘kilogram’.
Kilogram Hectogram Decagram gram Decigram Centigram Milligram

kg hg dag g dg cg mg
1000g 100g 10g 1g 1/10 g 1/100g 1/1000g
Measurement of Capacity
 We measure small quantity of liquid using small unit which is
‘milligram’ and large quantity using a bigger unit which is
‘kilolitre’.

Kilolitre Hectolitre Decalitre Litre Decilitre Centilitre Millilitre

1000 L 100 L 10 L 1L 1/10 L 1/100 L 1/1000L

Points to remember
 The standard unit of Length is Metre.
 The standard unit of Weight is Kilogram.
 The standard unit of Capacity is Litre.
 Each unit is 10 times its next unit.
 To convert bigger unit to smaller unit we multiply.
