Project Summary

Objectives
Created in 2014, 1000 Pieces Puzzle is an international exchange programme which offers a unique professional
development opportunity for young artists.
The programme brings together two groups of aspiring artists from Belgium and the UK, who spend 12 days
exploring workshops in technique, choreography, dance film and collaboration as well as developing
entrepreneurial and leadership skills. It is divided up between the UK and Belgium with all the artists spending 6
days in Brussels and 6 days in London. At the end of the 12 days, they share work that has been created through
the residencies.

1000 Pieces Puzzle aims at supporting young people in the acquisition of knowledge, skills and competences, as
well as in their personal and professional development. The project also raises the participants' cultural
awareness and understanding, while offering them the opportunity to build an international network of contacts. It
reinforces synergies and transitions between (non-)formal training and entrepreneurship and ensures the
recognition of the competences gained through the exchange.

Activities
The exchange offers a combination of practical workshops, seminars, mentoring, reflection sessions and
free-time activities.
It takes place between London and Brussels and makes room for :
- peer-to-peer programming: In order to give participants more ownership of the programme, they will co-curate
the programme of the exchange in their country.
- preparatory sessions: the programming and curating skills of the participants will be developed and finetuned
through preparatory sessions with the support of partner organisation staff prior to the exchange weeks.
- online workshops: to allow for more free time and breathability in the programme for the participants to reflect on
and inform content, some of the workshops to take place online before and after the exchange weeks

The programme constantly centres around the participants, who take up a number of roles throughout the
exchange. At times learners, curators, producers, performers, role models, leaders, supporters, team players,
motivators, etc. They contribute to their own and their peers’ learning trajectory and are encouraged to challenge
themselves and to develop their leadership skills.

1000 Pieces Puzzle brings together 30-or-so participants. These young, mostly untrained (aspiring) dance artists
from diverse background are in need of high-quality informal skill and attitude training, as well as confidence
building, empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Impact
Through the programme, the participants will improve:
- their skills and knowledge in dance, business, marketing, communication, media literacy and production
- their understanding and responsiveness to social and cultural diversity
- their sense of initiative, empowerment and entrepreneurship
- their opportunities for professional development
- their self-esteem and their confidence in their abilities as artists

The participating organisations are also expected to be impacted positively with the following advancements:
- blueprint for future intercultural projects with a better understanding of social and cultural diversity
- increased international reach and long-lasting network and contacts abroad
- exchange of good practices and mutual inspiration in how to address the needs of young people, participants
with fewer opportunities and local communities
- sense of accomplishment and renewed motivation among the team
- innovative approaches and new dynamics in the way they approach their workflow
