    A) Imagine Elias Openshaw kept a diary Here is what he wrote at the

    end of 10 March 1883. Use the linking words below to complete

    It’s night time now and I feel afraid, SO I have locked the doors very
    carefully. Today I received the five orange pips from the KKK. I’ve been
    safe from them for the last 14 years, BUT now I know it’s the end.
    This morning, I was at the breakfast table with young John WHEN the
    servant brought in the post. There was a letter WHICH came from
    Pondicherry in India. At first, I was surprised, BECAUSE I didn’t know
    anyone WHO lives there. I realized that it meant death! The five orange
    pips were in the envelope,AND they fell on to my plate.
    THEN, I hurried upstairs to fetch the K.K.K box from the locked room.
    WHILE John was watching, I burnt all the papers in the box. But it’s no
    good. I know that they will find me and kill me! And IF poor John gets my
    money one day, he will die, too!

    B)Read chapter 3 (KKK) Answer the following questions


    1) According to Sherlock Holmes, why did Elias Openshaw have to
    leave America? BECAUSE HE HAD ENEMIES.
    2) Why did he live a lonely life and lock his doors so carefully in
    England? BECAUSE HE WAS PARANOID AND AFRAID OF BEING
    KILLED.
    3) What did Sherlock and Watson conclude from the fact that two of
    the letters came from India and Scotland? THEY CONCLUDED THAT
    THE WRITER WAS ON A SHIP WHEN HE WROTE THE LETTERS.
    4) Why was Sherlock Holmes worried? BECAUSE JOHN’S ENEMY WAS
    ALREADY IN LONDON.

    C)Now answer these questions about chapter 4: The last deaths


    1) What news appeared in the newspaper the following morning?
    THEY READ IN THE NEWSPAPER THAT JOHN OPENSAHW WAS DEAD.
    2) Did Sherlock believe that it was an accident? NO, HE DIDN’T. HE
    KNEW THAT JOHN HAD BEEN KILLED.
    3) That day, Sherlock Holmes looked at hundreds of ship papers. What
    did he discover about the Star, one of the ships? THAT THE SHIP
    HAD BEEN IN THREE PORTS AND THAT THAT MORNING THE STAR
    HAD LEFT LONDON TO SAIL BACK TO GEORGIA
    4) What did Sherlock send to the captain of the Star? SHERLOCK SENT
    HIM A LETTER WITH FIVE ORANGE PIPS.
    5) What would happen to the captain and his men when they arrived
    in the USA?
    WHEN THEY ARRIVED IN AMERICA, THEY WOULD GET THE PIPS AND
    THEN THE POLICE WOULD CATCH THEM.
