3rd Quarter Week 1

Hormones involved
in Reproductive
Systems
EXPLAIN THE ROLE OF HORMONES INVOLVED IN THE FEMALE
AND MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS (S10LT - IIIB -34)
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES (MELCS)
EXPLAIN THE ROLE OF HORMONES INVOLVED IN THE FEMALE
AND MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS (S10LT - IIIB -34)

At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to:

a. explain the hormones secreted by the male

reproductive system;
b. explain the hormones secreted by the female
reproductive system;
c. discuss the role of hormones involved in the male
and female reproductive system; and
d. explain the effect of hormone secretion in the
development of an organism.
Let’s unlock the key terms

 estrogen
reproductive hormone in females that assists in
endometrial regrowth, ovulation, and calcium
absorption
 progesterone
reproductive hormone in women; assists in
endometrial re-growth and inhibition of FSH and
LH release
 testosterone
reproductive hormone in men that assists in sperm
production and promoting secondary sexual
characteristics
Let’s unlock the key terms

 follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)

reproductive hormone that causes sperm
production in men and follicle development in
women
 gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
hormone from the hypothalamus that causes the
release of FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary
 luteinizing hormone (LH)
reproductive hormone in both men and women,
causes testosterone production in men and
ovulation and lactation in women
Let’s unlock the key terms

 Sertoli cell
a cell in seminiferous tubules that assists
developing sperm and makes inhibin
 inhibin
hormone made by Sertoli cells; provides negative
feedback to hypothalamus in control of FSH and
GnRH release
Early or Late Onset Puberty - YouTube
 Puberty is the term used
to describe the
development al changes
a child undergoes to
become sexually mature
and physiologically ready
for reproduction.
 It normally begins
between the ages of 8-14
in females and between
the ages of 10-16 in
males.
Endocrine System
 Hormones are chemical substances that act like
messenger molecules in the body and secreted
by endocrine glands directly into the blood.

 Hormones plays a vital role in individual’s growth

and development, metabolism, reproduction,
mood, and sexual function.
 Human reproductive cycles are controlled by the
interaction of hormones from the hypothalamus and
anterior pituitary with hormones from reproductive organs.
 Hypothalamus is a small region
of the brain. It is located at the
base of the brain, near the
pituitary gland.

 Puberty begins when the

hypothalamus starts to release
gonadotropin-releasing
hormone (GnRH) and travels to
the pituitary gland.
 Pituitary gland is a small
gland under brain that
produces hormones that
control other glands
throughout the body.

 GnRH triggers the release of

two Puberty hormones at the
pituitary gland – Luteinizing
hormones (LH) and Follicle-
stimulating hormone (FSH)
 Luteinizing hormones (LH) and
Follicle-stimulating hormone
(FSH) acts on the primary
reproductive organs the
Ovaries for the female and
Testes for the male.

 In male, LH is responsible in
the production of
testosterone.
Testosterone affects a man’s
appearance and sexual
development. It stimulates
sperm production as well as a
man’s sex drive
FSH stimulates testicular growth
and enhances the production
of Androgen.
Androgens are responsible
for the development of
secondary sexual
characteristics in men.
Functions of Testosterone
 Stimulates spermatogenesis
 Secondary sex
characteristics:
- Deepening of the voice
- Growth of facial, axillary, and
pubic hair
- Beginnings of the sexual urge
Ovaries are two oval-
shaped organs that lie to
the right and left of the
uterus.
LH stimulates Estrogen and
Progesterone production
from the ovary.
Estrogen is responsible for
female reproduction the
secondary sexual
characteristics.
Progesterone helps prepare
the female body for
conception and pregnancy.
Progesterone triggers the
lining of the uterus to
accept a fertilized egg
and regulates the monthly
menstrual cycle.
Functions of Estrogen
 Assists in endometrial
regrowth, ovulation
and calcium
absorption

 Secondary sex
characteristics:
- Breast development
- Widening of the hips
- Shorter period
necessary for bone
maturation
Functions of Progesterone
 Assists in endometrial re-growth
 Inhibition of the release FSH
and LH

- The Follicle Stimulating Hormones

(FHS) stimulates development of
egg cells or ova
