INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRICAL METERING (MET 101)

This course aims to introduce the student generally to metering and safety. At the end of this course, students should have a good understanding of
electricity, generation of electricity, various types /classification of meters, Load types, metering in Nigeria and Safety.

S/N Module Description


1. Electricity and energy generation Introduce the student to the basics of electricity and electricity generation. Topic covered shall
include.
 Basics of electricity.
 Voltage, Current, Power, Energy.
 Electrical equations and calculations.
 Sources of electricity.
 Generation, Transmission and Distribution of electricity.
 Terms and definitions in metering.

2. Safety and protection. Student shall be introduces intensively to general safety requirement in Metering.
 The need for safety.
 Safety tools and equipments.
 Electrical protection devices.
 Electrocution.
 General safety guidelines.
 Safety hazards.
 Resolving safety hazards.
 Safety standards.

3. Introduction to Electricity Metering The sudden shall be introduced to the various concept of electricity metering, the various classes &
types of meters as well as their area of Applications. Topics to be covered shall include:
 Electromechanical meters, and solid state meters.
 Single and three phase meters.
 Credit and prepaid meters.
 LV and HV meters.
4. Electrical LOAD The student shall be introduced to the various types of Electrical Load, and understand better how
energy is been calculated. The student shall be engages in a lot of calculations. Topics covered shall
include:
 AC waveforms, Phase and Phase relationship.
 Inductance and Capacitance.
 The Power Triangle
 Power Factor
 Type of loads (inductive, capacitive, resistive).
 Load and Energy Calculations.

5. Metering in Nigeria. The student shall be introduced to the metering hierarchy in Nigeria with more emphasis to
understanding and interpreting the metering code.
 NERC; Roles and Responsibility.
 The Metering Committee; Roles and Responsibility.
 Meter Service Providers (MSPs).
 IEC Metering Standards.
 The Metering Code.
