CHAPTER 1

This chapter contains the Background of the study, Statement of the problem, Significance of the

study, Research Paradigm, Scope and Delimitation, and Definition of the Term.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY AND RATIONALE

During the lockdown, consumers have expanded their usage of technologies and sought

innovative shopping methods that facilitate work, education, and consumption at home.

Furthermore, consumer behavior and every consumption have a time and place limit, as existing

habits and necessities are abandoned or sacrificed and consumers adopt new habits and activities

(Sheth 2020).

Online shopping platforms have rapidly expanded in the age of digitization, providing

convenience, variety, and a whole new purchasing experience. These platforms have exposed

consumers to a world where purchasing is as easy as clicking a button, especially when

combined with targeted advertising techniques. Due to the influence of social media trends, peer

approval, and the attraction of rapid satisfaction, internet shopping can be particularly appealing

for young people, especially students. Like many other educational institutions, Mapandan

Catholic School is home to a group of kids who have grown up in the digital age and are

frequently exposed to these online purchasing sites.

Online shopping has long been predicted to become dominant. In 2013, Wainewright predicted

that the future of retail is going to be "click-and-collect” rather than traditional brick-and-mortar

stores; hence traditional retailers have to learn how to survive the transition into the digital age.

(Qureshi, Fatima, and Sarwar, 2014)

The way customers buy goods and services has changed dramatically with the advent of the

digital age. The development of e-commerce and online shopping platforms has made

purchasing easier and more comfortable than before.

While this has many benefits for both customers and businesses, it has also raised new issues and

obstacles with shopping behavior, particularly compulsive buying. Traditionally, compulsive

buying has been understood as a repetitive, uncontrollable urge to make purchases, regardless of

need or financial capability.(Sarwar,2014) It’s lead to an addiction, where the act of buying

brings temporary relief or satisfaction, but is often followed by feelings of regret or guilt.

The early 21st century witnessed an explosion in the number of online retailers. Platforms

like Amazon, shoppe, Lazada, and countless others made it possible to shop from the comfort of

one’s home. These platforms offer a vast array of products, easy checkout processes, and in

some cases, instant gratification with features like one-day shipping. Online shopping platforms,

with their endless scrolling, personalized recommendations, and flash sales, can sometimes

encourage impulsive and compulsive buying behaviors. The ease of ‘one-click’ purchases and

the dopamine rush of receiving a package can further fuel the urge to buy. As online shopping

continues to grow and evolve, understanding the impact it has on compulsive buying behavior

becomes crucial. This can lead to better consumer protection measures, strategies for online

retailers to promote healthier buying habits, and interventions for those struggling with

compulsive buying. (Mattila and Enz, 2002)

This study aims to delve into the interplay between the convenience of online shopping

platforms and compulsive buying behaviors, seeking to understand the depth and nuances of this

modern consumer challenge.

The aim of the study was to investigate compulsive shopping by Senior High school students of

Mapandan Catholic School through online platforms. Understanding the prevalence and patterns

of compulsive online purchases in this group is important for several reasons: Mental and

financial health: Compulsive shopping, especially at a young age, can lead to a variety of mental

illnesses, including anxiety and depression. In addition, unchecked spending could pave the way

for future financial challenges. Impact of Digital Advertising: Young individuals are the main

target of digital marketing strategies. Examining their buying habits provides insight into the

effectiveness of these advertising campaigns and their impact on young people. Educational

Implications: Too much time spent in online stores can distract students from education.

Understanding the extent of their buying behavior can inform school policy and strategic

counseling strategies. Social influences: The pressure for social confidence is great, especially in

adolescence. This study can highlight the impact of peer mobility on purchasing behavior and the

subsequent impact on interpersonal relationships. By delving into these practices, this study

hopes to provide valuable insights that can help guide youth to responsible and knowledgeable

use of online resources for parents, educators, and planners.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

According to the study of Jai Prakash (2017), The world of online practically considered as an

endless market. It has always something new in online where it can attract people to buy.

This study of Jai Prakash can be considered to be his observation about e-commerce that lot of

people getting adopted to online shopping platforms and because of its advantage to the

consumer that can choose whatever they like and can buy it with just only a tap. Besides of

advantage there are always a disadvantage first the change of behavior, more focus on online,

spending much of money, buying things that don't really need, and that where our study come up

about the compulsiveness through online shopping platforms

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the book and studies reviewed by the researchers which have some

relation to the present study.

I. Literature

A. Local

A study on the influences of advertisement on consumer buying behavior. Business Studies

Journal, 9

According to Haider and Shakib (2017) investigated the variables that are

the most important in terms of impacting consumers' buying behaviors. Buyers are more

prompted to purchase an item when they see a promotion for it somewhere; they feel secure in

purchasing an item that they have seen.

The personality puzzle: a comprehensive analysis of its impact on three buying behaviors.

According to Sibele and Samuel (2023), Negative emotions lead to the

tendency toward compulsive buying. When Sneath et al. explored the relationship between

consumer emotions and compulsive buying, they found a positive correlation between negative

emotions and compulsive buying behavior. Thus, while the typical impulse buyer makes

occasional spontaneous, unplanned purchases driven, most of the time, by a positive mood,

compulsive buyers may employ impulsiveness and obsessive buying behaviors to cope with and

alleviate their undesirable negative emotions like depression or sad feelings . Compulsive buying

is characterized by excessive shopping and buying ideas that produce distress and damage,

including hard-to-control impulsivity.

How do online shopping platforms shape compulsive buying? A case study of university

students.

According to Luciana and Febriante (2022), The fact that many young

people spend a lot of time every day on their online social networking accounts is claimed to be

a normative part of growing up in the digital age. Although the use of social media is mostly

used for social purposes, there is some evidence to suggest that individuals may feel compelled

to spend a lot of time making a purchase. Excessive use of social media can lead to addiction to

the site.

Understanding Online Impulsive Buying Behaviour of Students.

According to Santinder(2019), marketers have always shown a keen

interest in consumers. They try to understand the way the consumers think, and feel and how

they choose from the different alternatives available to them for example the product, brand,

how and to what extent the consumers are influenced by the peer groups, family, salesperson,

etc. through the knowledge of consumer behaviour.

A Predictive Model on a Consumer’s Impulsive Buying Intention Towards Facebook Live

Online Selling Using Binary Logistic Regression.

Morgan and Trinh (2020) stated that financial literacy will have a positive

and significant relation to savings behavior. The previously stated study by Morgan and Trinh

(2020) shows the effect of the prevention of compulsive buying, allowing for more responsible

spending and frequent saving. Unnecessary purchases can also lead to debt, as a response to

mandatory payments being delayed. The stress amounting from these accumulative debts from

compulsive buying behavior would impair a person majorly in a cognitive aspect.

II. Studies

B. Foreign

The impact of online shopping attributes on customer satisfaction and loyalty: Moderating

effects of e-commerce experience.

According to Albert W. K. Tan (2021), online retailers should strive to

achieve the strongest possible customer loyalty as their goal. As confirmed in the literature, this

is influenced by satisfaction and various quality factors, because of the influence this will lead

others to become compulsive on the product because it is popular and new (Brusch et al.,

Citation2019). Studies continue to examine the impact of various factors on e-commerce

satisfaction and loyalty (Al-dweeri et al., Citation2019; Faraoni et al., Citation2018; Garcia et al.,

Citation2020). Recent studies suggest that, website design can save buyers time, it is easy to use,

it gives you information about the product variety, and deliver the item in the given period of

date, customer become highly satisfied and become loyal buyer (Brusch et al., Citation2019;

Raman, Citation2019). However, the measures of product variety and product delivery are

seldom found in various e-service quality scales in the literature. Despite their significance as

crucial e-commerce factors that influence customer satisfaction and loyalty, product variety and

product delivery are hardly ever measured in the literature (Brusch et al., Citation2019;

Haridasan & Fernando, Citation2018). Ahmad et al. (Citation2017), Brusch et al. (Citation2019),

and Rita et al. (Citation2019) recommend including the variety of available products and

delivery in future studies as key factors that might contribute to building e-loyalty. In closing this

gap, this study builds and tests a conceptual model that examines the influence of information

quality, privacy concerns, perceived security, product variety, and product delivery on online

Consumer shopping Behaviour in Relation to Factors Influencing Impulse Buying: A Case

of Superstores in Karachi Pakistan.

The influence and popularity of the product affect behavior, it attracts the

purchaser to buy even if they don’t really need it and don’t think carefully if the product will

help them or not and whether’s we call of the behavior of being impulsive through online

shopping platforms that nowadays it has a really huge impact to the society and especially to the

students. Jamal and Lodhi (2015) conducted a study in Krachi (Pakistan) to identify the factors

influencing the impulse buying behavior of consumers. Consumers’ impulse buying behavior

was taken as dependent variables internal and external factors were taken as independent

variables. The data was collected from 265 respondents to gather relevant information. Statistical

Packages for the Social Sciences were used to analyze the data. The results predicted that the

internal factors (gender, credit card, and hedonic motivation) and external factors (visual

merchandising, shopping environment, and promotional activities) are related to the impulsive

buying behavior of the consumers. (Satinder Kumar, 2018)

Consumers' Impulsive Buying Behavior in Online Shopping Based on the Influence of

Social Presence

Rook and Fisher (2017) defined impulsive buying behavior as the

description of the thoughts and emotions experienced by consumers in the case of impulsive

buying. This is a kind of purchase behavior that is not controlled by emotion.

of customer engagement, brand loyalty, and customer equity (brand equity, value equity, and

relationship equity). Because of this trend, very catchy brand to look very attractive and a lot of

students are very vulnerable on this situation because nowadays, students don't really think

carefully about what they buy if they love it and very popular they just buy it and spend lot of

money on online, that's why online shopping platforms have been really big impact today.

(Arinta Daniswara , 2023)

Measuring social media impact on Impulse Buying Behavior.

According to Parkash et al, (2022) buying behaviors of consumers have

become a formidable challenge for businesses worldwide. To navigate these changes

successfully, businesses are increasingly turning to Social Networking Sites to attract, connect

with, and engage customers profitably. However, analyzing the influence of social networking

sites on Compulsive Buying Behavior among customers is challenging for businesses and

significant for their sustainability in the market. This influence often leads to spontaneous

purchases while casually scrolling through these platforms, which can be termed as Compulse

buying (Han, 2023). The prevalence of social media has contributed to a rise in impulse buying

behavior (Johan et al.,2023).

The Impact of Impulse Buying and Network Platforms on Consumer Purchasing

Behaviour: A Case Study of a Technical Product.

Consumers’ internal tendencies are the main constraint on compulse

buying behavior, and the weaker the self-control, the easier for compulsive buying behavior to

occur. Traditionally, the influencing factors of compulse buying include external stimuli and the

shopping environment, internal stimuli, scenarios and products, and diverse demographic and

socio-cultural aspects, for which internal stimuli indicate individuals with different personality

characteristics. (Xuan WEN et al. 2019)

Evaluating the potential of interactive media through a new lens: Search versus experience

goods. Journal of Business Research.

According to Klein’s (2017) definition, experience goods are defined as

commodities with chief distinguishing features and a quality that cannot be known until it is

purchased or used, or its information-seeking process is time-consuming and/or more difficult to

achieve than a direct product experience. A search good refers to a commodity for which all

information can be achieved before its purchase. Moreover, according to previous studies,

Traditionally, the compulsive buying tendency includes some attribute values, such as normative

evaluations, purchase intention, self-control, and gender. Moreover, these traits relate to

consumers’ family background and socioeconomic status. In general, as an intrapersonal

tendency without regard to actual demand and its influence on financial expenditures, impulse

buying has profound implications on consumers’ purchasing practices.

The state of online impulse buying research.

The proliferation of e-commerce activities, online impulse buying is now

prevalent among consumers. Shopping online frees consumers from the constraints that they

might experience in physical stores, which in turn increases the likelihood of impulse buying. In

addition to testing the extent to which the dynamics of offline retailing are applicable to the

online environment, research on online impulse buying has tended to emphasize the effects of

website features embedded in shopping websites. (Tommy K.H. Chan et al. 2017)

Synthesis

The review of relevant literature and studies has revealed that the majority of the

studies have been conducted outside of the country. The collection of both local and foreign

studies provides information to the proponents that their proposed study is similar to another

system that is widely used. Most of the studies have focused on consumer buying behavior and

the Factors of compulsive buying satisfaction. The literature reveals that consumers are more

satisfied with using online shopping which can lead to compulsive buying.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the Research Design, Respondents of the study, Sampling

Design, Ethical Consideration, Data Gathering Instrument, and Statistical Tool.

Research Design

This study used a descriptive Research Design because it used a survey questionnaire

to gather the needed data and information from the respondents. This type of research design

aims to systematically obtain information to describe a phenomenon, situation, or population.

The variables are only identified, observed, and measured. It is a collection of quantifiable or

numerical data that can be used for statistical analysis to interpret the research problem.

According to Sevillia(2020), Descriptive Research design describes the condition of the situation

as it exists in the present.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study are the Senior High School students of Mapandan

Catholic School Inc. because they are the implementors of Compulsive Buying Through Online

Platforms. After all, they are one of the scopes of this program. Researchers will only focus on

Senior High School students for researchers are only looking for the extent of implementation of

Compulsive Buying Through Online Platforms in Senior High School. Originally a total of 147

students. However, only 109 students can continue to participate in our study.

15

Sampling Design

The researchers will use the purposive sampling design. Purposive sampling design

is a non-probability sampling method where participants are chosen “on purpose,” not randomly

because we choose who is most relevant to our research question.

According to the study of Steve Campbell, Melanie et.al (2020), the sampling strategies situate

each study in terms of trustworthiness for data collection and analysis. The selected approach to

purposive sampling used in each case aligns with the research methodology, aims, and

objectives.

This sampling design is used to observe the chosen participants in the questionnaires about their

opinions, viewpoints, and habits.

Data Gathering Instruments

In this study, the main instrument used to gather the needed data is the self-

administered survey.

A questionnaire is a list of questions or items used to gather data from respondents

about their attitudes, experiences, or opinions. A questionnaire is a type of survey design that

participants fill out and return to the researcher (Creswell,2012).

A questionnaire is described as a planned list of written questions about a specific topic

that is meant to be sent to several people for a response. Each question has a space designated for

the respondents’ answer.

The questionnaire in this study is composed of variables related to the jurisdiction of

compulsive buying of senior high students of Mapandan Catholic school through online

platforms, in accordance to the student's monthly allowances, students' rights are the concepts

that included. This aims to estimate the compulsive buying in senior high students of

Mapandan Catholic School. We also intend to determine if statistically significant differences

across their profile, and the quality of the product. Compulsive buying is characterized by high

impulsivity scores, novelty seeking, and compulsivity (Black et al., 2012; Di Nicola et al,. 2015;

Munno et al,. 2015).

After the researcher-made questionnaire was validated, the researcher multiplied to

the number of copies sufficient to accommodate all the respondents. At the same time, the letter

of request to the school principal and to the teacher advisers of the senior high students was

prepared.

The letter of request and the copies of the questionnaire were delivered personally by

the researcher to the students concerned. During the delivery of the letter and of the copies

instruments the researcher explained the details to help the respondents accomplish the

questionnaire. The questionnaires were retrieved on the same day when they were answered.

The results of the retrieved copies of the questionnaire were tabulated. Then the data

were analyzed and interpreted through the use of the most appropriate statistical procedures.

Ethical Consideration

In this part of the research, the researchers will explain the ethical considerations that were used.

Ethics came from the word "ethos" which means "characteristic ways of acting according to

Socrates. The researcher's goal is to determine the Compulsive Buying of Senior High School

students of Mapandan Catholic School Inc. Through Online Platforms. As part of the

requirements of Mapandan Catholic School The researchers gave a consent letter explaining the

details and goal of the study to the advisers of the Senior high school students. Before allowing

the respondents to answer the survey, the researchers also informed them and provided them

with clear instructions. The researchers will make sure that participants will receive the highest

level of respect as well as their right to privacy and confidentiality regarding the information

they provide. Fair risk and benefit distribution will be provided to every one of the selected

participants once the study is started.

with a descriptive interpretation of Always(A). The reason why people choose quality product

than brand is to make sure that the product will last in a long period of time, to satisfy customers

and branding is just a name, term, design, symbol or any other feature it doesn't make customers

always feel satisfied by just looking into the brand, according to (Nasser Al-Monawer, Mehdi

Davoodi, Lian Qi, 2021) consumer bases on the quality and pricing decisions of the retailer, and

on the manufacturer's willingness-to-collaborate when the retailer introduces the store brand

product. While " I also find online shopping as a convenient way to shop" had the lowest

weighted mean of 3.0734 with a descriptive interpretation of Often(O), the cause of this is that

online sellers just show and explain the product, how effective it, and useful but it doesn't mean

that the product will come to you just like what the seller did on the video/ads that you watch.

According to the study of (Shuba Srinivasan, Oliver J Rutz, Koen Pauwels, 2016) traditional

marketing such as distribution (60%) and price (20%) are the main drivers of sales variation for

the studied brand, online-owned (10%), (un)earned (3%), and paid (2%) media explain a

substantial part of the path to purchase. It is noteworthy that TV advertising (5%) explains

significantly less than online media in our case. Overall, our study should help strengthen

marketers’ case for building share in consumers’ hearts and minds, as measured through

consumer online activity and engagement.

Recommendation

1. Develop new hobbies. If you use shopping as a stress reliever or a form of entertainment,

try to find a healthier replacement. Like exercising after you do your schoolwork to give

your body a rest and not directly into your phone.

2. Stick to a list. When you must buy into a store or online, make a list of what you need

before you buy it, it makes you limit your shopping and saves money.

3. Get Help. Sometimes, we students deal with our issues alone and there is no shame in

asking for help if you’re finding it hard to hold back your compulsiveness through buying

things or to look at things online.

4. Unsubscribe and block. To hold in compulsive online spending, unsubscribe from

marketing emails, and apps like Lazada, TikTok shop, Shoppee and other online

shopping platforms to put limits on your access to websites where you most commonly

shop.

5. Pay in cash. Give yourself a cash allowance and manage it properly like school

allowance, wants, needs and some extra money keep it so you have savings. You’ll be

much less likely to go on a compulsive spending binge when you have a limited amount

of cash in your wallet.
