The control system is designed to provide safe and functional operation of the boiler

plant both at the boiler and in the engine control room. The communication between the
local control panels, power panels, and engine room PC is achieved through a 2-wire
network.

Local control section

The local control section contains local panel, communication interface, relays, flame
monitoring equipment, water level control equipment, switches for emergency operation.
The local control section is located on the boiler. This provides the operator with a clear
view of the boiler operation.

Automatic mode
The control system automatically start, stops and regulates the burner in normal
operation depending on the steam demand. When the steam pressure is below the set
point for operation, the burner commences the start-up sequence. It will operate in
modulation free mode after start-up. In modulation free mode, the control system
attempts to maintain the steam pressure at the desired set point by regulation of the
burner load. The burner can be regulated through the complete load range from
minimum firing load to full load. However, should the steam demand decrease below
the minimum firing load of the burner, the steam pressure will increase to the set point
for burner stop. The burner stops and remains stopped until the set point for burner
operation is reached again.
The water level control is a modulating system at this type of boiler. The safety device
system for too low water level shut down and burner stop consist of a level float switch
mounted as an external unit. For measuring and control of the water level, the boiler is
equipped with a DP water level transmitter unit, which includes external reference and
variable legs, and a DP transmitter. The continuous 4-20 mA output signal from the DP
transmitter is processed in the control system, which provides level alarms/shut downs
and control of the regulating feed water level.

The differential pressure transmitter converts the detected water level into an analogue
signal (4 – 20 mA) which is transmitted to the control system. The signal can also be
used for remote level indication in the engine control room.
The pneumatic linear actuator is designed to be mounted directly on a control valve.
The pneumatic actuator converts positioning command signals into stem thrust forces.
The required back sitting force is produced by the spring arrangement inside the
actuator. The mode of operation for the actuator depends on how the springs are
inserted when the actuator is assembled.
The pneumatic actuator can be operated as:
 Spring opens valve/air closes valve operation mode
 Air opens valve/spring closes valve operation mode
Level float switch
Level float switch supervise the water level in the boiler. It is installed in a vertical
position and connected to the boiler sockets, provided for this purpose, by means of
shut-off valves.
A float and float rod carry a transmitting magnet which runs in a stainless steel
transmitting tube. The transmitting magnet operates the externally installed magnet
switches. When magnet switches have been triggered, they remain in that position until
trigged again.
The electronic pneumatic positioner is used as the final control element of a pneumatic
linear actuator or a part-turn actuator. The positioner converts a current output signal (4
to 20 mA) from a process controller or control system to a set point value and into a
corresponding movement. The positioner changes the pressure in a pneumatic actuator
chamber or cylinder until the position corresponds to the set point value. The positioner
is mainly used to control an air damper via a pneumatic cylinder (actuator).
Illustration of the salinity system

The salinometer is used in combination with a conductive electrode to measure and

supervise the salinity of feed water. The control device is provided with indication LED’s
for monitoring the salinity level and two LED’s for alarm purpose. The measuring range
as well as the adjustable alarm range is 0 – 100 ppm (sea salt). The alarm limit can be
adjusted by means of the set screw located on the front panel. The alarm limit is
indicated by a flushing LED in the indication LED row. If the salinity level exceeds the
alarm limit the alarm LED’s start flashing.

The compressor starts and stops automatically by operation of pressure switch,
magnetic valve and other necessary electric instruments. Pressure switch is actuated by
pressure in air receiver and gives resultant function to motor, when the pressure in
receiver rises up to the specified upper limit, the contacts of pressure switch open and
stop the motor. On the contrary, when the pressure drops to lower limit, the contacts
close and start the motor.

On the diagram show two Main air compressors 4 and 15, both of them are operate in
auto mode. Then pressure drop to 2,2MPa one of compressor will start automatically
while another compressor operate on stand by mode. In case when air receivers 13 and
14 pressure increases 3.0MPa, the manometer 8 send signal to stop compressor. At
the high mode operation such as manoeuvring situations compressed air consumption
highly increases, stand by compressor will start in case of manometer 10 pressure drop
to 1,9MPa. If the compress air pressure increases to 2,8Mpa, the compressor will stop
in further. Pressure manometers 10 and 11 is responsible to start air compressors by
impulse of 3-way electromagnetic valve 6, which close and stop supply compressed air
to unloading valves 5. When compressor out of operation mode (stop mode) the
electromagnetic valve 6, it open and compressed air delivered to unloading valves while
compressor unloaded and ready to start immediately.
