1 Fostering Effective Relationships

A teacher builds positive and productive relationships with students, parents/guardians, peers and others in the school
and local community to support student learning.

Miss Wild’s concern for the well being of students is readily evident. Through both her words and her
actions, she makes it consistently clear that each student is important to her. Effective relationships in her
classroom is a definite strength that you can notice when you enter her classroom. Expectations for
respectful and learning-focused behavior are taught, using the 7 Habits as her classroom anchor. The
students respond very well to Miss Wild and it is apparent when you observe their interactions that she has
created an environment where the expectation is that the students all treat one another with respect.

Alison’s language with the students is consistently positive, utilizing phrases such as “well done friends”,
“good noticing”, “great work team” and much more. Furthermore, her reinforcement of classroom rules and
procedures is generally focused on recognizing positive behaviour such as “Thank-you for working quietly”
and “Wow, thank-you for putting up your hand”. This positive relationships based management strategy is
essential in building and maintaining positive relationships.

Miss Wild also worked hard to build and maintain positive relationships with parents. She has communicated
regularly through the WMES School App, regularly sharing important learning moments that are happening
in her classroom. She has understood the importance of maintaining positive relationships, and has
attempted to communicate regularly to keep parents in the loop. This has included both seeking out
opportunities for praise, as well as opportunities to involve parents in the support when students are
struggling.

In Alison’s reflection she noted that Fostering Effective Relationships was one of her successes. She states:

“One of my top priorities as an educator has been to build strong relationships with my students. By
intentionally taking the time to get to know each of my students on a personal level, I have been able
to create a safe and supportive classroom environment that allows my students to flourish
academically and emotionally. This classroom culture has helped immensely with classroom
management and routines. As a result, I have noticed that my students are more engaged in their
learning and comfortable asking questions, seeking help, and taking academic risks. The connection I
make with my students also allows them to grow in their leadership skills.”

2 Engaging in Career-Long Learning

A teacher engages in career-long professional learning and ongoing critical reflection to improve teaching and learning.

Miss Wild is a learner who is constantly reflecting and adjusting her course as she discovers her personal
strengths in the profession. She has sought out various resources, feedback, professional development
opportunities and conversations to improve her ability to develop as a new teacher. She has participated in
all of our school and divisional professional development. She accepts the input of others, and after
reflecting on what she feels will work best with her style and students, she works it into her teaching
practice.
Specifically, Alison has been working at developing her skills in the areas of language learning, both in
reading and writing. With our school team she has participated in the following:

● Foundational Literacy with Dr. Deborah Karrah

● 6+1 Writing Traits

Both have involved incorporating new strategies into her teaching practice, allowing Alison to continue to
grow as a teacher.

Miss Wild’s year end reflection, along with her updated teaching portfolio, are a testament to how she
engages in learning. She has demonstrated a strong desire to become the best teacher she is able to, and
looks to continually connect back to the Teaching Quality Standards to celebrate achievement and identify
growth.

3 Demonstrating a Professional Body of Knowledge

A teacher applies a current and comprehensive repertoire of effective planning, instruction, and assessment practices
to meet the learning needs of every student.

Throughout the school year, I have noted a strength in Miss Wild’s planning. Lessons and unit planning are
strong. There is a solid understanding of universal design, helping her students reach the curriculum goals
that she has identified for her lessons and units. Her planning differentiates for all her learners, and
considers assessments, both formative and summative.

Alison has demonstrated a wide variety of teaching pedagogies and practices. It is common to see her grade
3 classes to be involved in a variety of auditory, visual and tactile activities. One such activity occurred when
students, while participating in an introductory lesson in social studies, rotated through various stations to
“notice and wonder”. This activity was highly engaging for students and incorporated conversation,
movement and deeper thinking. These types of activities are found to be more the norm than the exception.

Miss Wild’s classroom has the daily outcomes posted for each of the core subjects. During both formal and
informal observations, Alison has referred students to the “I can statements” to help students in anchoring
their learning. She has demonstrated the use of many types of formative and summative assessments
including many different types of manipulatives. Her students are also often found on whiteboards, and can
be seen with many different colors of sticky notes on their desks and in the teacher's hand. All of this leads
Alison to have a very clear picture of how and where her students are performing against any given
outcome. Alison has noted an area of growth moving forward when it comes to assessment:

“I can also grow by including students in the assessment process and providing increased
opportunities for self-assessment and one on one conferencing to discuss feedback and personal
goals.”
4 Establishing Inclusive Learning Environments
A teacher establishes, promotes and sustains inclusive learning environments where diversity is embraced and every
student is welcomed, cared for, respected and safe.

Miss Wild excels in organization and classroom routines. She has set up a classroom that is organized and
effective. The presence of anchor charts for group work and current habits show the importance of everyone
being part of an effective classroom. Her physical classroom feels like a place where student learning can
excel. Her students understand very defined routines that allow for everyone to achieve their best learning.

In Alison’s reflection she noted:

“Another one of my strengths is that I frequently adjust my teaching practices and continue to modify
my lessons/activities to meet the diverse needs of my students. In doing so, I have been able to
create a responsive and inclusive learning environment. I am always trying new things in my
classroom to improve my practice and I respond to feedback from my students to help enhance my
lessons and make them more relevant and engaging. Through my experience working in Grade 3 last
year, I have gained valuable insight into things that work and things that do not, allowing me to make
informed decisions moving forward. Since there are different classroom dynamics each year, it is so
important to approach activities with a flexible mindset. “

Another strength has been Miss Wild’s commitment to helping her students learn and practice the 7 Habits. Her
students are able to share their classroom mission, and strive to live by the tenants that they created at the beginning
of the year.

5 Applying Foundational Knowledge about First Nations, Métis and Inuit

A teacher develops and applies foundational knowledge about First Nations, Métis and Inuit for the benefit of all
students.

As a beginning teacher in her first few years of teaching, Miss Wild has worked to develop her own
foundational knowledge in this domain. Her portfolio has highlighted the many learning opportunities she
has led her class through during the school year. these have included:
● Comparing and connecting the habit of “sharpening the saw” with the indigenous understanding
around a medicine wheel
● Celebrating Metis and Rock Your Mocs week and connecting with the idea of appreciation and
celebrating diversity
● Orange Shirt Day activities including creating a kindness chain and the importance of standing up for
others
● Regularly using a sharing circle to help build a strong and respectful classroom community
6 Adhering to Legal Frameworks and Policies
A teacher demonstrates an understanding of and adherence to the legal frameworks and policies that provide the
foundations for the Alberta education system.

Miss Wild has met the expectations laid out by the school, district and Alberta education. She has been
engaged in the operations of the school, playing a meaningful role in development and alignment of school
culture and values.
