National Monument is a 132 meter (433 ft) high memorial monument located right
in the middle of Medan Merdeka Square, Central Jakarta. Monas was established to
commemorate the resistance and struggle of the Indonesian people in gaining
independence from the colonial government of the Dutch Empire. Construction
began on August 17, 1961 under the order of President Soekarno and was
inaugurated until it was opened to the public on July 12, 1975. This monument is
crowned with a flame covered with gold leaf which symbolizes the burning fighting
spirit of the Indonesian people.
After the central government of the Republic of Indonesia returned to Jakarta after
previously being headquartered in Yogyakarta in 1950 following the recognition of
the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia by the Dutch government in 1949,
President Sukarno began to think about building a national monument equivalent to
the Eiffel Tower on the square in front of the Merdeka Palace. The construction of
the National Monument monument aims to commemorate and preserve the struggle
of the Indonesian nation during the 1945 independence revolution, so that it
continues to inspire the inspiration and spirit of patriotism for current and future
generations. At the top of the monument is a golden flame called the Flame of
Independence. This golden flame is 14 meters high and is made of 14.5 tonnes of
bronze plated with 50kg of gold. You can see the platform at a height of 115 meters
by lift on the south side of the structure. Binoculars are provided to enjoy the view of
Jakarta. A ticket to Monas to see the platform is Rp. 7,500.
At the base part of the tower with the size of 80 x 80 meters. Everyone can visit the
museum to learn the history of Indonesia. There is also an amphitheater in this
building called Ruang Kemerdekaan, it is located in the "cup" part of Monas and it
can be reached by using spiral stairs at the north and south doors. If you go to the
