PLUMBING

Definition

- Plumbing is a system of pipes and fixtures installed in a building for the distribution and use
of potable (drinkable) water and the removal of water borne waste. It is usually distinguished
from water and sewage systems that serve a group of building or a city.

Introduction

Brief History of Plumbing

Water is a necessary component of life, and plumbing has been crucial to the development
of civilizations. The creation of functional plumbing systems has been a challenge for every
civilization whose population has been concentrated in cities and towns. Human excrement was
frequently carried out of towns in carts or buckets, or it was dumped into a open ditch system
that was filled with water and led to a lake or stream.

Ancient civilizations such as the Greek, Roman, Persian, Indian, and Chinese are the ones
that invented plumbing. As these cities grew, they each devised methods for supplying portable
water, public restrooms, wastewater removal, and irrigation for their crops.

PARTS OF PLUMBING

• Pipes and Fittings

Pipes make up a plumbing system; they carry clean water from a well or the main city line to
designated areas. Unclean water is transported to city sewers by drain pipes. Pipes can be
connected by fittings, which vary the angle and use of the line. The majority of systems consist
of two sets of fittings and pipes: one for hot water and one for cold water. Lead, PVC, brass, and
copper are examples of common materials.

• Fixtures

The water that is carried by pipes throughout your building needs a place to go. Here's
where the fixtures come into play. The term "fixtures" refers to any water-using appliances in
your building, including washing machines, dishwashers, water heaters, baths and showers, and
bathroom and kitchen sinks. Certain fixtures use water only when necessary, while others pull
water from the pipes when a button is turned or pressed.
• Drainages

Without a drainage system, a building can quickly flood due to excess water and liquid
waste. Proper drain care is crucial to prevent clogs and prevent overflowing gutters. Regular
plumbing maintenance, such as cleaning with drain cleaning products, can prevent issues. Using
a clogged drain can be a significant problem, so it's essential to maintain proper drainage
systems to prevent flooding.

PERSON'S INVOLVED IN PLUMBING

PLUMBER

Plumbers install and connect pipes, fixtures, and appliances, interpreting blueprints and
building codes to plan and execute installations. They diagnose and troubleshoot issues, often
collaborating with architects and construction teams to ensure seamless integration into
building projects.

WHAT DO PLUMBERS DO ?

A plumber specializes in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems.

Plumbing systems consist of pipes, fixtures, and appliances that facilitate the distribution of
water, gas, and waste disposal in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Plumbers are
responsible for ensuring the proper functioning and efficiency of these systems, allowing for
clean water supply, effective drainage, and the overall health and safety of occupants.

TYPES OF PLUMBERS

• Residential Plumbers
• Service and Repair Plumbers
• Commercial Plumbers
• Industrial Plumbers
• Construction Plumbers
• Green Plumbers

IMPORTANCE OF WELDING IN OUR INDUSTRY

Plumber's and the plumbing sector help us save water by utilizing the technology and water
management. They try to make sure there is always enough water to go around. They also play
a significant role in implementing measures such as rainwater collecting, desalination, waste
water treatment and water reuse.
REASONS WHY PLUMBING IS IMPORTANT:

• Water is not man's enemy.

• Plumbing provides comfort and convenience.
• Plumbing saves energy.
• Plumbing saves money.
• Plumbing has helped with preventing diseases.

HOW DOES PLUMBING WORK ?

Water distribution systems in cities are typically forced through pumps, with some
exceptions where gravity can distribute water through elevated storage tanks. The pressure and
friction generated by water flow through pipes limit water distribution height and flow rate. A
building's waste disposal system consists of a drainage and venting system, with the drainage
system connecting to the sewage system and the venting system protecting sanitary traps from
siphoning. The most common sanitary trap is a U bend, which retains waste water discharged by
fixtures, separating them from open drainpipes.
