NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES
LEADING TO OBESITY AND
ANOREXIA

PRESENTED BY: AQSA NASIR ROLL NO 49

WHAT IS NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY?

Nutritional deficiencies are the lack of adequate amounts of essential nutrients, such as vitamins,
minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids, in the diet

it can occur due to insufficient food intake or poor quality of food.

Nutritional deficeincies can lead to many health issues. Today we are
going to discuss obesity and anorexia.

Obesity is a condition of excess body

fat Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by
that increases the risk of various chronic diseases, an abnormally low body weight, an intense fear of
such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and gaining weight, and a distorted body image.
cancer.
OBESITY

Obesity can also result from nutritional deficiencies, especially of micronutrients,

such as vitamins and minerals.
Micronutrients are involved in regulating appetite, energy expenditure, glucose metabolism, and
inflammation. A lack of micronutrients can impair these processes and lead to increased hunger,
reduced satiety, impaired insulin sensitivity, and chronic low-grade inflammation.
These factors can promotes weight gain and obesity

micronutrients that are associated with obesity are vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, iodine,
selenium, and chromium
vitamin D deficiency can reduce the expression of leptin, a hormone that suppresses appetite
and increases energy expenditure. Calcium deficiency can increase the production of
parathyroid hormone, which stimulates fat accumulation and inhibits fat breakdown

the fat accumulates in the body and leads to obesity moreover due to excess
appetite the food intake is incresed and is not able to digested and excreted which
leads to obesity
ANOREXIA

Anorexia nervosa can also result from nutritional deficiencies, especially of macronutrients, such as
carbohydrates, protein, and fat
People with anorexia may restrict their eating habits and intake less food, exessive exercise ,binge eating which
may lead to weight loss (excessive)
macronutrients that are associated with anorexia nervosa are carbohydrates, protein, and essential fatty
acids. A deficiency of these macronutrients can affect the function of neurotransmitters, hormones, and
membranes that are involved in mood, cognition, appetite, and body image. For instance, carbohydrate
deficiency can reduce the availability of glucose, the main fuel for the brain.
deficiency of these macro nutrients may cause severe starvation which can result in damge to many
organs such as brain, heart, kidney ,liver etc
