Food is an integral part of
your daily life. It supplies the
nourishment that you need
for you to perform your daily
tasks. Nutrients are
substances that provide
nourishment needed for
growth and maintenance of
life.

Malnutrition
-happens when the body contains
insufficient, excessive, or imbalanced
consumption of nutrients.
There are two types of malnutrition:
• Undernutrition
• overnutrition
Undernutrition
-happens when the body is lacking in
essential nutrients that are necessary
for the growth and maintenance of
life.
Signs of undernutrition
include:
• Dizzines • Bleeding and
• Irritability swelling of gums
• Loss of reflexes • Scaling and
and coordination cracking of lips
• Loss of body fats and mouth
and muscles
• Poor memory
Overnutrition
-happens when a person’s diet
provides far too many nutrients for the
body to cope with. In some cases,
overnutrition is caused by excessive
supplement intake.
Signs of overnutrition
include:
• Obesity • Difficulty in
• Diseases such as walking and
cancer, diabetes moving around
and heart attack • Hair loss
• Bleeding in
certain areas of
body
Causes of Malnutrition
• Poor Diet
• Illnesses and Medical Conditions
• Mental Health Problems
• Physical Factors
• Protein Energy Malnutrition
• Micro Nutrient Definciencies
“Marasmus”
-occurs when there is a severe
deficiency of essential nutrients such as
protein and carbohydrates.
“Kwashiorkor”
-also called wet protein energy
malnutrition. It occurs as a result of an
extreme protein deficiency in the
body.
Vitamins
-these are organic nutrients that are
mainly obtained from the food you
ear. Although vitamins are only
required in minimal intake, they must
still be considered in promoting good
health and determining proper
nutrition.
