ABSTRACT

Sleep is an important factor to our health, and with subliminal sounds, it

may help with sleep quality of the students. The research aims to determine the

sleep quality of those without sleep subliminal and those with. Aside from the

whole, the study also aims to see the sleep quality of those with medical

illnesses, caffeine intake, and sleep troubles. The researchers incorporated the

data from sleeping and subliminal sound to guide the paper in testing the

hypothesis. Google form was utilized to track and assess the sleep quality of

the participants before and after listening to the subliminal audio provided,

during the whole implementation period. Based on the results of the study, it

was found that sleeping with subliminal sounds has a minimal yet a positive

result. Also sharing the same results, respondents with caffeine intake sleep

less than those without caffeine intake. Next is the results of medical illnesses

and its effect on sleep quality. There is a significant difference, with

respondents without medical problems sleeping better than those with. Finally,

having trouble sleeping. Again, those without trouble sleeping has better sleep

quality than those with it. The results of the study can be expected, with

subliminal sounds that is sound-inducing for sleep quality. The study shows

that sleep subliminal sounds have a minimal yet positive effect on the sleep

quality of the respondents, this may lead to the idea that using and listening to

sleep subliminal will help you get better sleep and higher sleep quality. Also,

there are other factors discussed in the study. Separating caffeine intake,
vi

medical illnesses, and trouble with sleeping. IT shows that caffeine intake

lowers the time of sleep for those who intake caffeine before going to bed.

Those with medical illnesses can be expected to have lower sleep quality,

which is the case in study. Also with trouble of sleeping, as the name indicates,

trouble with sleeping hinders the sleep quality of the respondents whom

experience sleep troubles or problems

SECTION 1

Introduction

As part of our daily life, most of us experience a chaotic and exhausting

day from our different responsibilities and duties. At the end of the day, the best

way to rest and recharge ourselves is through sleeping in order for our

physical, mental, and emotional well-being to be properly functioning. Sleeping

is as essential to our daily needs as food and water. Although we may feel that

sleep simply rests our tired bodies, our brain remains active throughout the

night. Sleep plays a critical role in the brain as well as physical functioning.

There are several factors that involve sleeping, the bedroom environment can

have a significant influence on sleep quality and quantity. Several variables

combine to make up the sleep environment, including light, noise, and

temperature. By being attuned to factors in your sleep environment that put you

at ease, and eliminating those that may cause stress or distraction, you can set

yourself up for the best possible sleep.

How much sleep someone needs depends on their age. According to

the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, they recommended that children

aged 6–12 years should regularly sleep 9–12 hours per 24 hours, and

teenagers aged 13–18 years should sleep 8–10 hours per 24 hours. But what

happens when you don’t get enough sleep? If you don't get enough sleep it has

a negative impact on your health and it is classified as a short-term and long-

term problem. Short-term problems include lack of alertness, excessive

2

daytime sleepiness, impaired memory, relationship stress, quality of life, and a

greater likelihood of car accidents because of drowsy driving. Long-term

problems include high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure, or

stroke. Other potential problems include obesity, depression, impairment in

immunity, and lower sex drive.

In this study, the researchers aim to develop an in-depth understanding of

the effectiveness of subliminal sound on the sleep quality of the selected senior

high school students of Benedictine Institute of Learning. Most people used

subliminal sounds which are an auditory stimuli that the conscious mind cannot

perceive, often inserted into other media such as TV commercials or songs.

This kind of messaging can be used to strengthen or heighten the

persuasiveness of advertisements, or to convey an altogether different

message entirely. Subliminal messages affect the subconscious mind. We're

talking visual messages that can be flashed very quickly in a film or buried

within a print image and audio messages that are masked by other sounds,

played below audible levels, or recorded backward to hide the message.

According to the study of Loyd, “Subliminal audio during sleep is popular

because it doesn't impose on your productive waking time. With no effort, you

can turn your 6-8 hours of sleep time into a personal growth period. It's far

easier to take advantage of 1/3 of your day sleeping to eliminate your most

challenging issues and replace bad code with good.” (Loyd, 2015).
3

Assumptions

The research paper aims to determine the effectiveness of subliminal

sound on the sleep quality of the high school students of Benedictine Institute

of Learning school year 2021-2022. The researchers expect that the following

assumptions of this paper will be upheld and be used for the betterment of the

community in the area of sleep. In addition, The researchers expect

respondents to coordinate, be truthful, and be compliant.

The researchers have constructed the following assumptions in correlation with

the study:

1. Going to bed whilst listening to subliminal sounds improved the sleep

quality of the participants.

2. Going to bed whilst listening to subliminal sounds does not improve the

sleep quality of the participants.

3. Participants sleeping without subliminal sound have better sleep quality

than those who sleep with subliminal sound.

Ethical Principles

The study aims to have the following ethical principles: (1) Autonomy (2)

Beneficence and (3) Justice. The researchers opted to do good and take

positive courses of action to make participants have their welfare.

4

Autonomy. The researchers respect the students’ decision whether to

participate in this study therefore this paper ethically considers autonomy.

Participants have the right to choose the data that they want to offer and with

that, the decision comes to their own volition.

Beneficence. It is also considered in the study where researchers act

for the benefit of the research participants as well as the readers. The

researchers are opted to do good and take positive courses of action to make

participants have their welfare.

Justice. The researchers will distribute the benefits and burdens of the

research project fairly. Researchers ensure that the means used to select

research participants are equitable. The researchers must neither exploit the

vulnerable nor exclude without good reason those who stand to benefit from

study participation.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Problem and Significance

The goal of the research project is to determine the effectiveness of

subliminal sound on the sleep quality of Benedictine Institute of Learning high

school students in the school year 2021-2022. People's sleep disorders are a

common impediment to the research project that will be carried out. Sleep

deprivation has a wide range of negative consequences for the human body

and its circadian rhythm. According to Alharbi, Alotaibi, Almalki, Althekri, and
5

Alshadokhi (2017), a lack of sleep limits a person's ability to think and solve

problems effectively, which means that people who wake up for an extended

period of time influence them to learn at an effective level.

Approach and Methodology

This study will examine the effect of subliminal sound on the sleep

quality of Benedictine Institute of Learning high school students during the

school year 2021-2022. To guide the paper in testing the hypothesis, the

researchers will first incorporate data from sleeping and subliminal sound.

Cleveland Clinic (2021) stated that sleep cycles are part of our internal

biological clocks, the regularly occurring patterns of brain waves that occur

while we sleep. The average sleep cycle is 90 minutes long, and you require

four to six cycles of sleep every 24 hours.

Table 1
Age Range and Recommended Hours of Sleep

65 years or more 7-8 hours

Because there is currently a pandemic, researchers are limited to

conducting the study remotely from their homes. However, there are existing

resources that allow researchers to move forward with this concept.

Researchers can access a wide range of factual information online by using

devices such as computers, laptops, smartphones, as well as the internet and

any data provider.

For preliminary data, researchers will gather relevant literature for

reference and topic guidance. Furthermore, recommendations and future

improvements stated in the literature will be considered for a more complete

understanding and findings. This paper's intended audience consists of

Benedictine Institute of Learning's selected high school students. The

researchers will use convenience sampling, a type of non-probability sampling

in which participants are chosen because they are a convenient source of data.

Impacts and Outcomes

The effectiveness of subliminal sound on sleep quality is expected to

improve the quality of sleep of high school students. Subliminal sound is

frequently thought to be seamless as the term implicates because its effects

typically disappear within a second. In that case, we expected that our project

would be successful. The following are the impacts of our project in our society.

(1) It will strengthen a person's motivation and change their current mood. (2) It
7

will improve the rational decision-making of high school students. (3) It will

improve the mental health condition of the high school participants. (4) The

findings, subliminal sound improve the sleep quality of students, will be another

avenue for coping with sleep (5) The study can be further used for future

research to make improvements.

Project Team

Research Project Leader. The research project leader will be

responsible in leading the whole research project, reviewing the work,

validating the data collected, creating reports and communicating with

the other researchers in the team.

Research Members. The other members of the group will be working

on the various sections of the project. This includes the completion of

individual parts and contribution on the overall project objectives.

Research Project Stakeholders. This research project do not have any

stakeholders since the researchers will not create or use any product

that needs funding.

Key Collaborators. The selected high school students will be the key

collaborators for this project. The researchers will need the active

participation of the participants in the making of the research project.

Research Advisers. The advisers will guide the researchers during the

making of the research project.

8

Budget and Timeline

Using subliminal sounds, the researchers expect that it will have a

positive effect on the sleep of the selected students. The research project will

require no budget. It requires none since this research will not require any paid

materials or services. It will be done solely by using subliminal sounds which

are considered free in different media platforms like YouTube, Spotify, or

downloaded media.

The target audience, high school students of Benedictine Institute of

Learning, will undergo an experiment, using subliminal sounds to see if the

audio has an effect on their sleep quality. It is expected that using these sounds

will help the respondents’ sleep cycle to be stable and complete.

The project will take a minimum of two (2) weeks to complete and gather

the current sleep quality of the participants. After gathering the current sleep

quality of the participants, researchers will equally allocate another two (2)

weeks for implementing the subliminal sound before and during sleeping. The

project will be completely monitored online and using the participants’

cooperation to gather said data in the span of four (4) weeks.

March 1, 2022, the researchers started to compose the topic and title for

the study, and on March 9, 2022, the researchers completed the introduction
9

up to the project description. Once again, requiring no budget to be used to

complete said work.

Sleep is necessary for the learning process to occur. People who wake

up for long periods of time have an impact on their ability to learn successfully

since sleep deprivation affects a person's ability to think and solve problems

quickly. Sleep deprivation affects your ability to think and can limit your ability to

comprehend events, making it more difficult to respond appropriately to

situations that need rational decision-making. According to Alharbi et al. (2017),

there is a link between the number of hours of sleep and the satisfaction of the

sample members from sleep, as well as a link between sleep satisfaction and

exhaustion, difficulties concentrating, and chronic disease suffering.

11

According to Karam, Haidar, Khawaja, and Laziki (2017), when people

listen to a subliminal sound, CD, or tape, the conscious mind will be asleep and

only the subconscious mind will be awake; as a result, it will receive orders,

inputs, and suggestions without being interrupted by the conscious mind.

As stated by the Cleveland Clinic (2020), a lack of adequate or high-

quality sleep causes more than just tiredness. Sleepiness reduces cognitive

function, which can lead to learning disabilities in children, memory loss in

adults, personality changes, and depression. People who lack sleep have

difficulty making decisions, are irritable, perform poorly, and have slower

reaction times, putting them at risk for car and work-related accidents. Sleep

deprivation can also harm one's health by contributing to the development of

obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Caffeine consumption caused a three to

five hour loss of sleep, and having a television in the bedroom caused a two

hour loss of sleep each week in children.

The study found that poor sleep habits were linked to higher levels of

depression, anxiety, and stress in medical students. Despite this, students with

poor sleep habits outperformed students with better sleep habits in terms of

academic performance. Medical students should understand the significance of

sleep and how it affects their mental health (Al-Khani, A.M., Ewid, M., Sarhandi,

M.I. Saquib, N., Zaghloul, M.S., 2019).

Sleep is essential for your mental and physical health. Different

processes that occur during sleep contribute to healthy brain activity and
12

overall health. Sleep is also essential for proper growth and development in

children and teenagers. Sleep deprivation can disrupt these bodily functions.

The inability to get enough high-quality sleep is referred to as "sleep

deficiency." This could be due to sleep deprivation or simply not getting enough

sleep, or it could be due to something else, such as a sleep disorder or a

misaligned circadian rhythm. When you don't get enough quality sleep, your

body has less time to recover during the night. This can also reduce your

body's resistance to diseases and medical conditions (Pacheco, D., 2022).

Subliminal signals are successful, according to Loyd (2021). "Subliminal

audio is popular since it does not interfere with your productive waking hours.

You may change your 6-8 hours of sleep time into a personal growth period

with little effort "According to Loyd. Silent subliminal messages are messages

captured outside of one's conscious awareness and without the addition of

dubbed music or nature sounds. Subliminal messages bypass the conscious

mind, allowing you to sleep longer. Subliminal recordings allow excellent code

to enter and pass through the conscious mind, where it is prevented and

filtered. It can help someone not only obtain more sleep, but also change poor

habits into healthy ones.

Caffeine is one of the most popular stimulants in the world. Caffeine has

been shown to improve performance, but it can also have negative

consequences, such as performance deficits and social problems. Scholars

dispute whether caffeine's alleged psychoactive benefits are actually a net

13

benefit of caffeine consumption. We have researched the relationship between

caffeine consumption and quality and quantity of nighttime sleep in an

integrative review. Second, we look at the evidence to see if sleep deprivation

results in performance deficits that can be reversed by caffeine consumption

the next day. Caffeine can have a variety of positive effects on both physical

and cognitive functioning. Caffeine has some advantages that make it likely to

be used as a performance-enhancing substance, despite the difficulty of

ensuring adequate sleep (Muurlink, O., O’Callaghan, F., Reid, N., 2018).

The study discovered that caffeine consumption six hours before

bedtime could reduce sleep time by one hour. Furthermore, study participants

reported sleeping problems when they consumed caffeine 0-3 hours before

bed, but they were unaware that their sleep was also disrupted when they

consumed caffeine six hours before bed. If you have trouble sleeping, try

limiting your caffeine intake six hours before bed. Caffeine can have an effect

on the onset of sleep and reduce sleep time, efficiency, and satisfaction.

Caffeine-induced sleep problems may also be more prevalent in older adults.

Caffeine significantly shortens the time spent in slow-wave sleep, which is the

deep, restful sleep that leaves us feeling refreshed and alert in the morning.

Caffeine-interrupted sleep can result in sleep deprivation the next day, resulting

in fatigue and difficulties with learning, memory, problem-solving, and emotion

regulation (Pacheco, D., 2022).

14

Drerup (2021), a psychiatrist and sleep disorder specialist, believes that

the more sleep you need as a child, the less sleep you need as an adult. Sleep

is also said to be beneficial to your physical, mental, and emotional health.

While you sleep, your body may rest and rejuvenate, and these restorative

capabilities can even be seen at the molecular level. Boosting the immune

system, increasing emotional processing, stress reduction, recalling

information, improving cellular growth, mending tissue, and muscle

regeneration, and improving exercise capacity are just a few of the many

benefits of sleep.

"Whether you use a program like Sleep Cycle to track your sleep or a

conventional alarm clock, we all go through similar sleep stage patterns

throughout the night," Brantner (2019). According to Brantner, there are 5

stages of sleep. The first one is called the light stage sleep which is the

shortest, it lasts only for five to ten minutes, this stage is also where people are

easiest to wake up. The second is still also referred as light sleep however it is

believed that most of our memories are formed during this stage. The third and

fourth stages are called the slow wave sleep where muscles of one's body

become fully relaxed which makes them become much more difficult to wake

up. The fifth or last stage is where the body enters the REM phase. During

REM sleep, heart rate and blood pressure increase, while breathing can

become irregular, fast, and shallow. Learning about the body’s stages of sleep
15

can help some individuals understand their own and make appropriate changes

to their sleep habits in order to allow for the optimal amount of sleep cycles.

Relevant Local Literature

Taking care of our sleep quality and sleep cycle, in general, is crucial to

our overall health especially physically and mentally. Sleep affects our health,

learning, and memory which shows how poor sleep will be detrimental to our

overall health, which can affect our academic performance. Having good sleep,

using different tools but especially subliminal sounds may improve sleep quality

which in turn will improve our health, and also our academics. (Jorge II,

Villalobos, Nuñal, 2020)

Increased level of sleepiness does not correlate with poorer academic

performance among these medical students, despite them sleeping less than

the general recommendation for adults. The study is limited however by the use

of the GWA as the sole tool to measure academic performance, which is

affected by many other factors. We recommend the performance of this study

in a broader population and use more validated tools to measure sleepiness

and academic performance. (Peter et al., 2020)

Many factors may impact our sleep quality. Lack of sleep contributes to

negative and declining health, which shows how important having good sleep

is, and also, undergoing through stress may alter our sleep cycle negatively.

According to the Sleep Foundation’s Dr. Anis Rehman and Danielle Pacheco,

sleep problems are conditions that affect an individual’s quality of sleep, the
16

time or duration spent asleep, and the individual’s capacity to function when

they are awake. Using subliminal sounds, the searches aim to diminish poor

sleep quality. Poor sleep quality is often associated with difficulty getting

enough sleep, sleeping at the wrong time of day, the inability to sleep properly,

and, most commonly, a lack of sleep altogether.

A Descriptive Study on the Sleeping Habits and Correlation of

Sleepiness with Academic Performance in States University-run Medical

School In the Philippines found that the percentage of Filipino medical students

experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness (53.3%) is greater than medical

students based in Malaysia (35.5%), Pakistan (39.5%), and Saudi Arabia

(37.8%). The study is valuable for its focus on a specific community, whose

members–medical students and residents–report chronic partial loss of sleep

as a common experience, while those in more physically demanding

specialities can suffer total loss of sleep. Other studies focusing on more

vulnerable communities, such as business process outsourcing (BPO) and call

center workers, and women factory workers in the Philippines expand the study

of sleep, its vital importance to quality of life, and the role it plays in overall

health. (Ballesteros, Dela Peña, Huelgas, 2021).

Night shift workers may have a disrupted circadian rhythm, which may

contribute to the development of skin disease. The purpose of this study was to

determine whether there is a significant difference in the prevalence and

severity of self-reported skin disease between “regular” day shift workers

17

compared to “graveyard” night shift workers. We conducted surveys from 630

call center agents in Manila, the Philippines, and they were analyzed regarding

demographics, medical history, dermatologic history, lifestyle, and sleep. No

difference was found in the prevalence of skin disease between shifts.

However, night shift workers were worse sleepers. When compared to good

sleepers, poor sleepers had a higher prevalence of skin disease with worse

severity. Graveyard shift workers with poor sleep may have increased skin

disease severity (Lu, Suggs, Ezaldein, Ya, Fu, Jamora, Verallo-Rowel, and

Baron, 2019). The human body follows our circadian rhythm, disruption or

noise in the media will affect our bodies in a negative way, especially on our

sleep or sleep quality. Concluded in the study, night shift workers are worse off

in their sleep quality compared to day shift workers. There are several factors

that may affect sleep but using subliminal sounds may help and overcome

those negative factors.

This study revealed that the fear of COVID‐19 is common among

nursing students but is more evident in the first year of the program. Although

students' fear is correlated to their willingness and preparedness to care for

patients with COVID‐19, the willingness factor predicts their fear of the virus.

We also conclude that the students' fear of COVID‐19 predicts their

psychological disposition of increased irritability, poor sleep quality, and

intention to quit nursing school. (De Los Santos, PHD, MAN, RN, Labrague,

PhD, DM, CHSE, CNE, and Falguera, MAN, RN, 2021). The spread of COVID-
18

19 has affected the overall health of the people directly or indirectly, mental or

physical. Among the many effects, these disturbances caused by the virus and

its pandemic have severely affected the lives of fellow people. Furthermore,

due to the said mental and physical effects, people and fellow students have

had their sleep cycle affected in a negative way.

As cited in The Filipino Times (2019), a survey conducted by Sleep

Cycle puts the Philippines 4th in sleep deprivation around the world. “The lack

of sleep or sleep deprivation may sabotage one’s mental and physical health at

risk causing short-term and long-term memory problems, mood swings, anxiety

and depression, inability to focus, weight gain, and others”. Improving one’s

sleep quality is extremely important to the overall well-being of our health. This

proves that the research project would be beneficial since the goal of this study

is to improve sleep quality. Using subliminal sounds, we aim to have a positive

impact on the sleep deprivation of the respondents.

Methods

Participant. High School students from Benedictine Institute of Learning

are the participants in this experiment. The participants in this study were

chosen by the researchers because, because this study will use convenience

sampling, it will be up to the researchers to choose who will participate in the

given survey or interview. The students will be given a Google form with

questions about their permission to participate in the study by the researchers.

19

If the students want to participate in the study and the researchers choose

them, they will be added to a group chat in Facebook Messenger, which will

serve as a platform for the researchers to monitor the participants.

Design. This is a quantitative study with an experimental design. The

subliminal sound is the study's independent variable, and its goal is to improve

sleep quality. Subliminal Sounds are sounds that are used in the study because

using this type of tool may improve the participants' sleep quality. The

researchers are using these to see if it improves sleep quality. The main issue

addressed by the study is poor sleep quality. Participants are instructed to

listen to subliminal sounds and record their sleep and waking times in a Google

form. Furthermore, the researchers are measuring the participants' sleep

quality as the dependent variable. Sleep quality refers to how well one sleeps,

whether it is a full night's rest or peaceful sleep. The researchers would test

and see how subliminal sounds could be manipulated to improve the

participants' sleep quality. The researchers are attempting to measure the

dependent variable, and they hope to see if the subliminal sound has a positive

impact on the participants' sleep quality through collaboration with the

participants. The dependent variable, or sleep quality, is measured by one's

ability to fall asleep while also improving sleep quality.

Materials. Research participants will come from the high school

students of Benedictine Institute of Learning. They will be selected through the

means of convenience sampling and the target is to have 50 participants. The

20

participants will be approached by the researchers via Google Forms, an

online surveying tool. After the participants completed the Google Forms, the

researchers will orient them on how the flow of the study will proceed. In order

to interact with the participants the researchers will use the following: (1) Social

Media Application e.g. Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (2) Google

form for selecting participants (3) Google form for logging the timestamps of

their sleep (4) And lastly, subliminal audio files. The participants will then be

instructed to listen to an audio file that contains subliminal sounds. The audio

file will be lengthy because the study will be remotely conducted, therefore

researchers cannot directly record factors such as how long till the participants

are able to sleep when listening to subliminal sounds.

Procedure. This research project mainly focuses on how subliminal

sounds can affect the selected students’ sleep quality. The researchers began

doing the first part of this project or section 1 on the first week of March 2022.

This part includes the Introduction, Assumptions, Ethical Principles, Project

Description, Relevant Literatures, and the Methods. The next part that the

researchers will focus on is the implementation and data gathering.

The estimated duration for the implementation is four (4) weeks. For the

first two (2) weeks, the researchers will provide a google form to the

participants which will serve as their sleep log, the participants will then input

the timestamps of the estimated time they fell asleep and woke up. After that,

the researchers will provide a subliminal audio file for the participants to listen
21

to, and a google form to again track their total sleeping time or duration.

Afterward, the data gathered during the four (4) weeks of implementation will

be analyzed and prove whether the subliminal sounds do really have an effect

on the sleeping quality of the research participants.

Section II

Results

The data presented in the results are the demographics and the

responses from the daily time stamp google form provided by the researchers

to the participants. The demographics show data about the participant such the

age, gender, medical illness/ diseases /issues (MIDI), caffeinated drink intake,

and sleeping problems. Whereas in the main research findings for this study,

shows a comparison between the sleep quality without subliminal sound and

with subliminal sound. As the study aims to determine the effectiveness of the

subliminal sleep quality, the data will also be crossed in reference to the

participants' demographics.

Demographics of the Research Participants

22

The research participants for this study is the high school students of

Benedictine Institute of Learning. They have been selected through the consent

form provided. In total, there are 41 students that have been selected to

participate, however, due to some unresponsive participants, it has been

reduced to a total of 39 students.

or 35.90% of the respondents are teenagers waged 16. Fifteen (15) out of 39

participants, or 38.46% of the respondents are teenagers aged 17 years old.

Eight (8) out of 39 participants, or 20.51% of the respondents are teenagers

aged 18. While, 2 out of 39 participants, or 5.13% of the respondents are

teenagers aged 19.

All of the participants are within the range of their teenage years.

Cleveland Clinic (2021) stated that sleep cycles are part of our internal

biological clocks, the regularly occurring patterns of brain waves which occur

while we sleep. The average sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and you need
23

four to six cycles of sleep every 24 hours. And for ages 13 to 18, they

recommended of 8 to 10 hours sleep whilst for ages 19 is suggested to have 7

to 9 hours of sleep.

or 64.10% of the respondents are females. While, 14 out of 39 participants, or

35.90% of the respondents are males. This implies that more than half of the

research participants are Females. However, males are not completely behind

for they make up almost 40.00% of the research participants.

of 39 participants, or 12.82% of the respondents has MIDI. While, 34 out of 39

participants, or 87.18% of the respondents didn’t any MIDI.

Almost one-eight of the research participants have MIDI while the rest of

the population have none. Sleep-related processes all contribute to healthy

brain activity and overall health. Sleep is also necessary for children and

teenagers' proper growth and development. These bodily functions can be

disrupted by a lack of sleep. When you don't get enough quality sleep, your

body doesn't have as much time to recover during the night. This can also

lower your resistance to diseases and medical conditions (Pacheco, 2022).

intake. More than half of those who filled out the questionnaire for

demographics have caffeine intake. Caffeine is one of the world's most popular

stimulants. Caffeine has been shown to improve performance, but it can also

have negative side effects like performance deficits and social problems.

Scholars debate whether the alleged psychoactive benefits of caffeine are a net

benefit of caffeine consumption (Muurlink, O'Callaghan, & Reid, 2018).

for school year 2021-2022. Based on the data gathered, 18 out of 24

participants, or 75.00% of the respondents are always having caffeinated

drinks, followed by 4 or 16.67% of the respondents who often drink caffeinated

beverages. There is also 2 participants or 08.33% who sometimes drink

caffeinated beverages, and lastly, there is no participants who rarely or never

drink any caffeinated drinks.

26

The data of the respondents show that they frequently drink caffeinated

beverages on a regular basis. Also, 100% of the participants answered that

they have drank caffeinated beverages and are those who drink from time to

time. Pacheco (2022), suggests that if you have trouble sleeping, limit your

caffeine intake six hours before bed. Caffeine can interfere with sleep onset

and reduce sleep time, efficiency, and satisfaction. Caffeine-induced sleep

problems may also be more common in the elderly.

of 39 or 71.79% of the respondents have no problem sleeping. Taking care of

our sleep quality and sleep cycle, in general, is crucial to our overall health

especially physically and mentally. Sleep affects our health, learning, and

memory which shows how poor sleep will be detrimental to our overall health,

and can affect our academic performance. Having good sleep, using different

Many factors may impact our sleep quality. Lack of sleep contributes to

negative and declining health, which shows how important having good sleep

is, and also, undergoing stress may alter our sleep cycle negatively. According

to the Sleep Foundation’s Dr. Anis Rehman and Danielle Pacheco, sleep

problems are conditions that affect an individual’s quality of sleep, the time or
28

duration spent asleep, and the individual’s capacity to function when they are

awake.

Table 7.1 demonstrates the percent difference of the sleep quality

without subliminal sound from week 1 to week 2 of high school students of

Benedictine Institute of Learning for School Year 2021-2022. Week 1 has an

average of 7.58 sleeping time and week 2 concludes with an average of 7.62.

By using the formula for percent difference, the researchers found out that

there is a 0.53% difference between the two weeks.

The data shows that without subliminal sounds, the sleep quality of the

high school students increased by 0.53% on a positive remark. This was

computed on a weekly basis to provide enough interval between the periods of

data collection. Drerup (2021), a psychiatrist and sleep disorder specialist,

argues that the more sleep a child need, the less sleep an adult requires. Sleep

is also said to be good for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
29

Your body may rest and rejuvenate when you sleep, and these restorative

qualities can be seen down to the molecular level. Boosting the immune

system, boosting emotional processing, reducing stress, retaining information,

improving cellular growth, tissue and muscle regeneration, and improving

exercise capacity are just a few of the many benefits of sleep.

In this table, the percent difference of the sleep quality without subliminal

sound and with subliminal sound from week 2 to week 3 of high school

students of Benedictine Institute of Learning for school year 2021-2022. The

data shows the two weeks whereas respondents were to listen to subliminal

sounds. The average sleep quality for the first week of listening to subliminal

totals 7.62 sleeping time. In the next week of listening to subliminal sounds,

week 3, it shows that the average sleeping time of the respondent is 6.99,

following a percent difference of negative 8.62.

30

The participants' sleep quality decreased by 8.62 percent, implying that

the subliminal sound they listened to during week 3 had a negative effect. This

implies that sleeping without subliminal sound is preferable to sleeping with it.

On the contrary, Loyd (2021) stated that silent subliminal messages are

messages captured outside of one's conscious awareness and without the

addition of dubbed music or nature sounds. Subliminal messages bypass the

conscious mind, allowing you to sleep for longer periods.

The table above shows the percent difference of the sleep quality with

the subliminal sound from week 3 to week 4 of high school students of

Benedictine Institute of Learning for School Year 2021-2022. The average time

of sleep for week 3 is 6.99 hours and for week 4 is 7.50 hours. The controlled

variable in this table is the data from week 4 and in order to show the

comparison between the two weeks, a percent difference is used. By

computing the average of the controlled and standard variable, 7.25 hours, the
31

percent difference can now be applied. 7.50 hours (controlled) minus 6.99

hours (standard) divided by the total average of 7.25 hours results in a 7.03

percent difference.

This set of data showed that there is a 7.03 percent increase in the sleep

quality of the high school students of Benedictine Institute of Learning. The

subliminal sound was implemented in the sleeping cycle of both weeks 3 and 4.

This further shows that the longer they get accustomed to listening to the

sound, the more effects it yields on their sleep quality. According to Karam,

Haidar, Khawaja, and Al Laziki (2017), when people listen to a subliminal

sound, CD, or tape, the conscious mind falls asleep, leaving only the

subconscious mind awake to receive orders, inputs, and suggestions without

interruption from the conscious mind.

2022. The average time of sleep for week 4 is 7.50 hours while for week 1 is

7.58 hours. Week 4, as the controlled variable in this set of data, is being

compared to the standard variable which is week 1. As demonstrated, the

percent difference is used to show the comparison between the two periods by

subtracting the controlled to the standard variable and dividing them by the total

average. By following the formula, the results show a -1.06 percent difference

in the sleep quality of high school students.

In week 1, there is no subliminal sound implemented, however, the

subliminal sound was used in week 4. The percent difference shows a 1.06%

decrease in the sleep quality of the high school students due to the subliminal

sounds. This is the opposite of what Nual, Jorge II, & Villalobos (2022) stated

wherein getting enough sleep and using various tools, particularly subliminal

sounds, can improve our health and academic performance. Taking care of our

sleep quality and sleep cycle, in general, is critical to our overall health,

particularly our physical and mental well-being. Sleep influences our health,

learning, and memory, demonstrating how a lack of sleep is detrimental to our

overall health, which can affect our academic performance.

The table shows the frequency and percentage of time spent falling

asleep among Benedictine Institute of Learning high school students during the

school year 2021-2022. The frequency of 420 and percentage of 76.92 are

listed below the without subliminal sound header for up to half an hour

descriptor. Its frequency totals over 458 answers and a percentage of 83.89

with the same descriptor, under the header of with subliminal sound. Under the

without subliminal sound header, the descriptor, Up to one hour, has 69

answers and a percentage of 12.64 percent.

While the with subliminal sound header with the same descriptor has 61

responses and an 11.17 percentage. One to two hours has 34 counts under

without subliminal sound or 06.23%. 2.93% or 16 have answered one to two

hours for the header of with subliminal sound. For the descriptor of more than 2

hours, 23 responses or 04.21% have been tallied over the period of having no

subliminal sound implemented. While on the other hand with the same
34

descriptor, 11 responded or 02.01% answered the tally over the period of

subliminal sound implementation.

The time to fall asleep of Benedictine Institute of Learning high school

students was compared from weeks 1 and 2 to weeks 3 and 4. There were no

subliminal sounds used in weeks 1 and 2 because this is where the initial data

will come from. Subliminal sounds are used in their sleep during weeks 3 and

4. In general, faster falling asleep can result in better sleep quality, giving the

participant more time to rest. Only the descriptor of up to half an hour shows a

positive increase, while others, namely, up to one hour, one to two hours, and

more than two hours, show a relative percentage decrease.

Sleep problems, according to Dr. Anis Rehman and Danielle Pacheco of

the Sleep Foundation, are conditions that affect an individual's quality of sleep,

the time or duration spent asleep, and the individual's ability to function when

awake. The searches aim to improve sleep quality by using subliminal sounds.

Poor sleep quality is frequently associated with difficulty getting enough sleep,

sleeping at the wrong time of day, inability to sleep properly, and, most

commonly, a complete lack of sleep.

Year 2021-2022. Based on the data, high school students with MIDI in week 1

has an average of 7.36 hours whereas in week 2, an average 7.40 hours of

sleep was recorded. This resulted in a final average of 7.38 hours and a

positive 0.47% increase of sleep quality from week 1 to week 2. Participants

without MIDI has an average of 7.34 hours of sleep in week 1 and 7.45 for

week 2. The total average is 7.40 and the computed percent difference resulted

a 1.41% increase in sleep quality from week 1 to week 2.

The data shows that without subliminal sounds the sleep quality of the

high school students with MIDI by 0.47% and the high school students without

MIDI increased by 1.41%. Sleep is essential for your mental and physical

health. Different processes that occur during sleep contribute to healthy brain

activity and overall health. Sleep is also essential for proper growth and

development in children and teenagers. Sleep deprivation can disrupt these

bodily functions. The inability to get enough high-quality sleep is referred to as

"sleep deficiency." This could be due to sleep deprivation or simply not getting

enough sleep, or it could be due to something else, such as a sleep disorder or

36

a misaligned circadian rhythm. When you don't get enough quality sleep, your

body has less time to recover during the night. This can also reduce your

body's resistance to diseases and medical conditions (Pacheco, 2022).

Table 9.2 indicates the percent difference in the sleep quality without

subliminal sound and with subliminal sound of high school students with

medical illnesses/diseases/issues (MIDI) of Benedictine Institute of Learning for

school year 2021-2022. Participants with MIDI averaged 7.40 hours of sleep in

week 2 and 6.95 hours in week 3. This resulted to a 7.17 hour total average

and the sleep quality between weeks 2 and 3 decreased by -6.28%. For

participants that have no MIDI, a 7.45 hour average was recorded in week 2

and 7.29 hours for week 3. The total average of the two weeks is 7.37 hours

and the computed percent difference is -2.13%.

37

The data implies that with the influence of subliminal sound in week 3,

the sleep quality of the participants relatively decreased for both with and

without MIDI form weeks 2 to 3. Drerup (2021), a psychiatrist and sleep

disorder specialist, believes that the more sleep you need as a child, the less

sleep you need as an adult. Sleep is also said to be beneficial to your physical,

mental, and emotional health. While you sleep, your body may rest and

rejuvenate, and these restorative capabilities can even be seen at the

molecular level. Boosting the immune system, increasing emotional processing,

stress reduction, recalling information, improving cellular growth, mending

tissue, and muscle regeneration, and improving exercise capacity are just a few

of the many benefits of sleep.

(MIDI) of Benedictine Institute of Learning for school year 2021-2022.

Participants with MIDI has an average of 6.95 hours for week 3 and 6.70 for
38

week 4. The total average is 6.82 hours and the data resulted in a decreased of

3.56 percent in sleep quality between weeks 3 and 4. To participants without

MIDI, the week 3 averaged 7.29 hours and week 4 averaged 8.07 hours of

sleep. The total average is 7.68 and its percent difference is 10.12%.

The data implicates that the sleep quality of the participants gradually

increased from week 3 to week 4 with the influence of subliminal sound. Also,

the increase of sleep quality for participants without MIDI is higher than those

without. As stated in the study of Karam, Haidar, Khawaja, and Al Laziki (2017),

When people listen to a subliminal sound, CD, or tape, the conscious mind will

be asleep and only the subconscious mind will be awake; as a result, it will

receive orders, inputs, and suggestions without being interrupted by the

conscious mind.

Table 9.4 showcases the percent difference in the sleep quality without

subliminal sound and with subliminal sound of high school students with

medical illnesses/diseases/issues (MIDI) of Benedictine Institute of Learning for

school year 2021-2022. In week 4, participants with MIDI averaged 6.70 hours

of sleep and 7.36 hours for week 1. The total average is 7.03 hours and the

percent difference is -9.37%. Whereas participants without MIDI averaged 8.07

hours of sleep in week 4 and 7.34 hours of sleep in week 1. Its total average is

7.70 and the percent difference between week 4 and 1 is a 9.40 percent

increase in sleep quality.

The data shows that for participants with MIDI, their sleep quality totally

decreased with the influence of subliminal sound by 9.37%. However, the sleep

quality of participants without MIDI increased by 9.40 percent with the influence

of subliminal sound. Also, for the week 4, it reached the minimum required

hours of sleep for teenagers which is 8 to 10 hours of sleep. According to

Loyd's (2021) research, subliminal audio is popular because it does not

interfere with your productive waking hours. With little effort, 6-8 hours of sleep

can be converted into a personal growth period.

Benedictine Institute of Learning for school year 2021-2022. Participants with

caffeine intake in week 1 has a 7.77 average of sleeping hours and 7.88 hours

for week 2. The total average for 7.82 hours of sleep and a 1.46% increase in

sleep quality. Participants without caffeine intake has week 1 has an average of

7.34 hours and 7.59 hours for week 2. In total, there is an average of 7.47

hours and a 3.70% increase in the sleep quality.

There is no subliminal sound implemented in week 1 and 2 but the data

shows an increase of sleep quality for both with and without caffeine intake.

This correlates to the study of Cleveland Clinic (2020), whereas caffeine

consumption causes the loss of three to five hours of sleep, but in comparison

with the data shown, there is better sleep quality than those with caffeine

intake, just not as significant as made in the study of Cleveland Clinic.

difference of -12.24%. For participants without caffeine intake, week 2

averaged 7.59 hours and 7.16 hours of sleep for week 3. The total average is

7.38 hours and the percent difference is -5.68%.

The sleep quality of the participants both with and without caffeine intake

decreased with the implementation of subliminal sound on week 3. This implies

that subliminal sound had a negative effect on the sleep quality of the

participants in this set of weeks. A study by Muurlink et al. (2018), states that

caffeine intake can reduce sleep by at least one hour. Respondents that

participated in the said study reported sleeping problems when consumed

caffeine in the past three hours before sleeping.

without caffein intake in week 3, they averaged 7.16 hours of sleep and 7.50 for

week 4. The total average is 7.33 and the percent difference is 4.59%.

The sleep quality of participants with caffeine intake show more increase than

participants without caffeine intake. This implies that the subliminal sound

implemented in week 3 and 4 gradually boosts their sleep quality. As cited in

The Filipino Times (2019), improving one’s sleep quality is extremely important

to the overall well-being of our health. This proves that the research project

would be beneficial since the goal of this study is to improve sleep quality.

Using subliminal sounds, we aim to have a positive impact on the sleep

deprivation of the respondents.

has an average of 7.50 for week 4 and 7.34 for week 1. The total average is

7.42 and the percent difference is 2.13%.

The data show that for participants with caffeine intake, their sleep

quality decreased by 0.76% under the influence of subliminal sound whereas,

the sleep quality of students without caffeine intake increased 2.13% under the

influence of subliminal sound. Which means that sleep quality is better for

those without caffeine intake. Caffeine may result in sleep deprivation, affecting
44

day-to-day activities, such as learning. Caffeine shortens the time spent in

sleep and deep sleep (Pacheco, 2022).

who have sleeping problems, their week 1 averaged 8.14 hours and their week

2 averaged 8.22 hours. The total average of hours is 8.18 and the percent

difference is 0.96%. For participants without subliminal sound, a 6.96 hour

average has been recorded for week 1 and 7.20 hours for week 2. The total

average is 7.08 hours and the percent difference is 3.28%.

The sleep quality of the participants with sleep quality were high to begin

with. It already reached the minimum requirement of hours of sleep for their

age category which is 8 to 10 hours of sleep for ages 13 to 18. In addition, the
45

sleep quality also increased without the influence of subliminal sound by

0.96%. On the other hand, those without sleeping problems have less average

hours of sleep but increased by 3.28% with the influence of subliminal sound.

Participants with sleeping problems on week 2 averaged 8.22 hours and 7.54

hours for week 3. The total average is 7.88 and the percent difference is a

negative 8.67%. For students without sleeping problems, researchers recorded

an average of 7.20 hours of sleep for week 2 and 6.58 for week 3. The total

average in this set of weeks is 6.89 hours and the percent difference is -8.98%.

The shows a decrease on sleep quality for both students with and

without sleeping problems. With subliminal sound being implemented on the 3 rd

week, this implies that subliminal sounds decreased the sleep quality. Sleep-

related processes all contribute to healthy brain activity and overall health.

Sleep is also necessary for children and teenagers' proper growth and

development. These bodily functions can be disrupted by a lack of sleep. When

you don't get enough quality sleep, your body doesn't have as much time to

recover during the night. This can also lower your resistance to diseases and

medical conditions (Pacheco, 2022).

With subliminal sound both being implemented on weeks 3 and 4, its

shows that both participants with and without sleeping problems had an

increase on their sleep quality. Students without sleeping problems sleep

quality increased more than those with sleeping problems. Many factors may

impact our sleep quality. Lack of sleep contributes to negative and declining

health, which shows how important having good sleep is, and also, undergoing

stress may alter our sleep cycle negatively. According to the Sleep

Foundation’s Dr. Anis Rehman and Danielle Pacheco, sleep problems are

conditions that affect an individual’s quality of sleep, the time or duration spent

This show that for students with sleeping problems, subliminal sound

decreased the sleep quality by 5.42% whereas for students without sleeping

problems, their sleeping quality was increased by 2.00% with subliminal

sounds. Taking care of our sleep quality and sleep cycle, in general, is crucial

to our overall health especially physically and mentally. Sleep affects our

health, learning, and memory which shows how poor sleep will be detrimental

to our overall health and can affect our academic performance. Having good

sleep, using different tools but especially subliminal sounds may improve sleep
49

quality which in turn will improve our health, and also our academics (Jorge II,

quality of the respondents. While in weeks 3 and 4 there is a 7.03% rise in the

sleep quality of the selected high school students. Lastly, there is a decrease of

1.06% in the sleep quality of all the participants.

This shows that there is an increase and decrease in the sleep quality of

the participants during the whole implementation period. The decrease of the

sleep quality in week 2 and 3 paved way for the rise of percent difference on

the sleep quality for week 3 and 4. And the very takeaway in this line graph is

that subliminal sound decreased the sleep quality of the high school students

on week 4 and 1 by 1.06%. This implies that subliminal sounds pose a negative

effect on the sleep quality of the high school students of Benedictine Institute of

Learning for school year 2021-2022.

The percent difference for the 1st and 2nd weeks shows that there is

an increase in the sleep quality of both groups without the influence of

subliminal sound. There is a 1.41% increase in the sleep quality of those who

don’t have any MIDI, while there is also an increase of 0.47% in the sleep

quality of those who have it. However, for weeks 2 and 3, both groups’ sleep
52

quality decreased when compared to week 3 wherein subliminal sound is

implemented. There is a 2.13% decrease in sleep quality for those without MIDI

and a 6.28% decrease for those with MIDI.

During the 3rd and 4th weeks, the subliminal sound is already

implemented in the sleep quality of the participants and it has shown an

increase in the percent difference. There is a 10.12% increase in the percent

difference for those who don’t have any MIDI and a 3.56% increase for those

who have. Finally, for weeks 4 and 1, a comparison between week 1 when no

subliminal sound was used in their sleep against week 4 where the subliminal

sound was used. Participants without MIDI had their sleep quality decreased by

9.4%, and the sleep quality of the participants with MIDI dropped to -9.37%.

A zigzag pattern is formed which indicates that there has been both

an increase and decrease in the participants’ sleep quality every week. The

main focus here is the participants’ sleep quality during weeks 2 and 3, and

weeks 4 and 1. For weeks 2 and 3, it showed that listening to subliminal

sounds increased the sleep quality for both participants with and without MIDI.

However, for weeks 4 and 1, it indicates that only those without MIDI had an

those who have caffeine intake and vice versa. It shows a 1.46% increase for

those who have caffeine intake and a 3.40% increase for those who do not

have caffeine intake.

54

For the second and third week, it showed a decrease in sleep quality

wherein a 12.24 decrease in sleep quality has been recorded for those who

have caffeine intake and for the other group, a -5.86 has been recorded. For

the third and fourth week, there is a 4.59% increase for participants without

caffeine intake and 10.02% for participants with caffeine intake. Lastly, for the

weeks 4 and 1, a 2.13% increase has been recorded for the participants

without caffeine intake and a 0.76% decrease has been recorded for the

participants with caffeine intake.

The data implies that when the subliminal sound was implemented on

the participants sleep on week 2 and week 3, it decreased their sleep quality.

The same also applies on the week 4 and 1. However, during the weeks

wherein subliminal sounds were fully implemented, namely weeks 3 and 4, it

showed a gradual increase. Caffeine has been shown to improve performance,

but it can also have negative side effects like performance deficits and social

problems. Scholars debate whether the alleged psychoactive benefits of

caffeine are a net benefit of caffeine consumption. In an integrative review, we

investigated the relationship between caffeine consumption and the quality and

quantity of nighttime sleep. Caffeine has a number of beneficial effects on both

physical and cognitive functioning. Despite the difficulty of ensuring adequate

sleep, caffeine has some advantages that make it likely to be used as a

performance-enhancing substance (Muurlink, O., O'Callaghan, F., Reid, N.,

Specifically, a 0.96% increase in sleep quality for those with sleeping problems

and a 3.28% increase for those who don’t have sleeping problems.
56

However, for weeks 2 and 3, both groups’ sleep quality decreased

when compared to week 3 wherein subliminal sound is implemented. There is

an 8.67% decrease in sleep quality for those with sleeping problems and an

8.98% decrease for those who don’t have any sleeping problems.

Weeks three and 4 are a different story. Both weeks have subliminal

sound implemented to the sleep quality of the participants and its shows an

increase in percent difference. There is a 7.93% increase in the percent

for those who have sleeping problems.

Lastly, for weeks 4 and 1, a comparison between week 1 wherein no

subliminal sound has been implemented in their sleep whereas week 4 has

57

The Filipino Times (2019), a Sleep Cycle survey ranks the Philippines fourth in

the world in terms of sleep deprivation. Improving one's sleep quality is critical

to our health's overall well-being. This demonstrates that the research project

would be beneficial, as the study's goal is to improve sleep quality. We hope to

have a positive impact on the respondents' sleep deprivation by using

subliminal sounds.

Discussion

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the subliminal sound

on the sleep quality of the high school students of Benedictine Institute of

Learning for the school year 2021-2022. The researchers found out that there

is an increase and decrease in the sleep quality of high school students. The

said increase was mainly observed on weeks 2 to 3 in all the line graphs. There

was an increase every on the 2nd and 3rd weeks due to the decrease of the

sleep quality in the 1st and 2nd week therefore the change in sleep quality will

be observed. On the final comparison of weeks using percent difference, the

1st and 4th week, it has been observed that there is mainly an increase in the

sleep quality of the high school students.

Another data set was the time of falling asleep wherein researchers

observed an improvement between the period without subliminal sound and the

subliminal sound. The very main factor that was looked into is that during the

initial data gathering, wherein no subliminal sound is implemented, the number

58

420 responses of being able to sleep up to half an hour was recorded, 76.92%

out of the 546 responses. The improvement was noticed in the 3rd and 4th

weeks where the subliminal sound was implemented, the number of responses

rose to 458, an 8.67% increase from the same total. Sleep problems, according

to Dr. Anis Rehman and Danielle Pacheco of the Sleep Foundation, are

conditions that affect an individual's quality of sleep, the time or duration spent

asleep, and the individual's ability to function when awake. The searches aim to

improve sleep quality by using subliminal sounds. Poor sleep quality is

frequently associated with difficulty getting enough sleep, sleeping at the wrong

time of day, inability to sleep properly, and, most commonly, a complete lack of

sleep.

For the data about participants with medical illnesses/disease/issues,

caffeine intake, and sleeping problems, the line graph representation shows a

similarity to each other wherein the sleep quality of those with medical

illnesses/diseases/issues, caffeine intake, and sleeping problems has a

relatively low sleep quality regardless of with or without subliminal sound than

those without medical illnesses/diseases/issues, caffeine intake, and sleeping

problem. However, the data also showed similar patterns to the general

observation of the researchers wherein a zigzag line was formed throughout

the whole implementation period.

The following data is supported by this literature wherein caffeine has

been shown to improve performance, but it can also have negative side effects
59

like performance deficits and social problems. Scholars debate whether the

alleged psychoactive benefits of caffeine are a net benefit of caffeine

consumption. In an integrative review, we investigated the relationship between

caffeine consumption and the quality and quantity of nighttime sleep. Caffeine

has several beneficial effects on both physical and cognitive functioning.

Despite the difficulty of ensuring adequate sleep, caffeine has some

advantages that make it likely to be used as a performance-enhancing

substance (Muurlink, O., O'Callaghan, F., Reid, N., 2018).

Another supporting literature wherein its goal is to improve sleep quality

is by the Filipino Times (2019), a sleep cycle survey ranks the Philippines

fourth in the world in terms of sleep deprivation. Improving one's sleep quality is

critical to our health's overall well-being. This demonstrates that the research

project would be beneficial, as the study's goal is to improve sleep quality. We

hope to have a positive impact on the respondents' sleep deprivation by using

subliminal sounds.

Reflection

Sleeping is one of the most important factors to our health, hence why

the research pursued this topic by creating a study entitled “Effectiveness of

subliminal sound on the sleep quality of the selected high school students of

Benedictine Institute of Learning for the school year 2021-2022”. However,

sleeping is not the same for everyone, there might be caffeine intake, and

those with insomnia or medical issues that hinder their sleeping quality and
60

time. The researchers carefully monitored the sleeping habits of the

respondents.

With the different factors that may affect sleep quality, the researchers

created a topic that can be possible for better sleep quality. The researchers

reached the respondents through convenience sampling to better pick the best

quality respondents.

In response to the study and sleep quality of the respondents, the

researchers provided a set of subliminal sounds for the respondents to listen to

whilst sleeping at night. The researchers expected at first that there would be a

positive effect in listening to subliminal. The researchers took the data of thirty-

nine (39) respondents monitoring their sleep quality. For the first two weeks, we

had the respondents sleep normally as they do. For the third and fourth weeks,

we had them listen to subliminal sounds, expecting that they would be of

assistance to their sleep quality.

The researchers formed a data of a thousand rows for the sleep quality of

every respondent, then we separated those with caffeine intake, sleeping

troubles, and those with medical illnesses that may affect their sleeping time.

As shown in the data of the complete respondents, there is a minimal positive

effect to using subliminal sounds to help them sleep. The separate caffeine

intake part of the study resulted in an overall positive effect on the sleep quality

of the students. Though one week monitored by the researchers resulted in

higher sleep quality with caffeine intake. Next, the researchers also monitored
61

the sleep quality of medically ill students versus an equal amount of those

without. The researchers found that those with medical illnesses have

drastically lower sleep quality than those without. Finally, is the sleep quality of

those with trouble sleeping. Alike with caffeine intake and those who are

mentally ill, have trouble sleeping also have a lower sleep quality than those

without

Overall, the different factors were expected to come out true. Caffeine

intake, medical problems, and trouble sleeping all effect harmfully the sleep

quality of the respondents.

The researchers wanted to do a triangulation wherein both quantitative

and qualitative data are involved so more data to analyze and present. But with

the amount of time we have and the experience we went on doing qualitative

research, we determined that the researchers were unable to proceed with it.

When I was in elementary, my hobby was playing outdoor games. I also

participated in track and field. In High School, I often played because I was

already doing a lot so what I used to do was playing online games sometimes,

when I don’t have a lot of academic things to do. Then after that when I

became more adult I used to play guitar even doing paintings was one of my

hobbies till now.
