Writing an introduction turned out to be the most chal-
lenging part of our work on this book. The memories from
where it all started hit hard, and we can't just casually put
them into words.
We're a group of friends who enjoyed getting together
on weekends and holidays. When Kateryna (the skilled
craftswoman in our team) wanted to create a play food
cupcake for her daughter’s first birthday, she couldn't
find the perfect crochet pattern, so she decided to whip
up her own. Despite being new to crocheting amigurumi,
her creation wowed us all. Eager to share it with the
world, our kitchen table transformed into a makeshift
photo studio where we captured pictures of her first
creation. We were sure it would charm the world! Each
member of our group has many talents that complement
each other, so when we decided to start a crochet-based
business, we knew we would benefit from joining our
skills. Over the next year, we created dozens of designs,
prepared a home photo studio, and truly enjoyed our-
selves creating the cutest amigurumi.

Today, our home, that kitchen table, and the place where it
all started no longer exists. We had to leave the ruined city
of Mariupol in Ukraine. Our city was continuously bombed,
but until moments before the electricity went out, I posted
updates and dealt with customers’ issues. When we fled
our homes, we could hardly take anything with us. Not a
single toy survived. Kateryna took two crochet hooks and
a laptop, Roman took his camera, I took my phone, which
connected us with the world. The thought that our hobby
would help us survive, gave us courage.
We soon found ourselves as refugees in different countries,
separated by long distances, but we never abandoned
"Mufficorn". If it weren’t for crocheting, I honestly think we
might have gone mad from the challenges we were facing.
Crocheting grounded us, and it turned out to be more than
a craft, it brought us a community of like-minded people
who helped us and made us feel connected at a time when
everything seemed lost. Many offered us aid and support,
for which we are endlessly grateful.
Our lives have changed dramatically, but we remain
resilient. We crochet in our spare moments, on the way to
work, waiting for our children after school, before bedtime,
and instead of sleeping. We love the crochet community
and with this book, we want to show that we’ll overcome
all challenges and distances, and continue to work together

Basic materials
Before we get started, you'll need to gather a few essential supplies. In this section, you'll learn about
the basic tools needed to complete the toys in this book.

COLORFUL YARN STITCH MARKER

For every pattern in this book we've listed the materials used
to create that design, including the yarn. We've used Scheepjes
Catona (50 g / 125 m) and Scheepjes Stone/River Washed
(50 g / 130 m), both fingering weight yarns. Scheepjes Catona
is a 100% mercerised cotton with a soft shine and bright colors.
It works up really easily and is smooth to the touch. Scheepjes
Stone Washed has a soft and woolly feel, and Scheepjes River
Washed is an expressive yarn with 2 different colors spun
together. Don’t feel tied to the choices of yarn thickness though:
any weight of cotton, acrylic or wool can be used as a substitute,
provided you use the right crochet hook accordingly. Check the
chart on the next page for a quick comparison of yarn weights
and corresponding recommended hook sizes.
The patterns don’t give the yarn quantity. The amounts are
rather small and will vary according to how loosely or tightly you
crochet. You could use some of the remnants from other projects
or start with a new ball of yarn. When more than one 50g ball is
needed, we mention this in the materials list.
CROCHET HOOKS
Hooks as well come in different sorts and sizes. Bigger hooks
make bigger stitches than smaller ones. It's important to match
the right hook size with the right weight of yarn.
For amigurumi, you generally want to use a hook two or three
sizes smaller than what is recommended on your yarn label. The
crochet fabric should be quite tight, without any gaps through
which the stuffing can escape. Using a smaller hook makes it
easier to achieve this. Hooks are usually made from aluminum
or steel. Metal hooks tend to slip between the stitches more
easily. Preferably choose a crochet hook with a rubber ergo-
nomic handle.
A stitch marker is a small metal or plastic clip. It’s a simple tool to
mark your starting point and give you the assurance that you’ve
made the right number of stitches in each round. Mark the last
stitch of the round with your stitch marker. You move your stitch
marker up one round at the end of each round. When you reach
your stitch marker after crocheting a new round, you take it out,
crochet in this stitch, then put it in the last stitch of the round you
crocheted.
STUFFING
For the filling, polyester fiberfill is advised. It's washable and
non-allergenic. The individual parts of a toy are stuffed while the
piece is being crocheted. The stuffing of wider pieces such as
the head or body begins when they are roughly half finished. For
stuffing very thin pieces in which you cannot fit a finger, the back
of a crochet hook or a chopstick can be used. Generally, when
stuffing a toy, it's important to use more stuffing than you might
initially think. If the toy isn't stuffed tightly, it will lose its shape
over time. On the other hand, if it's overstuffed, the stuffing may
cause the fabric to stretch and become visible. You'll need to find
the right balance.
TAPESTRY NEEDLE
For sewing, a tapestry needle with a rounded tip is used. This
rounded tip makes it easier to insert your needle in a specific
space without splitting your yarn.
SEWING PINS
It can be handy to have some sewing pins lying around, to help
position body parts before sewing them on permanently.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

BEFORE YOU START
PATTERN STRUCTURE
All patterns in this book are worked in continuous spirals, not in
joined rounds. Crocheting in spirals can be confusing, since there’s
no clear indication of where a new round begins and the previous
one ends. To keep track of the rounds, you can mark the end of
a round with a stitch marker or safety pin. After crocheting the
next round, you should end up right above your stitch marker.
Move your stitch marker at the end of each round to keep track of
where you are.

turn your crochetwork to start the next. Don't count this turning
chain as a stitch and skip it when working the next row (unless
otherwise mentioned).
At the end of each line you will find the number of stitches you
should have in square brackets, for example [9]. When in doubt,
take a moment to check your stitch count.

At the beginning of each line you will find ‘Rnd + a number’ to in- When parts of the instructions repeat throughout the round, we
dicate which round you are in. If a round is repeated, you'll read place them between rounded brackets, followed by the number of
‘Rnd 9 – 12’, for example. You then repeat this round four times, times this part should be worked. We do this to shorten the pattern and

HOLD THE HOOK AND YARN (HAND POSITION)
Usually, we handle the hook with the same hand we use to write, but
it’s not a rule. If you take it with your right hand, you will crochet from
right to left. If you take it with your left hand, you will crochet from
left to right. There are different ways of holding a crochet hook. You will
need to experiment and find the way that feels the most comfortable
for you.
Pencil grip
Hold the hook as you would a pencil, grasping it between your thumb
and index finger, in the middle of the flat thumb rest. Your middle
finger is positioned on the other side to balance the hook.
Knife grip
Hold the hook in the same manner as you would hold a knife, grasping
it between your thumb on one side and index and middle finger on the
other side, resting the end of the hook against your palm.
Hold the yarn
The free hand holds your crochet work and at the same
time controls the tension of the yarn. You can weave the
yarn through your fingers or just place the thread between
your palm and two or three fingers. Keep in mind that you
have to maintain a steady tension while crocheting, so
that your stitches come out even.
Tension
It can be challenging to master the tension of your yarn
when you are new to crochet. You are not alone – tension
is the one thing most beginning crocheters have a hard
time with.
To maintain tension in the working yarn, you may find it
helpful to unravel a long end of your yarn ball (your ten-
sion is tighter when the weight of the ball pulls your yarn
tight), and wrap the yarn around the fingers of the hand
opposite the one holding the hook.

INSERT THE HOOK (PLACEMENT OF STITCHES)
With the exception of chains, all crochet stitches
require the hook to be inserted in existing stitches.
Insert the hook underneath both top loops of the
stitch in the row or round below. When inserting
the hook, you take it from front to back through a
stitch. The point of the hook must always look down
or sideways, so the hook doesn’t snag the yarn or
the fabric.

YARN OVER HOOK
The yarn over hook technique is used in every type of crochet
stitch. Wrap the yarn over the hook from back to front. The
yarn is now wrapped around the tip of the crochet hook, so
that the hook can grab and pull the yarn.

If you’re working in rows, your first row will be a series of chain stitches.
Step 1: Use the hook to draw the yarn through the loop. Scan or visit

TIP
COUNTING CHAIN STITCHES
Each V-shaped chain counts as one stitch. Never count your
first slip knot and the loop on the hook. Make sure that the chain is
untwisted and the front is directed towards you for easier counting.
When asked to crochet FLO or BLO you make the same stitch, but leave one
loop untouched.

Counting stitches will help you check that you are following the pattern correctly. The easiest way to count stitches is to
look at the plaited tops (V's at the top of your crochetwork). If you discover you missed one stitch or made one too many, you
can always try to correct it by making an (extra) decrease or increase in the following round (see below and on the next page).

INVISIBLE DECREASE (abbreviation: dec)

STARTING A CIRCULAR PIECE WITH 2 CH STITCHES

If you don't want to use the magic ring technique,

Rnd 7 – 13: sc in all 8 st [8]
The arm doesn’t need to be stuffed. Flatten the opening of
the arm and sc in next 4 st through both layers to close the
opening. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the
arms symmetrically on the sides of the body, using the front
loops left on round 2 of the body (picture 13). Make sure
that the color change line is on the inside of the arms.
LEAF (make 2, in green yarn)
Ch 12 (picture 14). Stitches are worked around both sides
of the foundation chain.
Rnd 1: start in second ch from the hook, hdc in next 10 ch,
2 hdc (pictures 15-16) + ch-2-picot (pictures 17-18) +
2 hdc in next ch (picture 19). Continue on the other side of
the foundation chain, hdc in next 10 ch [24 + picot]
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing (picture 20).
TULIP (make 2, start in green yarn)
Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: inc in all 6 st [12]
Change to pink yarn.
Rnd 3: (sc in next st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times [18]
Rnd 4: (sc in next 2 st, inc in next st) repeat 6 times [24]
Rnd 5 – 12: sc in all 24 st [24]
Rnd 13: (skip 1 st, 6 dc in next st, skip 1 st, slst in next st)
repeat 6 times [42]
Fasten off and weave in the yarn end. The tulip doesn’t
need to be stuffed. Sew 1 tulip to the tip of the hat. Sew
1 leaf to the side of the green part of the hat (picture 21).
STEM (in green yarn)
Rnd 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2 – 35: sc in all 6 st [6]
Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail. Fold 2 pipe cleaners in half and
insert them into the stem. Using your yarn needle, weave
the yarn tail through the front loop of each remaining stitch
and pull it tight to close. Weave in the yarn end. Bend the tip
of the stem into a curled shape. Sew 1 tulip to the tip of the
stem. Sew 1 leaf to the side of the stem (picture 22).
BUTTERFLY
HEAD AND BODY (make 2, in black yarn)
Ch 8. Crochet in rows.
Row 1: start in second ch from the hook, slst in next 6 ch,
4 sc in next ch [10]
Fasten off and weave in the yarn end. Tie 2 short yarn ends to
the head to make the antennae, with 1 stitch between them.
Make a knot at the end of each antenna and trim the yarn
ends. Add wings on either the right or left side.
WINGS ON RIGHT SIDE (in light yellow yarn)
Pull up a loop of light yellow yarn in the third loop below the
head, on the right-hand side.
Slst in this loop, (ch 3 (picture 23) + 2 dc + ch 3 (picture 24)
+ slst in same loop (picture 25)) repeat 2 times (pictures
26-28) [7]
Fasten off and weave in the yarn end. Embroider 2 white
dots on the wings (over 1 stitch each).
WINGS ON LEFT SIDE (in light yellow yarn)
Pull up a loop of light yellow yarn in the third loop below the
head, on the left-hand side.
Slst in this loop, (ch 3 + 2 dc + ch 3 + slst in same loop)
repeat 2 times [7]
Fasten off and weave in the yarn end. Embroider 2 white
dots on the wings (over 1 stitch each). Sew a butterfly to
each tulip.

The small gnome can be used as a keychain.

Make 35 ch with the yarn color of your choice and

fasten off. Fold the chain in half and sew the ends to
the tip of the gnome's hat.

About the authors - We’re Kateryna and Olga, born and raised
in Mariupol, Ukraine. We first crossed paths in 2006 at the
Azovstal steel plant, where we both worked. We quickly
became close friends and since 2020, we’ve shared our love
for crochet in our brand 'Mufficorn'. Our first design was the
Cupcake, accompanied by amazing pictures that we took in
Olga’s kitchen.
While building our brand, we’ve given special care to our IG
account @muffi corn and we’re genuinely proud of it, both as
a space to inspire fellow crocheters to spread the love of
Kateryna Yefimova crochet, as well as a showcase for our makes, beautifully
photographed by Roman Chemerys. Having such a big group
of enthusiastic crochet fans to share our journey with makes
us unbelievably happy. Some of our fans have become close
friends and have supported us through incredibly challenging
times. We’re forever grateful to you! Despite having been
apart since 2022, our friendship and our determination to work
and create together remains steadfast. The physical distance
between us hasn't hindered our collaboration, but has made
our bond even stronger. The story of Mufficorn is not just about
cute creations, but also about pushing through tough times,
about never giving up, no matter what obstacles you face along
